John J. Tigert, University of Florida President from 1928–1947, co-founder of the Southeastern Conference and creator of the athletic grant-inaid program used in the NCAA today, once said, “I believe that athletics are a part of the true college education program. They teach what cannot be learned in the classroom.” Together, the following donors share the dream of academic and athletic excellence. Each of these Gators have contributed a minimum of $50,000 to establish an endowment. Frederick M. Abbott Football Endowment Established by Alfred McKethan. Alfred McKethan created Gator Booster’s first endowment by an indi vidual donor to honor linebacker Fred Abbott. Durward Alexander/James McLean Endowment Established by Nancy S. Alexander in memory of her father Durward Alexander, a former Gator player and his good friend and longtime Gator Fan, James McLean. athLetic education fund Ben Hill Griffin, Jr. Ben Hill Griffin III Debbie Adams Football Endowment She’s the main reason Gator Boosters works! Established by Frank and Joyce Oliver. Ruth Alexander Volleyball Endowment Established by Tony and Judy Bjorn. Ruth Alexander is honored as the first administrator of women’s athletics. The Griffin Family, from Frostproof, has made a significant endowment contribution to benefit deserving student-athletes in our men’s and women’s programs. The Griffin name is synonymous with success and Gators. Buddy Alexander Golf Endowment Established by Jack and Charo Berry in honor of the UF Head Coach for Men’s Golf, Buddy Alexander. The Stewart Murray “Skip” Alexander, Jr. Memorial Golf Endowment Established by numerous donors in memory of Skip Alexander, an American collegiate and professional golfer.
