Institute of Roofing UpdateContinued from page 18new logo, but ensure a more professionallypresented organisation to the outside world.TrainingA key area for us is training, which is why welaunched a new Associate Course in January2020. It is designed for those considering aprofessional career in roofing, particularly with aneye to moving into or occupying a supervisory ormanagement role. The course has been updatedand moved to a dedicated online learningplatform, designed to offer individuals theopportunity to learn effectively with minimumdisruption to working patterns. The dedicated online learning platform allowsdelegates to access and complete the AssociateCourse’s self-directed study outside of the fiveclassroom days that focus on group learning. We had our first intake of trainees from gutter androof refurbishment specialist, HD Sharman Ltd,and another cohort lined-up for May 2020. Ofcourse, with the lockdown in place, the groupsessions were unable to take place, but we arehoping we can get this back up and running whenit is safe to do so.We also have the first of our additional AssociateCourse trainers on board which will ensure wecan deliver more training, and meet futuredemand across the country.“A number of our onlinelearning courses havealso now beenrecognised as part ofthe NFRC’s RoofCERTprogramme”Available through our website, a number of ouronline learning courses have also now beenrecognised as part of the NFRC’s RoofCERTaccreditation programme, which was a realsuccess for us this year. Independently certifiedby leading bodies, these six courses includeAbrasive Wheels, Fire Safety, Working at Height,“We’ve started workingmore closely with othertraining providers, federations and sectorassociations”Manual Handling, First Aid, Asbestos Awarenessand Fire Marshal.Chartered statusEverything we do as an organisation needs to be inlinewith the goal to becoming Chartered. Achievingthis status will allow us to address the main issueswe face and allocate the available resources wehave in the most time and cost-effective waypossible, so that we strengthen the Institute andprovide a sustainable long-term future. We have made some head-way towards this goalin 2020 in what is a measured, step-by-stepprocess. We have changed the managementstructure of the IoR, modernised our constitutionand rules, and updated our membership criteria. In line with achieving Chartered status, we wantto demonstrate that Fellows of The Institute ofRoofing (IoR) are amongst the most experiencedand knowledgeable professionals in the roofingindustry. Recognised for their skill, knowledge, experience and achievement, they have excelledin roofing and have gone above and beyond whatis normally expected of their specific sector orposition. This will ultimately help to maintain highstandards within our membership and the roofingsector.Industry collaborationWe’ve started working more closely with othertraining providers, federations and sectorassociations, and created the first-stage pathway toprofessional qualifications to help and encourageparticipants to achieve their highest level. We’ve been working with the Roofing IndustryAlliance to allocate funds and support bids fromtraining providers across the sector. This workwill make a real difference to the capacity of ourindustry to meet the skills challenges in thecoming years and leave a lasting legacy. As part of the Roofing and Cladding Task Force, made up of trade associations and federationsfrom across the industry, we’ve contributed to theproduction of a successful open letter to theGovernment calling for the urgent release ofschool maintenance funding within the ConditionImprovement Fund 2020 to 2021. This willprovide ‘shovel ready’ projects to help theindustry recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. As CEO of the IoR, I also contribute to theAdvisory Committee for Roof Safety, helping todevelop guidance on safe working.“Safe working is now akey focus for everyone”Looking positively towards the futureLike many other organisations, the IoR has had totake a step back as a result of the pandemic andassess the potential impact on the Institute inachieving our goals. But we have continued tolook positively towards a brighter future as wemake progress in our ambitions for the benefit ofour members, and the industry.Safe working is now a key focus for everyone, andto help with this we have created a ‘CoronavirusAdvice’ webpage on the IoR website, with accessto various Government and industry body sourcesthat contain the information you need and thatare regularly updated. When this is all over, I hope we can look back andsee that together we got through some of thebiggest challenges in our careers, and came outthe other side stronger and united. We’re lookingpositively towards the future for the roofingindustry, hoping it continues to thrive and takesmore steps towards a professionally recognisedand accredited sector.Contact The IoRwww.instituteofroofing.org@Official_IOR20 TC AUGUST 2020
