Mother’s desperate bid for family
holiday – but time is running out
• By Bea Gooding
DANNI RASMUSSEN fears
time with her terminally ill son
is quickly running out.
She always dreamed of
travelling all over the country,
making memories as a family of
four before it was too late, and
now that dream is almost coming
true.
Last year, her eldest son Alize
won a family trip to the Gold
Coast in a competition run by
radio station MoreFM for the
kindness he showed his younger
brother, Andre, who has periventricular
leukomalacia – a terminal
brain injury caused by a lack
of oxygen to the brain – among
other complications.
Covid-19 ground those plans
to a halt this year, which was why
Ms Rasmussen believed it was
the perfect time to embark on
the road trip of her dreams – but
sourcing funding for it was a different
story.
“I’ve always wanted to travel
with the children and do something
as a family, but I wanted
to wait until they got older,” she
said.
“We almost lost him [Andre]
– I got to his room and he was
completely purple. I thought it
was his time to pass away.”
The life-threatening incident
happened three weeks ago which
she said put things into perspective.
“But he eventually started
breathing again. A lot of things
came into realisation at that point
so we’ve decided to do the trip in
September before it’s too late.”
She has set up a givealittle page
to cover the costs of the four-week
trip, needing at least $10,000 for
transport, accommodation food
and any costs associated with
Andre’s medical equipment.
LOVE: Danni
Rasmussen holds
Andre, 4, with Avie
Avana, 2, and Alize,
11, who will soon
embark on a family
road trip.
PHOTO: BEA
GOODING
She said the goal alone was
at a minimum, which did not
account for activities and any
unexpected costs along the way.
League clubrooms get go-ahead
• By Bea Gooding
THE HALSWELL Hornets
Rugby League Club has been
given the go-ahead to build new
clubrooms.
Work on the $2m facility is
expected to start in November
and will replace the old earthquake
damaged clubrooms in
Halswell Domain.
Said club committee member
Colin Fenwick:
“We started
this process 10
years ago, so
we can’t wait
– we’re all looking
forward
Colin Fenwick
to it.
“We reckon
we’ll have one of the best rugby
league facilities in the South
Island, potentially even in New
Zealand.”
The previous clubrooms,
which were 40-years-old, were
deemed unsafe to occupy,
which Mr Fenwick said was
“not worthwhile” to bring them
up to standard because the
repairs would have cost more
than the construction of a new
building.
The club was able to acquire
a building consent for a new
building and was currently going
through a process to obtain
the very best
knitwear
building will replace the earthquake-damaged building below.
a resource consent.
Visitors can expect a “warm
with new changing rooms,
a gym and places for storage
which was up to “international
codes.
The space will also be available
for members to hire for
events on a regular basis, such
as birthday parties.
Securing funding had been
an issue over the years, but
they now have money from
insurance claims which took
eight years to organise, as well
as funding from the lotteries
commission.
“We consider ourselves in a
fortunate situation to be able
to provide a service for a lot of
people, 365 days a year,” said
Mr Fenwick.
Once construction begins,
the clubrooms will take
approximately nine months
to complete, which will be
located on-site at the Halswell
Domain.
“It’s important that we can have
those fun memories with him
anywhere in our homeland especially
when he’s not with us anymore,” she
said.
“There will be nothing worse than
going to do those things and feeling
that he missed out.”
In 2015 Ms Rasmussen was overjoyed
to learn she was pregnant with
triplets.
That joy quickly turned sour when
a raft of complications arose, causing
the loss of one of her babies during
early pregnancy, with the other two
babies born prematurely at 24 weeks.
The twins were “fighting for their
lives” following an emergency Caesarean,
but weighing in at 345gm,
baby Ace did not survive.
Andre clung to life weighing
890gm, undergoing serious operations
to keep him alive, but he developed
PVL while in the neonatal intensive
care unit which caused brain
damage, and was also born with
chronic lung disease and epilepsy.
“It’s horrible watching him suffer,”
she said.
Raising Alize, Andre and Avie
Avana as a single mother of three
was “very exhausting” at times, but
the love she felt for them was what
kept her going.
Leading Lady: A life in the spotlight
by Vivienne allan
Articulate and intelligent, Eve Poole had a passion for the theatre andthe arts.
Her desire to protect one of Invercargill’s cultural icons led her into politics and she
was elected as the city’s first woman mayor in 1983.
Cath Tizard broke similar ground in Auckland that year – the two becoming trailblazers
at each end of the country. As a member of the QEII Arts Council, Eve played an active
role in encouraging the visual and performing arts across the country. She was equally
at home on the stage as an actor and director; on popular national TV shows, and
as a member of the NZ Committee on Women. Vivienne Allan tells the story of her
mother’s life with warmth and honesty, beginning with the struggle to find passage out
of Germany in the 1930s. When war broke out Eve, still only 17 and living with her
family in Tel Aviv, joined the British Army, serving as a driver in Egypt. There she met
her NZ husband and, after discharge, moved to Invercargill to raise their family. Eve’s
practicality, determination and humanity saw her retain the mayoralty for four terms
until her death in 1992.
Lionheart
by Ben Kane
1179 - Henry II’s armies have swept through England, Wales - and now Ireland.
Irish nobleman Ferdia has been imprisoned in Wales to ensure the good behaviour of
his rebellious father. But during a skirmish to relieve a castle under attack, Ferdia saves
the life of the man who would become one of the most legendary warriors in history:
Richard Coeur de Lion. The Lionheart.Taken as Richard’s squire, Ferdia crosses the
Narrow Sea to defeat the rebellious nobles in Aquitaine, besieging castles and fighting
bloody battles with brutal frequency.
But treachery and betrayal lurk around every corner. Infuriated by his younger brother
Richard’s growing reputation, the king’s heir Henry rebels. And Ferdia learns that the
biggest threat to Richard’s life may not be a foreign army - but Richard’s own family.
Metamorphosis:
A Scientist’s Story
by Glen Metcalf
“There has been a revolution in women’s lives in the ninety years since I was born.
We have emerged from a stultifying era when we were chattels of men into an age
when even the most powerful positions in New Zealand are open to women. I have
lived through stirring times.”
The story of one woman’s transformation from a traditional Kiwi ‘housewife’ of the
1950s into a Career Fellow of the New Zealand Medical Research Council
The Silk House
by Kayte nunn
Weaving. Healing. Haunting. Australian history teacher Thea Rust arrives at an
exclusive boarding school in the British countryside only to find that she is to look
after the first intake of girls in its 150-year history. She is to stay with them in Silk
House, a building with a long and troubled past, where the shadows hide more
mysteries than she could ever imagine. In the late 1700s, Rowan Caswell leaves
her village to work in the home of an English silk merchant. In London, Mary-Louise
Stephenson lives amid the clatter of the weaving trade and dreams of becoming a
silk designer, a job that is the domain of men. Arriving in the market town of Oxleigh,
she brings with her a length of fabric woven with a pattern of deadly plants that will
have far-reaching consequences for all who dwell in the silk house.
Untamed:
Stop pleasing, start living
by Glennon doyle
Who were you before the world told you who to be? Part inspiration, part memoir, Untamed
explores the joy and peace we discover when we stop striving to meet the expectations of
the world, and instead dare to listen to and trust in the voice deep inside us.
Soulful and uproarious, forceful and tender, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a
galvanising wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible
mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to
fully live. It is also the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set
boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honour our anger and heartbreak, and unleash
our truest, wildest instincts.Untamed shows us how to be brave.
Volunteers go with flow to share heritage
A RESTORED 19th-century
waterwheel – along with a group
of hardy volunteers – is driving
interest in a popular heritage
park overlooking Lyttelton
Harbour.
Orton Bradley Park in Charteris
Bay is home to one of the few
operating historical waterwheels
in New Zealand, along with Canterbury’s
oldest stone structure
– the Old Stone Cottage – built
in 1848.
Supported by a city council
heritage incentive grant, the
ongoing maintenance of the
rare waterwheel and old stables
continues to help draw people to
the site.
City council head of urban
regeneration, design and heritage
Carolyn Ingles said that the
waterwheel and stables are very
worthy of the city’s support.
“While Christchurch continues
to look to the future, it is equally
important to value our past and
the early innovation that has
helped shape our region,” Ms
Ingles said.
“Both the stables and the mill
house are scheduled as significant
heritage items in the District
Plan.”
Park manager Ian Luxford
said its owner, Orton Bradley,
devised a clever system in 1893
using water – via the waterwheel
– to drive a generator to power
HARD-WORKING: Malcolm Pearson, 90, Dick Barnett, 93, Colin McLeod, 80, and Paul Willan, 80,
have shown a long commitment to Orton Bradley Park and its history.
his home and various tools,
including a grindstone for blade
shearers.
Mr Luxford, who has overseen
the park for 12 years, said the
grant has helped ensure that the
waterwheel continues to operate,
and – along with the rest of the
park’s heritage precinct – offer a
special insight into colonial life in
Canterbury.
“Bradley imported the waterwheel
from Britain,” he said.
“It was the time of the industrial
revolution and waterwheels
were being pulled out of factories
and workshops and replaced, so
Bradley brought one out here to
use on his farm.
“It is an amazing heritage
piece, providing electricity for the
homestead, and a really important
part of our colonial history
and the area’s development as
people made the most of what
they had.”
Mr Luxford said Mr Bradley
“was really an innovator, rather
than a farmer.”
After taking over the property
from his father in 1892, Bradley
held a lifelong interest in science
and technology, and was a
pioneer in ecology, recognising
the importance of habitats.
Mr Luxford said that volunteers
– aged in their 70s and 80s
– “help power the park today.”
He said that the restored flax
mill house, farm buildings,
stables and machinery are all
in working order, “thanks to
our volunteers,” who have also
maintained the replica of the
original Bradley family home,
reconstructed from park timber
and now a summer cafe.
“We are very fortunate to
have a group of dedicated volunteers
who carry out a range of
maintenance projects, including
recladding buildings, creating
special items in our workshop
and ensuring that our heritage
precinct is well-maintained,” Mr
Luxford said.
“One of the volunteers has
painted the heritage buildings
several times.”
He said that all the volunteers
have shown amazing commitment
to the park and its history.
“Today we have so many families
coming to enjoy the park,
splash in the stream and explore
the heritage buildings.”
People visiting the 650ha
site can also take in walking
and mountain bike tracks, an
adventure playground, a waterfall
and native trees. It remains a
working farm 175 years later.
customers to local butchery
There are two distinctive characteristics about
the small local butcher shop in Selwyn Street,
Everybody’s Butchery. Firstly, it is owned and
operated by a woman, and in this traditionally maledominated
industry you don’t find many women,
and secondly it specialises in authentic German
smallgoods, made from scratch on the premises.
Owner Lisa Willert trained as a butcher in her
home country of Germany, though it wasn’t her first
career choice.
“Originally I wanted to train as a joiner, but was
told I wasn’t strong enough, so I went into butchery
instead,” Lisa explains.
After spending the next three years in her
hometown learning all aspects of the butchery trade,
Lisa wanted to “see the world”, with her travels
eventually bringing her to New Zealand in 2009.
After working for the next few years, she purchased
Everybody’s Butchery
seven years ago at age
23.
Since then she has
gained a growing
number of satisfied
customers, who
flock there for the
traditional German
smallgoods she and
her assistant make
onsite every week.
Many of the recipes
have been passed
on to her from her
grandfather, who was also a butcher,
and the range includes salamis,
sausages, biersticks and beef jerky.
“I don’t use any fillers, they are
all made from pure meat and pure
spices,” Lisa says. “And they are
suitable for keto, paleo and glutenfree
diets.”
Adding to the line-up, Lisa offers a
small selection of other delicatessen
products, including olives, free range
eggs, and Emilio’s cheese made in
Darfield.
Of course, Everybody’s Butchery
caters for all their customers’ meat
requirements, stocking the full
range of beef, pork and lamb cuts,
all of which are locally sourced.
(Incidentally,
Everybody’s
Butchery was established
in 1906, and is the
oldest butchery shop in
Christchurch.)
Customers can also
go to the website
everybodysbutchery.co.nz
where they can browse
the range of quality meats
and smallgoods, and click
and collect their purchases
or click and have them
delivered to home or work.
Lisa Willert displays a selection of her authentic
German smallgoods.
The shop is also licensed to process animals from
hunting, and home kills.
“Kiwis like hunting, so I do a lot of that
processing,” Lisa says.
Lisa’s husband, also from Germany, is in the food
business too, operating a food truck in Manchester
Street. They have two young children, so it’s a busy
life for this hardworking pair, who have made New
Zealand home and are providing a fusion of Kiwi
and German taste traditions for us to enjoy.
Changing the perception of libraries
MIKE MORONEY is on a
mission to change people’s
perceptions of libraries – and
librarians.
He has launched a new library
interview series, The Unlikely
Librarian, which features conversations
with local writers in
equally unlikely locations.
Award-winning author, performer
and poet Ben Brown will
be the first to feature in the series
which kicks off next month,
where book lovers will also be
able to soak up the conversation
in person.
For Mr Moroney, of Linwood,
it was an opportunity to reach a
younger age group – particularly
men – who may not realise all
the resources and facilities that a
library can offer.
“I wanted to get out and about
among the community and find
a way to engage people and stoke
interest in our libraries, along
with sharing fantastic works by
some of our best local writers,”
he said.
“There are so many creatives
living in my own neighbourhood
that I thought ‘why not start the
conversation in Lyttelton with a
poet and award-winning writer
and try out a friendly approach.”
Mr Moroney said people were
“It is also an opportunity for
come in many guises. For example,
I am over six feet, covered
“On meeting me, people are
Starfish Swimwear - making swimsuits
right here in Christchurch since 1997
Starfish have been making swimsuits
right here in Christchurch for over twenty
years. In that time they have heard plenty
of stories about swimsuits that stretched,
faded or just plain disintegrated and it’s a
common story. One that doesn’t need to be.
People need to know what they are
purchasing, what they can expect from
their swimwear. Chlorine resistant is
available, it has exceptional wear in pools,
heated spas, saunas or hydro-therapy and
you can have it. Starfish have it on the
racks now or you can choose to have one
made for you in only a few days.
Women know the annoyance trying to
buy a suit. You spend so much time looking
and trying on and in the end say: “It will
do”. Only to find themselves having to do it
again in six months time. Why go through
all that when you can actually get one that
will fit you properly and last.
It’s the same with children’s suits, they are
also available in chlorine resistant fabrics.
The great thing with that is children grow
out of their suits before they wear out. So
these suits can be handed down to the
next child or given to family or friends.
However if there is no one to pass them
on to they can be donated to a charity so
another family can use them. They are not
throw away clothing that only lasts one
child - they go on and on. That’s good for
everyone.
Call into Starfish they know swimwear
and they will help you make the choice
that’s right for you.
Starfish Swimwear is located at 239C
Colombo Street or phone 379 0009.
BIRDS OF THE ESTUARY
Tanya Jenkins is the manager of the
Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust, a
non-profit organisation formed in 2002
to protect one of New Zealand’s most
important coastal wetlands. Each week
she introduces a new bird found in the
estuary. Her column aims to raise the understanding
of the values and uniqueness of the area.
Protecting chicks makes
kingfisher aggressive
THE COLOURFUL little
kingfisher are found at several
sites around our estuary.
They prefer to perch rather
than walk on the ground on
mudflats.
You will see them on rocks,
logs, jetties and even washing
lines.
They eat insects, lizards and
mice but mainly crabs which they
return to their perch where they
batter the legs off before swallowing
the main body.
Pellets of indigestible remains
are regurgitated and you will see
these, together with piles of crab
legs on and near rocks when you
walk along the South New Brighton
jetty, which is a favourite dinner
table for these birds.
They may be a small bird but
are absolutely fearlessly aggressive
when protecting chicks and will
attack other birds coming too
close and even dive-bomb mammals
such as cats and dogs.
They nest inside trees and sand
cliffs where they repeatedly fly
HEALTH & AWARENESS
Joint pain: Do I have arthritis or
could it be mainly my muscles?
The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham
sees clients with a range of symptoms but
many of their middle-aged and senior clients
visit complaining of pain in one of their joints.
Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests
that a major part of the pain could be due
to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis.
“Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason
for the pain may be the muscles around
the joint,” she explains. The images show
how a muscle knot (the crosses) in a back
muscle can give hip pain (aches and pain
are the red areas in the drawings), a knot
in a muscle on the back of the shoulder
blade can give a deep pain in the front of
the shoulder and a muscle knot all the way
near the groin can give an ache in the knee
(especially at night in bed).
Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year
old client with severe arthritis who walked
with a stick, told her, “I will end up in
a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight
through my right leg due to pain in my hip
and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she
was walking with her stick but without the
severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was
one of the factors that made her muscles
spasm but the other was that older people
move less and the flexed position the hip
is in when we sit is particularly bad for
the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that
although the client was 89 and could have
been “given up on” or told to live with the
pain, she made a difference to her health
and wellbeing.
The same lack of movement can be the
reason for your knee pain or your shoulder
pain and the same few treatments could
make a huge difference for you.
At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques
(massage and triggerpoint deactivation
techniques) are used to release the muscles.
The client also gets a home exercise
program designed to mobilize and stretch
the joint, strengthen the important core
muscles and increase general strength and
SHOULDER
PAIN
KNEE PAIN
(the crosses are the areas of the muscle spasms, the red areas is where the pain is felt)
balance. They teach a movement sequence
that stretches the joint in all directions
whilst the client is able to lie safely on their
bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients.
In many cases having the muscles
released and being taught how to maintain
it, is enough to stay on top of the problem.
HIP PAIN
If severe arthritis is the underlying cause,
some maintenance therapy may be
necessary, but that is often more affordable
and, for older patients, better tolerated
than surgery. After only one treatment you
should know that it will work for you. Call
them before 31 July and save $50.00 on
that treatment
Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. The Blue Line Bus stops in front of the
door and there is ample parking. To enquire about joint pain treatment, phone 377-2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz
HOME & HEATING
Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home.
While insulation is important, it has been
recognised that it is dampness that is the real
villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes
Standards introduced by the government
effective from the 1st July 2019 now has
a requirement to install ground moisture
barriers, a key element in the armory to fight
moisture in the home.
Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a
report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under
Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed
the effects of placing Foam Concrete over
damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most
cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier
under the suspended wooden floor of your
home, even when there is no crawl space.
What makes a great
Heat Transfer System?
There are a number of Heat Transfer
systems on the market. Smooth-Air
ventilation specialists offer a range of
HTU Heat Transfer Units with carefully
selected components to optimise the
system:
They use insulated duct to transfer
the heated air with as little heat loss as
possible. The fan moves sufficient air
for the distance and number of rooms,
without being noisy. The diffusers send
the heat to the floor, not to skim the
across the ceilings. All components are
good quality - designed to operate for
years without problems.
Smooth-Air’s HTUs come in a range
of options: One to four rooms, with or
without thermostat and with a choice
of grilles and diffusers. HTUs improve
energy efficiency in your house, as you are
using excess heat. They have low power
consumption - only 80watts for the three
room system. Circulating air through the
house also reduces the risk of damp.
You can also choose the HTU version
with downjet diffusers, which throw the
warm air downwards to the floor. These
downjet diffusers can also be adjusted to
regulate which room receives the most
warm air.
An average size living room requires 2-4
kw of heating, yet appliances such as log
burners generate heat in the region of 10
-20kw. This leaves an excess of 8 -16kw of
heat which sits at high level in the heated
room, usually above door level.
SOUTHERN VIEW
Heat transfer units work best where very
hot air has ‘stratified’ into a layer near the
ceiling. So heat pumps, which circulate
warm air around the room with no
layering, are not suitable as a heat source
by themselves. However, if you have both
log burner and a heat pump, heat transfer
systems with thermostat can work very
well: The heat pump stops operating once
the heat from the fire has heated the room,
and the heat transfer kicks in above this
point, once there is a layer of hot air at the
ceiling.
