A breathablemembrane, especiallyone that is both vapourand air permeable, willgenerally be more expensivethan a non-breathable membrane.This is because breathable options have lessvapour resistance than non-breathable options,so that water vapour can exit freely withoutthe need for separate ventilationabove the roofing insulation.InnovationTo put product innovationinvestment intoperspective, when usingthe example of a typical150sqm roof, this wouldrequire an average of threerolls of underlay. The average costsaving achievable for three rolls of budgetunderlay will only recoup a few hundred poundsat the most, in lots of cases, however, the savingwill be dramatically less than this. In the grandscheme of the whole building project, the value ofspending a fraction more to achieve better resultsat a cost-level of this scale makes sense. Thetime-saving benefits of using premium products,designed with ease-of-installation as well asexceptional performance in mind, also addsfurther value for the installer by reducing the timespent on site.Not all underlay is made tosuit all applications, andfor low pitch roofinggetting the correctunderlay is so important,otherwise the roof willfail. Contractors need to becareful that membraneschosen can cater for the pitch,and choose products developed bymanufacturers, such as Klober, that are suitable.Changing attitudesTo continue to raise roofing standards, it isimportant to carefully consider the roof andremember that the true cost is relative not only tothe price, but also to the performance and howlong it will last. It simply takes a shift in attitudeto realise that a slightly higher investment cantranslate to savings in terms of time and moneylater down the line.
