John J. Tigert, University of Florida President<br />

from 1928–1947, co-founder of the Southeastern<br />

Conference and creator of the athletic grant-inaid<br />

program used in the NCAA today, once said, “I<br />

believe that athletics are a part of the true college<br />

education program. They teach what cannot be<br />

learned in the classroom.”<br />
