FEATURE | INTERVIEW
As with all research work, knowledge of this information
has led to further questions. Since 2018, our team has
deployed another type of beacon, this time equipped with
a camera (the CATS camera).
This data will make it possible to refine the information
on the sounds emitted by calves and females, to make a
complete description of breastfeeding (we were able to
film breastfeeding sessions, a rare phenomenon) and
to complete the missing information on behaviour in
depth.
A second international thesis co-supervision between
the University of Antananarivo and the University of
Paris Saclay France is being set up in order to carry out
this important work in the future.
What was your best memory during your career in
marine biology, an anecdote to tell?
Working in marine biology led me to travel and discover
different places. My best memory will remain the moment
when I first saw elephant seals and killer whales at
Kerguelen in the French Southern Antarctic Lands.
CES 3 ANNÉES DE RECHERCHE ONT PERMIS DE
DÉCRIRE POUR LA PREMIÈRE FOIS LE RÉPERTOIRE
DES SONS SOCIAUX DES BALEINES À BOSSE DANS LA
ZONE SUD-OUEST DE L’OCÉAN INDIEN
THESE THREE YEARS OF RESEARCH HAVE MADE IT
POSSIBLE TO DESCRIBE FOR THE FIRST TIME THE
REPERTOIRE OF SOCIAL SOUNDS OF HUMPBACK
WHALES IN THE SOUTH-WESTERN INDIAN OCEAN
