CERTOSA DI BELRIGUARDO
TUSCANY, ITALY
www.certosadibelriguardo.com
The Belriguardo Charterhouse stands on the hills surrounding Siena. The
context is one of typically Tuscan beauty: a landscape where vines and olive
trees alternate in an array of colors, creating the atmospheres that have
traditionally marked this land as being perfectly suited to winegrowing. The
estate of about 75 acres, 8 of which are cultivated as vineyards, is located in
the Chianti dell Colline Senesi region, where the Sangiovese grape variety
holds the role of undisputed protagonist.
The historical building of the Charterhouse (on which work began in around
1340 and was completed in 1347) is enhanced by a row of cypresses and
stands at the entrance to the estate, on the slope overlooking Siena.
The first twelve monks settled at Belriguardo in 1348, as stated in the Papal
Bull dispatched in that same year to the Bishop of Siena by Pope Clement VI
from his exile in Avignon (France). The Cellar Registers on the other hand date
back to the end of the 16th century and testify to the existence of the
“bracelet pergola” and of an abundant and prestigious production of wine
sold on the Siena market. There is written evidence of the existence of
varieties such as “Moscatello” “Rosso” and “Bianco di Clausura”. These
time-honored names, originally given to the wines made by the monks, have
been partly revived to emphasize the close link between the estate’s
present-day production and that of its historical past.
The raw material is of fundamental importance in a production process based,
first and foremost, on the meticulous tending of the vineyards. The
purposely limited extension of the area cultivated with vines allows our experts
to prune the plants and thin out the bunches entirely by hand and the reduced
final yield per hectare reflects a philosophy which prioritizes exceptionally
high quality. The strong and secure character of their wines, their complex
perfumes, robust and elegant structure can all be attributed to the excellent
properties of the territory that is home to Certosa di Belriguardo.
Certosa di Belriguardo wines are made in compliance with state-of-the-art
methods, respecting the autochthonous characteristics of the grapes.
Enjoyable right to the last “joyful” and very aromatic drop,
its label features the eclipse of the sun and moon, referring
to the fact that it can be drunk by day or night. With its
prevalence of Sangiovese and a refined blend
of Syrah and Merlot, in the nose Baccano evokes the
perfume of the cherry trees that grow around the
Charterhouse. It has a broad, concentrated body, with firm,
almost crisp tannins which harmonise with a well-balanced
alcoholic component. The palate is caressed by a lingering
finish in crescendo.
ROSSO DI CLAUSURA ROSSO TOSCANO IGP
If the spicy component and the aromas of ripe fruit and
plum jam characterise the nose, undoubtedly its greatest
quality is the way it slips like velvet across the palate, where
it expresses all its roundness and persuasiveness in the
appetisingly savoury finish.
