LETTERS 25
The pain and anguish of the
survivors and victims of the
March 15 massacres must be
unbearable at times, as must the
anger and rage.
As Dr Alayan says, we strive to
be a “land of love and compassion.”
Taking the lives of other human
beings for revenge or to
serve as a warning to others, to
make a point, are not acts of love
and compassion, in my view.
If it is acceptable, as a
matter of principle, to take
lives under some circumstances
to make a point, it is then only
a matter of opinion and
opportunity as to which
circumstances are acceptable. The
means create the end. Spilling
blood does not lead to peaceful
co-existence.
– Marney Ainsworth
Mohammad Alayan has a
nerve calling for the reintroduction
of the death penalty in NZ. He
should look to the reasons why
we abolished it. We have the
world’s best judicial system. It may
be the norm in most Middle Eastern
countries to execute but not in
this civilised country.
– D. Robinson
Sadly Mr Alayan has misjudged
this country. If he demands the
death sentence then go back to
his own country of birth where
that penalty may be the case.
– Malcolm Waitt
In this case it is very tempting
to make an exception. But overall
I say no to capital punishment.
– Sharon Clements
Yes I totally believe that the
death penalty should be available
to be used in criminal law where
human life has been taken as well
as other crimes that have caused
the victim to suffer from an attack
to a degree that death of the
attacker is the best outcome.
– Russell Ramsden
I am very much against bringing
back the death penalty in
New Zealand.
There have been too many
miscarriages of justice over the
years plus the fact you are
expecting some person to
carry out your wishes which
is not the right thing to do.
– B. Turner
I think capital punishment
should be reintroduced for
criminals who have multiple
offences for the same violent
crimes and who we know will
never change and will always be
dangerous to society if they get
out of prison.
– Garry Edwards
Contractors
As a ratepayer I am tired
and confused. Contractors are
requesting payments from the
council to make up losses they
incurred due to the lockdown
and they are being paid out.
The lockdown was put in place
by the Government and not
the council and it seems to me
that the contractors making the
claims don’t feel part of the five
million.
I see two options: The council
withhold further payment and
let the contractors take them to
court, or payments continue and
contractors receiving payments
receive no new contracts for the
next five years.
Isn’t it about time the council
stood up for the ratepayers
instead of making them
everybody’s lapdog.
There was a full page
advertisement placed by the
Christchurch City Council entity
ChristchurchNZ in the Sunday
Star Times (July 12).
The bold heading
was: “OTAUTAHI
CHRISTCHURCH,” and this
name was repeated six times in
the body copy.
Has this been debated
and agreed to by our elected
councillors or are our bureaucrats
renaming Christchurch for its
residents?
The ratepayers of Christchurch
do not need this time consuming,
expensive and confusing
nonsense. Has the council a
mandate to rename the city?
– N.G. Smith
Mayor Lianne Dalziel
responds: Ōtautahi
Christchurch has been used on
many occasions to reflect the
pre-European history of the city
at the same time as referring to
the city.
There has been no name
change for the city as claimed by
your correspondent.
The Ō is the reference to the
place and Tautahi refers to a
prominent Ngāi Tahu chief
who had settlements within the
Christchurch CBD prior to the
arrival of European settlers.
Ōtautahi literally means the place
of Tautahi.
As a council we added
Ōtautahi to our vision statement
as part of the city’s strategic
framework last year. It reads:
“Ōtautahi-Christchurch is a city
of opportunity for all – open to
new ideas, new people and new
ways of doing things – a city
where anything is possible.”
