Clyde Hobby has always been a <strong>Gator</strong>. Among his<br />
earliest memories is listening to <strong>Gator</strong> football<br />
games on the radio with his dad. He attended his<br />
first game at Florida Field when he was 10 (1951)<br />
and watched his first television program of any<br />
kind when the <strong>Gator</strong>s beat Tulsa in the 1953<br />
<strong>Gator</strong> Bowl.<br />
Along the way, he converted his Georgia-Girl<br />
wife of over 50 years, Joy, into an avid <strong>Gator</strong> fan.<br />
Together, they raised their two sons as <strong>Gator</strong>s,<br />
taking them to <strong>Gator</strong> games on Saturdays and<br />
driving home to Dade City after the games.<br />
When the boys were grown, in September of<br />
1990, Joy and Clyde began spending Friday and<br />
Saturday nights of home football game weekends<br />
in Gainesville and hosting large tailgates. They<br />
missed less than 10 weekends in 22 seasons.<br />
When circumstances required Joy to be in<br />
Georgia caring for family, she would meet him in<br />
Gainesville on Saturday.<br />

Greatest memories? The Spurrier Kick, the<br />
Reeves to Alvarez upset of Houston, the great<br />
tailgates, the great friends they made in<br />
Gainesville over the years, and last, but not least,<br />
having their grandchildren, Charles Thomas<br />
and Virginia Anne attend <strong>Gator</strong> games and<br />
become <strong>Gator</strong>s, too.<br />
“In all kinds of weather, we’ll all stick together.”<br />
Recently, while Clyde was undergoing a heart<br />
procedure, his cardiologist, a former <strong>Gator</strong><br />
scholarship athlete, asked him, “What is your<br />
favorite <strong>Gator</strong> game at Florida Field?” Clyde<br />
answered, “Spurrier’s Kick!” The doctor replied<br />
that his was the Auburn game of Bo Jackson’s<br />
Heisman year when because of the dominance<br />
of the <strong>Gator</strong> defense, Jackson quit the game,<br />
uninjured, in the third quarter for the rest of the<br />
game.”<br />
