I HEAR YOUAn elephant is not overwhelmed by its trunk.(Sukuma, Tanzania)Mhuli idabhunagwa nkondo gwayo.(Sukuma, Tanzania)Publisher’s noteTembo hazidiwi na mkonga wake. (Swahili)L’éléphant ne s’accable pas par sa trompe.(French)An elephant is not overwhelmed by its trunk.(English)MEANING: With determination, no task isdifficult or impossible for one to fulfil.TELL ME SOMETHINGGender-based violenceGender-based violence, which is violence directed against a person as aresult of their gender is a serious, yet often neglected human right violation. We cannot talk about gender-based violence without first going back togender inequality, because gender violence is deeply rooted in genderinequality, which offers the “reality” behind the violence. This kind of violence can be perpetuated physically, psychologically, sexually or economically on the victims through threats, coercion, libertydeprivation whether in public or within the four corners of our privatehomes.Although from the definition, both men and women can be victims ofgender-based violence, in reality, women are mostly at the receiving endof the violence. It is, therefore, not strange to know that the term “violenceagainst women” is often used to describe gender-based violence. In Africa, where culture and tradition often segregate and relegate women to a secondclasscitizen position, African women have become increasingly victims ofgender-based violence, which is systematically legitimized in the continent. That reality gives men the “right” to exercise their power, dominance andcontrol over women. This leads to an imbalanced relationship between maleand female.SUBSCRIPTIONSubscription to the printed version is possible viathe website (www.katakata.org) or E-mail(info@katakata.org)ALTERNATIVELY, you may fill in the form belowand send to us:Name: ....................................................................................Address: ................................................................................Telephone No: ....................................................................Duration of Subscription: 1 year 2 yearsTill further noticeSubscription rates per year (4 editionsincluding postage):THE NETHERLANDS: €45, EUROPE: €55,USA/AMERICA: €52 AFRICA: €75, ASIA: €75Send your form to: info@katakata.orgOR by post :KATA KATA CARTOON MAGAZINEVenloweg 341324 DL Almere, The Netherlands+31 (0) 36 52 98 411 +31 (0) 61 98 69 357+31 (0) 61 38 46 788The developmental benchmark of any country is measured by the positionof women in that country. In most cases, gender-based violence leads tolow economic productivity. Tackling gender-based violence must be anuncompromising task of every progressive and responsible governmentbecause gender-based violence constitutes a human rights violation, as wellas a blatant form of gender-based discrimination.Since most of the gender-violence is rooted in our culture and tradition, efforts must be directed to preventing any form of domestic violence againstwomen. Traditions are man-made, as such, they can be modified to suit thepresent reality. Apart from discouraging domestic violence against women, governments much back the initiative up, by making laws to seriouslypunish gender-based violence offenders. Law enforcement agents must beempowered and encouraged to enforce anti-gender-based violence laws.It is by discouraging gender-based violence and seriously punishing theperpetrators of such an evil act, that the government can positively changethe social cognition and the mindset of the people as well as the attitude thatencourages the violence. The Kata Kata Village has decided to make gender-based violence one ofits 2020 priorities. Come and join the campaign. Let us head to the villagesquare and be part of the Kata Kata Village anti-gender-based violencecampaign. Come on, let’s go!Yours in Kata Kata,Ogo UbabukohEditor In-Chief/PublisherPAYMENT:Account No: 453100619IBAN: NL02ABNA0453100619BIC: ABNANL2APLACE: Almere, The Netherlands2020 Issue 24 SPECIAL EDITION Kata Kata cartoon magazine 5
