Otters Return to<br />
<strong>Cannock</strong> Waterways<br />
<strong>Cannock</strong> <strong>Chase</strong> Countryside Service staff have<br />
found evidence of otters us<strong>in</strong>g a water course<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>Cannock</strong>.<br />
Staff will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to monitor their progress on<br />
this tributary <strong>and</strong> are currently discuss<strong>in</strong>g<br />
projects which could contribute to their<br />
further dispersal through the town <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>to the<br />
local nature reserves.<br />
<strong>Cannock</strong> <strong>Chase</strong> Council Countryside Service<br />
manages 19 sites cover<strong>in</strong>g over 260 hectares<br />
(640 acres) of l<strong>and</strong> that caters for <strong>in</strong> excess of<br />
one million visitors a year. The majority of these<br />
sites are of high nature conservation value, with<br />
many of the sites be<strong>in</strong>g recognised for their<br />
national importance for wildlife.<br />

Andy de Comyn, Mike Mellor <strong>and</strong><br />

The National M<strong>in</strong>ers’ Memorial project was the<br />
subject of a piece on BBC Midl<strong>and</strong>s Today<br />
recently when members of <strong>Chase</strong> Arts for<br />
Public Spaces (CHAPS) went along to the<br />
National Memorial Arboretum to be<br />
<strong>in</strong>terviewed about the project <strong>and</strong> how they are<br />
giv<strong>in</strong>g the fundrais<strong>in</strong>g a boost.<br />
The memorial will have 22 bronze panels<br />
depict<strong>in</strong>g the history of coal m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Artist Andy<br />
de Comyn has given his permission for each<br />
panel to be offered for sponsorship <strong>and</strong> each<br />
sponsor will be recognised <strong>in</strong> a book to be<br />
produced giv<strong>in</strong>g details of the memorial as well<br />
as receiv<strong>in</strong>g a plaster cast of their panel.<br />
The opportunity to be part of this long overdue<br />
tribute to the work of all who laboured <strong>in</strong> the<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those who fought <strong>in</strong> both<br />
World Wars, is be<strong>in</strong>g offered at a cost of £2,500<br />

Until the 31st August, local restaurants, pubs<br />
<strong>and</strong> eateries are offer<strong>in</strong>g a 50% discount on<br />
food <strong>and</strong> non-alcoholic dr<strong>in</strong>ks up to the value<br />
of £10 per person, <strong>in</strong> order to help boost the<br />
food <strong>and</strong> beverage <strong>in</strong>dustry follow<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
Covid-19 p<strong>and</strong>emic.<br />
The Government scheme operates on a<br />
Monday, Tuesday <strong>and</strong> Wednesday <strong>and</strong><br />
participants do not need a voucher <strong>in</strong> order to<br />
claim a discount as it will be automatically<br />
applied to the bill.<br />

Ceri was born <strong>in</strong> South Wales <strong>and</strong> worked as a<br />
primary school teacher for many years. She has<br />
a wonderful sense of humour <strong>and</strong> loves music<br />
<strong>and</strong> s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Welsh. Ceri is very proud of her<br />
family <strong>and</strong> given the strange times we are all<br />
fac<strong>in</strong>g it would mean the world to all if her<br />
birthday could be made extra special.<br />

<strong>and</strong> donate items to help create a last<strong>in</strong>g record<br />
of the Covid-19 p<strong>and</strong>emic <strong>in</strong> a new project.<br />
‘Lockdown Memories’ hopes to collect <strong>and</strong><br />
document materials to help retell the story of<br />
Coronavirus <strong>and</strong> how it affected the lives of<br />
people <strong>in</strong> the county.<br />
Staffordshire Archives & Heritage Service is<br />
particularly <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> letters, photographs,<br />
draw<strong>in</strong>gs, pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs or objects relat<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
people’s experiences. The materials will be used<br />
<strong>in</strong> future publications, research projects,<br />
exhibitions or websites.<br />
