MYTHS & LEGENDS
THE POWER
OF WORDS
Tantely tapa-bata ka ny vava no mameno or half a
spoonful of honey and the mouth makes up for what’s
missing. The expression is often used during gift-giving
ceremonies in Madagascar, both official or simply inside
the family. The aim is for the gift to take on greater value.
Tantely
tapa-bata
L
’origine
l’expression « ny fo manolotra no mameno » qui signifie :
T
he origin of the saying goes back to an old story:
during the period of royalty, the Tandapa, the
king’s officers and employees, often used to
gather wild fruits, as well as honey, in the forests.
One day, the group in charge of gathering honey had trouble
finding any and had to penetrate further than intended into
the forest. After searching for several days, they managed to
find some, but ran out of food. Fearing the king’s reaction,
they did not dare dip into the honey contained in the vata
(a kind of metal container used to transport and conserve
honey). However, exhausted through hunger, they finally
had no other choice but to do so.
Back at the palace, the officer in charge of the group
had to find a good excuse, in order to avoid being put
to death. The container, which usually came back full,
was half empty. He started to recount the tale of their
adventures in the forest and found the appropriate words
to talk about the honey they had brought back: “Even if
there is less of it than usual, we have brought you the
best honey you have ever tasted, your majesty”. The
officer’s powers of eloquence enabled the group to avoid
punishment. His words thus replaced the missing honey
and filled up the container. Nowadays, people sometimes
use the expression “ny fo manolotra no mameno”, meaning
the heart fills up the missing space in the gift.
