4 CONTENTS
Welcome to the July 2020 edition of The Eckington
& Killamarsh Doorsteppa.
I must start by saying I hope this finds you safe and
well in what has been a very strange and frightening
period in our history.
Everyone at Doorsteppa would like to send our
thanks to the key workers who continued to provide
us essential food and medical supplies during
the past few months. And of course to the first
responders and front line workers who dealt and
continue to deal bravely with the unknown.
It may take a while for the country to get back fully
on its feet and feel normal again. At The Doorsteppa
it may take us a few months before we see all the
clubs, meetings, events, church listings etc that are
usually packed into our pages. I have no doubts that
as a community we will get there.
This month we have several articles that we hope
can continue to provide useful guidance as well as
offering a welcome distraction. We will continue
providing the latest news and measures but as
things can change on a weekly, if not daily basis,
please check on www.gov.uk for all the up-to-date
advice.
As our April issues were released online only, please
get in touch if you have any queries regarding these
editions, or if you just want the answers to the
puzzle page!
If you visit or contact anyone you have seen in The
Doorsteppa, be it a charity or a local business, don’t
forget to mention where you saw their details.
For anyone who would like to advertise, or promote
a community/non-profit event in our August
editions, please phone, email or contact us on social
media. The details are listed below. Please note the
deadline for booking space and/or confirming your
advert is Monday 20th July 2020.
Have a great month. Stay safe.
7 COMMUNITY
• Sheffield Samaritans has launched ‘Talk To Us’ to raise
awareness of its round-the-clock emotional support services
and to encourage people to get in touch if they need support.
• Sheffield Samaritans has continued to provide emotional
support throughout the pandemic at a time when listening to
others has never been more important.
Since lockdown in March, Samaritans volunteers suggest that
one in three callers talk about coronavirus with many people
feeling more anxious and distressed than before the pandemic.
Volunteer surveys which gathered over 3,000 responses, also
found the most common concerns related to coronavirus are
around loneliness, isolation, mental health and illness, family,
finances, and unemployment.
Branch Director at Sheffield Samaritans, Sally, said: “Our
volunteers have been working day and night to be there for
anyone who is struggling in these uncertain and challenging
times. Lockdown restrictions have had a huge impact on
everyday life for many people, as we’ve been hearing over the
past few months, and our volunteers have been a much-needed
source of support for those whose networks haven’t been
available during the pandemic.
“Our outreach work and fundraising activity remains on hold
until further notice, but we hope that the public can continue to
support us in any way they can. We have recently reopened our
charity shop which is essential in raising the funds that enable us
to support people who are struggling to cope. By shopping there,
the people of Sheffield can help us to continue to be there for
anyone in need of support.”
Sheffield Samaritans is encouraging the local community to
show their support, by visiting our charity shop which has now
reopened in line with government directions. Located at 45
Chapel Walk in Sheffield City Centre the shop is currently open
from 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday. The shop team have been
working hard over the last few weeks to ensure that the shop
can reopen safely with the wellbeing of customers and
volunteers being prioritised.
Samaritans is also marking 24/7 across the UK and Ireland as one
of the most important days in the organisation’s charity’s
calendar which it uses to help spread the message that
volunteers are available to listen to anyone who is struggling
–day or night, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Anyone can contact Samaritans for free anytime from any phone
on 116 123, even a mobile without credit, or you can
email jo@samaritans.org.
11 TAROTSCOPES
Karen Glazier
www.karenglaziertarot.co.uk
ARIES 21 March - 20 April
Change continues around you but now you’re starting to see
the dawn of a new day. There’s nothing to fear. The worst of it’s
behind you. You’ve worked long and hard, put up with much, and
now it’s time for your efforts to bear fruit. Claim your
independence, be yourself, and apologise to no one. Career gets
a boost which in turn benefits your finances. Your intuition guides
you well so pay heed to it.
TAURUS 21 April - 21 May
You’re asked to offer emotional support. Be honest in your
answers and don’t be tempted to say what you feel others want to
hear. That damages others, you, and your reputation. Questions
over commitments and marriage surface and can cause sleepless
nights if you let them. If you yourself can’t commit to something
wholeheartedly then don’t go down that route. It’ll lead to bigger
issues later on. Matters regarding female health could be a concern.
GEMINI 22 May - 21 June
By rights you should be feeling calm, centred and exude an
air of gentle nurturing. It brings others flocking to your side; with
many wanting to repay your previous kindnesses to them. Of
course there is another side to all this fluffy bunny stuff. There’s
some work to be done so you’d best be prepared to crack on. A
patient and methodical approach is best as nothing is going to
move along at full speed.
CANCER 22 June - 23 July
Before you commit to anything ensure you read, and fully
understand, the small print. This isn’t the time to indulge in wishful
thinking. Be realistic. Fortunately, a strong man guides you. He
thinks with his head, not his heart, and sees the pitfalls ahead.
Listen carefully to his words and be prepared to act on his advice.
This puts you in the right place, at the right time, to benefit from
changes heading your way.
LEO 24 July - 23 August
Patience is needed now with at least one situation. Don’t
despair if things aren’t moving forward as fast as you would like
because the wait benefits you eventually. What does come your
way turns out to be far better than anything you could have imagined
and was well worth the delay. Sadly your good fortune could
lead to another person feeling a little jealous. Watch your back;
someone isn’t who you thought. Beware your words!
LIBRA 24 September - 23 October
The only way to deal with bullying aspects is walk away. This
isn’t cowardice nor defeat. Walk away and regroup. Come back
bigger and better than ever before. During this time keep your
own counsel. Beware of whom you share your ideas and plans
with. Someone isn’t as they first appear. Be patient. Hold ups or
blockages to progress are placed for a purpose. Fighting against
them serves no purpose. You’re on the right track.
SCORPIO 24 October - 22 November
Life a bit disappointing? Possibly, but beware of not being
that down in the doldrums that you miss something small which
could lead to something far bigger, and better, than you ever
imagined. Be clear headed in your thinking and seek the wise
council of someone in the know. The family home provides shelter
from the storm and time spent there is time well spent. Look to
your creature comforts and be kind to yourself.
SAGITTARIUS 23 November - 21 December
Potentially, one relationship ends and another, more exciting
and promising, begins. This could be in a career or business
sense or a physical one. Either way, communication is key and
you’re required to be open and honest in all you say and do.
Likewise you need to listen carefully to the views of others. There
could be some upset but concentrate on building for your future.
Roll your sleeves up, be determined, and apply yourself.
CAPRICORN 22 December - 20 January
Time for a change of tack. Heartfelt discussions are needed
and both parties need to state their case and be heard. That’s you
and your significant other. Are you about to turn your joint world
on its head? Nothing to be afraid of as conversations give the
chance for fresh starts. Be open and honest and all will be well.
Business may be affected and there may be some areas that will
take some unravelling.
AQUARIUS 21 January - 19 February
There’s a charmer in your midst. Sounds good doesn’t it?
Sadly, they’re not all they’re cracked up to be and there’s the
potential for you to be let down. Still, other new faces provide
interest and friendship and a wedding or engagement is a time of
celebration for everybody. A break from the norm is encouraged.
Even if it amounts to nothing more than a walk in the countryside it
will blow the cobwebs away.
VIRGO 24 August - 23 September
There’s more hard work ahead. Your only option is to get on
with it. But before you do take time out for yourself. You may feel
out on a limb but this time is important for you to see situations
from all angles. It’s about balance; being fair to others, taking
nothing for granted, and acknowledging your part in events. Using
your wisdom to ensure resentments don’t fester sees you succeed.
You’re more than capable.
PISCES 20 February - 20 March
Too much responsibility? Then off load some of it. Others
are more than capable and you shouldn’t feel guilty for saying ‘no’.
They may be a bit ‘put out’. Tough! Stand firm in your decisions.
You’ve done your bit and can step away for a while. Offer advice
if asked but do no more. Tangled situations will resolve
themselves given time and you’re not to make decisions before
you’ve assess all the facts. Be realistic.
12 EQUITY RELEASE
internet. People want clear advice, not
being sold something that might be
completely wrong for them”.
Equity release Lifetime Mortgages are
increasingly popular, helped by interest
rates falling to record lows, tempting
homeowners that have seen pensions and
savings ravaged. The lowest interest rates
are now just over 2.50% and with options to
pay monthly, or to simply pay nothing and
roll-up until the home is later sold, it’s
understandable that more homeowners are
considering Equity Release to support them
in retirement.
Simon Chalk of Laterliving now!, the area’s
leading local specialist Equity Release
Planner, believes that there has been no
better time to consider this option for
providing capital or boosting income for the
over 55s. During the current crisis, Simon
has noticed a sharp rise in people looking
to pay for care privately at home, with
Equity Release providing a means of
meeting the cost.
"Anyone looking to unlock tax-free cash tied
up in their home to help themselves or their
loved ones, can now benefit from access to
substantial sums of money at the lowest
interest rates.”
Many people are looking to help and
support their families as they struggle with
the crippling financial consequences of the
pandemic. “Equity release can be a sensible
solution to a problem, but it isn’t always the
right one, so sound financial advice from an
independent specialist is essential. Clients
often turn to us, having been swamped with
sales brochures and emails from large
national firms advertising on TV and
Under the current social-distancing rules,
Laterliving now! offer free consultations by
phone, Facetime, WhatsApp or Zoom. They
can help people decide if Equity Release is
right for them, without needing to actually
meet. When lockdown ends, Simon says
they will once again offer safe home visits
for those who prefer it."
15 GOVERNMENT GUIDANCE
Everyone’s actions have helped to reduce the
transmission of coronavirus in our communities.
Fatalities and infection rates continue to fall.
The government has set out its plan to return life to
as near normal as we can, for as many people as we
can, as quickly and fairly as possible in order to
safeguard livelihoods, but in a way that continues
to protect our communities and our NHS. The most
important thing we can continue to do is to stay
alert, control the virus, and, in doing so, save lives.
This guidance explains the measures that will help
you to stay alert and stay as safe as possible as
we continue to respond to the challenges of
coronavirus.
On 19 June, the UK CMOs changed the COVID-19
alert level from level four to level three following a
recommendation by the Joint Biosecurity Centre.
This means that the virus is considered to be in
general circulation but transmission is no longer
high or rising exponentially. As a result, the UK
Government has decided to continue to ease
restrictions in a manner that is safe, cautious and
consistent with our plan.
As of 4 July, this will mean:
• you can meet in groups of up to two households
(your support bubble counts as one household) in
any location - public or private, indoors or outdoors.
You do not always have to meet with the same
household - you can meet with different
households at different times. However, it remains
the case - even inside someone’s home - that you
should socially distance from anyone not in your
household or bubble. This change also does not
affect the support you receive from your carers
• when you are outside you can continue to meet in
groups of up to six people from different
households, following social distancing guidelines
• those who have been able to form a support
bubble (i.e. those in single adult households) can
continue to have close contact as if they live with
the other people in the bubble, but you should not
change who you have formed a support bubble with
• additional businesses and venues, including
restaurants, pubs, cinemas, visitor attractions,
hotels, and campsites will be able to open - but we
will continue to keep closed certain premises where
the risks of transmission may be higher
• other public places, such as libraries, community
centres, places of worship, outdoor playgrounds
and outdoor gyms will be able to open
• you can stay overnight away from your home with
your own household or support bubble, or with
members of one other household (where you need
to keep social distancing)
• it will be against the law to gather in groups larger
than 30 people, except for a limited set of
circumstances to be set out in law. Police will have
the power to break up groups larger than 30, apart
from these exceptions
Moving forward, people will be trusted to continue
acting responsibly by following this and related
guidance, subject to an upper legal limit on
gatherings (as described above). The overwhelming
majority of the British public have complied with
the regulations, and the wider guidance on how to
keep themselves and their friends and family as
safe as possible. Taking this into account, we trust
people to continue acting responsibly, and to
follow the guidance on what they should and
should not do.
These changes will reopen much of society and the
economy, but it is essential that everyone in the
country goes about their lives in a manner which
reduces the risk of transmission, whether they are
at work, leisure, or using public services. When you
leave your home, you should follow the guidelines
on staying safe outside your home. You should
continue to avoid close contact and remain socially
distant from anyone you do not live with or who
is not in your support bubble - even inside other
people’s homes.
You should wash your hands regularly. This will help
to protect you and anyone you come into contact
with and is critical to keeping everyone safe.
17 HEALTH & FITNESS
in the fresh air and enjoying the sunshine definitely
helped to clear some headspace each day.
What walking can do for your health
During lockdown I was furloughed, and my husband
John had to work from home. We decided to use
the time it usually took us to commute (an hour
each way) to walk. We'd never really walked as a
form of exercise before...we'd never really taken
any form of exercise before, so this was something
new.
We worked out a route and as we were used to
getting up at 6am to travel to our respective jobs
and we decided that staying in that routine seemed
sensible so we wouldn't be too out of sync on our
return to work. The mornings were gradually
becoming lighter at the start of lockdown so
although we were heading out early it wasn't dark.
We have walked for just over an hour every day for
ten weeks and this is what we've discovered.
Walking reduces blood pressure - Johns blood
pressure had been sneaking upwards and just
before lockdown our GP had been monitoring it
with a view to him starting blood pressure
medication. When it became clear that he wasn't
going to be examined by a doctor for some time I
was concerned enough to buy a home blood
pressure monitor online. We tested it out to make
sure the readings matched those of the clinic then
forgot about it! After six weeks (on the date he was
supposed to have been returning the GP) we tried
it and discovered his blood pressure was just within
normal range. By week ten it was well within the
normal range. Mine too has dropped significantly.
Walking trims your waistline - Both John and I had
the start of middle age spread. Over ten weeks I've
dropped a dress size and John has discovered he's
wearing the trousers that prior to lockdown he'd
been considering donating to charity.
Walking relieves arthritis pain - After four weeks
John noticed that his arthritis pain seemed less. This
seemed counterintuitive so I consulted the arthritis
society website and discovered that walking is
recommended because it does indeed help reduce
inflammation and stiffness in your joints. The
important thing to remember is to walk 'correctly'.
Hold your head up; keep your neck, shoulders and
back relaxed; swing your arms naturally, with a
slightly bent elbow; tighten your stomach muscles
a little to give yourself a supported core, and
breathe deeply as you walk.
Walking improves your mental wellbeing - At the
start of lockdown I think we both felt really anxious
about all the uncertainty. As the weeks progressed,
while we walked awe discussed our worries and
thrashed out solutions to some of the problems we
faced or might face. I certainly began to feel in a
better place mentally and as though I could cope
better with life in general. Being outside, breathing
Crucially throughout this period neither of us has
felt like we were ‘exercising’. Walking felt natural
and easy. I know this article is anecdotal and
personal but there is plenty of research to support
exercise being almost as important as diet in
controlling type-2 diabetes; that it helps with
balance and co-ordination and so helps to prevent
falls in older people, meaning they are more likely
to stay out of hospital, which at the moment is even
more important than usual, and finally that it helps
boost the immune system which is important for
obvious reasons right now.
We will definitely continue to fit walking into our
day even when life returns to a more normal
pattern.
23 MENTAL HEALTH
There are some simple things you can do to help you take care
of your mental health and wellbeing during these times of
uncertainty. Doing so will help you think clearly, and make sure
you are able to look after yourself and those you care about.
Here are 10 ways you can help improve your mental health and
wellbeing if you are worried or anxious about the coronavirus
outbreak.
Stay connected with people
Maintaining healthy relationships with people we trust is
important for our mental wellbeing. Now that the government
guidelines allow more social activity outside, this may feel
easier. Just make sure you follow the latest government
guidance. Think about how you can continue to stay in touch
with friends and family, especially if you or they need to stay at
home. You could try phone calls, video calls or social
media – whether it's with people you normally saw often or
reconnecting with old friends.
Talk about your worries
It's normal to feel a bit worried, scared or helpless about the
current situation. Remember: it's OK to share your concerns
with others you trust – and doing so may help them too. If you
cannot speak to someone you know or if doing so has not
helped, there are plenty of helplines you can try instead.
Support and help others
Helping someone else can benefit you as well as them, so try
to be a little more understanding of other people's concerns,
worries or behaviours at this time. Try to think of things you
can do to help those around you. Is there a friend or family
member nearby you could message?
Feel prepared
As the outbreak continues, it can help to work through the
implications of government guidelines so you feel more
prepared and less concerned. If you are continuing to stay at
home, then it can help to think through a typical week: how
will it continue to be affected and what will you need to do to
solve any problems? If you have not already, you might want
to talk with your employer. Find out about government
support for businesses and self-employed people and
understand your sick pay and benefits rights.
Look after your body
Our physical health has a big impact on how we feel. At times
like these, it can be easy to fall into unhealthy patterns of
behaviour that end up making you feel worse. Try to eat
healthy, well-balanced meals, drink enough water and exercise
regularly. Avoid smoking or drugs, and try not to drink too
much alcohol. Going for a walk, run or bike ride can really help
lift your mood and clear your mind – just remember to keep a
safe distance from others.
Stick to the facts
Find a credible source you can trust – such as GOV.UK or the
NHS website – and fact-check information you get from
newsfeeds, social media or other people. You could also use
the GOV.UK Coronavirus Information Service on WhatsApp.
This automated chatbot covers the most common questions
about coronavirus. Message the coronavirus chatbot to get
started. Think about how possibly inaccurate information
could affect others too. Try not to share information without
fact-checking against credible sources. You might also want to
consider limiting the time you spend watching, reading or
listening to coverage of the outbreak, including on social
media, and think about turning off breaking-news alerts on
your phone. You could set yourself a specific time to read
updates or limit yourself to a couple of checks a day.
Stay on top of difficult feelings
Concern about the coronavirus outbreak is perfectly normal.
However, some people may experience intense anxiety that
can affect their daily life. Try to focus on the things you can
control, such as your behaviour, who you speak to, and where
and how often you get information. It's fine to acknowledge
that some things are outside of your control, but if constant
thoughts about coronavirus are making you feel anxious or
overwhelmed, try www.nhs.uk for some ideas to help manage
your anxiety.
Do things you enjoy
If we're feeling worried, anxious or low, we might stop doing
things we usually enjoy. Focusing on your favourite hobby,
relaxing or connecting with others can help with anxious
thoughts and feelings. If you cannot do the things you normally
enjoy because you're continuing to stay at home, think about
how you could adapt them, or try something new. There are
lots of free tutorials and courses online, and people are coming
up with inventive new ways to do things, like hosting online
pub quizzes and music concerts.
Focus on the present
Focusing on the present, rather than worrying about the
future, can help with difficult emotions and improve our
wellbeing. Relaxation techniques can also help some people
deal with feelings of anxiety.
Look after your sleep
Good-quality sleep makes a big difference to how we feel
mentally and physically, so it's important to get enough. Try to
maintain regular sleeping patterns and keep up good sleep
hygiene practices – like avoiding screens before bed, cutting
back on caffeine and creating a restful environment.
The NHS mental health and wellbeing advice pages have a
self-assessment, as well as audio guides and other tools you
can use while staying at home. We also have guidance and
information to help others if someone you know is struggling
with their mental health.
Remember, it's quite common to experience short-lived
physical symptoms when you are feeling low or anxious. Some
of these, like feeling hot or short of breath, could be confused
with symptoms of coronavirus. If this happens, try to distract
yourself. When you feel less anxious, see if you still have the
symptoms that worried you. If you're still concerned, visit the
NHS website.
How A Haunted Farmhouse Inspired Local
Author
The 3-week old baby sleeping in the dark
corner was the only person in the room.
The old woman sleeping in her chair downstairs
was disturbed by a noise above. She wearily
climbed the stairs and opened the bedroom
door, in time to watch pokers clanking
awkwardly stabbing the embers. That baby was
me and the old lady my grannie when we
resided in a very old farmhouse in Wiltshire.
Her tale lingered on and for many years I
wanted to pen a ghost story.
‘The Curse of Becton Manor’ isn’t about that
farmhouse but a haunted Elizabethan manor
house in Derbyshire and the trials and
tribulations of two families centuries apart. In
1597 the tensions are borne from religious
strife and the persecution of ‘witches’. In 1957,
sordid secrets are not given up without a fight.
The author of two excellent books, Anne
Grange (‘Inside Outside’ and ‘Distortion’)
recommends the debut novel of Patricia Ayling:
‘A thrilling page turner with characters that
come to life; full of fascinating historical details.’
Patricia, who now lives in Killamarsh says, ‘This
story has had hundreds of changes and made
me realise that it is not easy to pen a book.
I would strongly urge potential writers to revisit
their work several times, chopping
unnecessary detail; omitting excessive
description, adverbs and punctuation. Don’t be
disheartened by rejections which are often
subjective.
http://wildrosemarywritingservices
wordpress.com)
The Curse of Becton Manor is available on
Amazon either as a Kindle book or paperback.
The Last Tea Bag by Michael G Atkinson
A very relevant story about a 77 year old man
who is down to his last tea bag, no money, no
food, no heating etc and his journey to make a
difference and the people he meets along the
way to downing street
Walking from Doncaster to London to see the
Prime Minister, it’s moving, relevant,
heartbreakingly funny and so worth reading.
The author has written a time travel trilogy,
The Diary of Nicholas Oldman, a book of short
stories, Twisty, a book about a serial killer,
Searching for Sam, each are very different and
each are excellent but this latest the Last Tea
Bag is my favourite.
All are available in paper back or kindle on
Amazon.
My book would still be gathering dust on the
hard drive, were it not for the support of Anne
Grange (contacted via Facebook or
33 RECIPE
Cool, Creamy & Delicious
Preparation time: 15 mins
Cooking time: 10 mins plus chilling and
freezing time
Serves: 6
3. Pour into a bowl and cover the
surface of the custard with cling film...to
prevent a skin forming), allow to cool,
then chill for 30 mins.
4. At this point you can use your
ice cream maker according to the
manufacturer's instructions.
Ingredients
1 x 400ml can coconut milk
150ml double cream
1 x 160g can coconut cream
50g golden caster sugar
4 large egg yolks
25g desiccated coconut, toasted
Method
1. Whisk the sugar and the egg yolks in
a bowl until thick and creamy. Pour the
coconut milk, double cream and
coconut cream in a saucepan and heat
until it almost reaches boiling point.
Pour this coconut milk mixture in a slow
stream over the egg yolks and sugar,
whisking constantly.
2. Rinse out the saucepan (important to
stop any burning and tainting of the ice
cream) and return to a low heat. Pour in
the custard mixture and stir in the
desiccated coconut. Continue to stir
constantly for 5-10 mins until the
custard thickens slightly and you can
trace a line through it with a wooden
spoon.
5. If you don't have an ice cream maker
transfer the chilled custard to a small
freezer-safe container with a lid and
freeze for 1 hr, then use a fork or
electric whisk to really churn through
the ice cream to break up the ice
crystals so that the mixture is the same
consistency all the way through. Pop it
back into the freezer for another 2-3
hrs, whisking it about every half hour,
then cover the surface with a sheet of
cling film and freeze with the lid on until
as firm as ice cream. Take out of the
freezer 10 mins before serving so it’s
easy to scoop.
37 GARDENING
Back in May garden centres became some of the
first businesses allowed to reopen to the public.
For gardeners stuck at home (even though we
understood and supported the lockdown), it's
been a frustrating time. We've been unable to
plant during one of the best springs I can ever
remember.
And for many of the UK's growers it has been
devastating. Millions of lost plants nurtured to
be at their best by Easter were lost. The scale of
the issue was mind-boggling. Garden centres
and nurseries usually make the bulk of their
income during the early growing season as
people prepare their plots for the summer but
instead they've been forced to compost or
recycle millions of plants, leaving one in three
growers in serious financial difficulties, with little
possibility of recouping their losses later in the
year.
I was glad to see nurseries and garden centres
reopening and in spite of my own apprehension
about venturing out, I decided to go to my local
garden centre reasoning that the open outdoor
spaces meant transmission of coronavirus was
less likely and it would be easier to maintain
social distancing.
There were staff in the car park and the queue
markings were 2m apart. The trolleys were
cleaned before being handed to the customers
and social distancing was observed throughout
the one-way system. There were fewer plants on
display which puzzled me for a second until I
realised that growers couldn't take the risk of
planting a few weeks before when they had no
idea whether they would have to destroy those
plants too. Such a heart-breaking decision for
them to have to make.
My own garden has been a source of solace
throughout lockdown, but what has been
particularly nice is the number of people who
have discovered gardening during this period.
There is a lot of psychological research which
concludes that nurturing plants and flowers
diverts our attention away from stresses and
anxieties in our lives and goodness knows there's
been way too much stress and anxiety recently.
So, as we hit July is there anything easy which
you can still plant, and which will still grow? The
good news is yes.
Nasturtiums can be sown throughout this
month. They are known for their brightly
coloured flowers and attractive foliage. There
are trailing, climbing, and dwarf varieties. The
showy flowers can be single or double and come
in fiery shades of reds, oranges, and yellows.
Leaves are pale green and umbrella-shaped with
long stems. They are the perfect flowers for
beginner gardeners so if the kids have been
dying to have a go at gardening these are your
go-to plant. Sow the seeds and within 7-10 days,
you should see sprouting. They are drought
tolerant and ideal for hanging baskets and
containers. Even better, you can add the flowers,
buds and young leaves to salads, and they have
the most wonderful peppery taste.
Love-in-the-mist are easy to grow and have
distinctive seed heads. These can be sown until
early July and also again in September so they
will get a head start for next year.
And of course, you can still plant sunflowers.
Who doesn't love a sunflower? Plant one for
each member of the family and see whose grows
the most. You could give prizes for the tallest,
the prettiest or the largest flower.
Happy gardening.
