and that comes in the form in Netflix’s “The<br />
Old Guard.”<br />
Based on a five-series comic from veteran<br />
Greg Rucka, “The Old Guard” features a<br />
black woman (Gina Prince-Bythewood) at<br />
the helm, two butt kicking women (characters<br />
and actors) in the lead, and a sickeningly<br />
sweet gay couple who are intrinsic to<br />
the plot and cannot be erased out when the<br />
film is released to more restrictive countries.<br />
And if that is not enough of a draw for<br />
you, it has well-choreographed battle<br />
sequences, an arsenal of medieval weapons<br />
and it is a pretty decent film to boot with a<br />
moderate to high entertainment value.<br />
The movie centers around a quartet of<br />
mercenaries who have been fighting<br />
together for ages, and that is meant in a<br />
more literal sense than figurative. The<br />
group is led by Andy/Andromache of<br />

In Entertainment<br />
“e Old Guard” will have comic lovers clamoring for more<br />
Scythia (Charlize Theron) whose age is<br />
estimated at 1,000. For as long as she can<br />
remember, she has been dying in battle (or<br />
in other ways) only to be revived again for<br />
no apparent reason. Throughout her long<br />
life, she has found only a handful of other<br />
immortals like her and their weariness of<br />
the world and their place in it is beginning<br />
to show.<br />
After an indefinite leave of absence,<br />
Andy is brought back into the fold by<br />
Napoleonic War veteran Booker (Matthias<br />
Schoenaerts) and opposing Crusade fighters<br />
and longtime lovers Joe and Nicky<br />
(played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca<br />
Marinelli, respectively) to rescue a group of<br />
kidnapped girls in South Sudan.<br />
Upon arriving at their destination and<br />
learning more of the mission from former<br />
CIA operative James Copley (Chiwetel<br />
Ejiofor), the quartet quickly discover that it<br />
was nothing but a ruse to get them to<br />
unwillingly unveil their secrets.<br />
As they regroup from the betrayal and<br />
try to determine what Copley has on them<br />
and what he wants from it, they discover<br />
the existence of a new immortal, a young<br />
U.S. Marine named Nile Freeman (KiKi<br />
Layne) who died and revived serving in<br />
Afghanistan. While they have always had<br />
time on their side (or, minor spoiler, so it<br />
seems), it is now of the essence as they try<br />
to track down those who would do them<br />

This sweet 9-yearold<br />
should not be in a<br />
home with smaller<br />
animals and is selective<br />
with dogs her<br />
own size. Roxanne<br />
does have some medical conditions, including<br />
hip dysplasia and joint disease that will<br />
have to be monitored by her primary vet. Do<br />

harm, and those who plan to do harm to the<br />
new immortal as word of her rebirth<br />
spreads through the ranks.<br />
There are a lot of interesting things<br />
about this movie, and a lot of things that<br />
can drive one to levels of irritation. Most of<br />
the latter are minor quibbles, such as the<br />
pop infused soundtrack, the use of common<br />
language in ancient times and weak exposition<br />
by screenwriter Rucka, but the film<br />
itself takes some time to find its groove.<br />
But when it does and the medieval<br />
weapons start to fly, it is a fun yet thoughtful<br />
look at battle and world hardened warriors<br />
who are still trying to find their place<br />
in this universe.<br />
With the vast amounts of history and<br />
backstory to mine, it is no surprise that<br />
fans of the comic book series and cinematic<br />
adaptation are clamoring for more. It is set<br />
up perfectly for a sequel, and maybe a<br />
mini-series spin-off, and it’s not something<br />
I would be averse to either.<br />
