4 CONTENTS
Welcome to the August 2020 edition of The
Halfway & Westfield Doorsteppa.
We have been overwhelmed with the positive
feedback we’ve received after making the decision
to begin distribution of The Doorsteppa again.
It’s encouraging to know people have missed the
magazine and even through these challenging
times the sense of community is stronger than ever.
We’ve had lots of conversations with local groups
& event planners, and we can ensure you they are
working tirelessly behind the scenes to get things
back up and running normally again in a safe
environment. Please keep an eye out in future
issues of The Doorsteppa to see what’s coming up
near you.
This month we again have several articles and
stories of interest, as well as our regular favourites
ranging from our challenging puzzle pages for both
adults & kids, though to Karen Glazier’s monthly
Tarotscopes.
As we’ve all been spending much more time
indoors I suspect there’s been a lot of ‘spring
cleaning’ going on, and what better way to de-clutter
than to add your items for sale in our monthly
Stuff4Sale classifieds. All the details of how to go
about this can be found on Page 21.
If you contact anyone you have seen in The
Doorsteppa, don’t forget to mention where you
saw their details.
For anyone who would like to advertise, or
promote a community/non-profit event in
September’s issues please phone, email or contact
us on social media. The details are listed below.
Please note the deadline for booking space and/or
confirming your advert this month is Thursday 20th
7 COMMUNITY
Sheffield’s Children’s University are offering over 70 free
activities for children to get involved in this summer. From
20th July to 28th August children will be able sing, dance, get
crafty, and take part in family board games, walks, cooking and
even family yoga.
Activities will be a mixture of live, and online events delivered
via Facebook Live or Zoom, as well as some downloadable or
emailed activities.
Helen Oades, Senior project officer at the Children’s University
said: “This is the sixth year of the Sheffield Children’s
University Festival of Fun and we are so excited! We thought
coronavirus and social distancing would mean we couldn’t go
ahead this year, but thanks to the adaptability of our activity
providers and some clever thinking around the accessibility of
the sessions, we’ve been able to deliver more activities than
ever before.
“We’ve even been able to spread the activities throughout the
whole summer holiday period .Providing these activities
means there’s a go-to place for new activities to keep children
busy, having fun but most importantly, continuing to engage in
high quality learning activities.”
Councillor Jackie Drayton, Cabinet Member for Children,
Young People and Families said:
“The Children’s University and their partners have come up
with some fantastic new and creative ways to help keep
children and their families busy during the holidays.
“With over 70 free activities the Festival of Fun has something
for all families whether they like arts and crafts, outdoor
activities, sports or learning new skills to keep their children
occupied without spending a lot of money.
“I hope as many children and young people as possible take
part in the what I am sure will be an excellent and exciting
summer of fun!”
The Festival of Fun will also include weekly Home Learning
Challenges, themed around the continents of the world and
our place within them. These will supplement the 100+ daily
Home Learning Challenges that the Children’s’ University Team
have developed and published daily since the lockdown began
back in March.
11 GARDENING
Most people find the sound of water relaxing.
The benefits of 'blue space' – the sea, rivers,
lakes, canals and waterfalls, have been studied,
and found to be psychologically restorative;
associated with increased sense of well-being,
lower levels of stress and mental illness, lower
blood pressure, and higher levels of vitamin D.
In short, being by water is good for body and
mind.
Can we replicate this in our gardens?
The presence of water in the garden can
transform a space into a natural haven of calm,
and provide a focal point. Running water in a
garden produces negative ions which are
known to increase serotonin production in the
brain. Serotonin is the chemical that elevates
our mood and relaxes us.
There are many ways to introduce water into a
smaller space, including natural look ponds and
waterfalls, but you don't need a deep
ornamental pond; you can create a small pond
in a container, or create a toddler and
pet-friendly pebble pond, or install a modern
water feature which uses reflective surfaces
that bounce light around, creating movement
and life in the tiniest space.
Any water source will attract a wide range of
wildlife. I have a metallic sphere water feature
on my patio that seems to be a magnet for
dragonflies, which are a delight to watch. A
shallow beached area or pebble pool will
attract bathing birds, and also frogs and toads,
which can shelter, breed, and stay out of sight
of potential predators. You may even attract a
hedgehog or two. They enjoy shallow pools
with sloped edges, so they can drink and bathe
without falling in. A small barrel or container
pond will allow algae to grow which will attract
water invertebrates including snails, pond
skaters and water boatmen.
Kids love water so introducing a pond is a great
way to encourage them to learn about local
wildlife while having fun. Safety is crucial
though; if you have young children it might be
better to wait until they are older before
creating a large pond, as it will require constant
supervision. A pebble pool with a small
fountain effect provides all the sound and fun
of water with none of the depth, and a large
trug or half barrel can be transformed into a
tiny wildlife pond. If you do create a pond,
position it where it can be seen from the house,
make sure the edges slope gently, and fence it
off while the children are young.
Planting around water features is half the fun.
The water forget-me-not, Myosotis scorpioides
is perfect for growing in shallow water or in the
muddy area at the edge of ponds. It has pretty
blue flowers in late spring and attracts newts,
which lay their eggs on the leaves. Irises and
grasses look lovely planted around any water
features and you can even find a tiny lily -
Nymphaea 'Pygmaea Alba' white - for small
ponds, which has the bonus of being heavily
scented.
Water features in a garden are no longer the
preserve of the rich, with acres to spare. Even
if you only have a tiny balcony you can now
enjoy the sight and sound of water in your
outside space.
Happy gardening.
13 TAROTSCOPES
Karen Glazier
www.karenglaziertarot.co.uk
ARIES 21 March - 20 April
Your home requires your attention. Reassessing your
expenditure could bring improvements and allow you to save
money or maybe it’s time to move somewhere more fitting your
current status. Either way you’re eager to get going on new projects.
It’s an exciting and busy time with a ‘feel good’ energy about it.
Some ‘me’ time is important and time spent outdoors benefits mind,
body and spirit. Whether you work or play the choice is yours.
TAURUS 21 April - 21 May
You continue to support emotionally but life should be getting
easier with the demands being placed upon you lessening. Where
others have provided emotional support to you know that this is as
much as they can provide. Only you can resolve your challenges.
Your confidence starts to build as you acknowledge the worst of it
is behind you. Home and family security come under the spotlight
and you need to ensure the future is viable.
GEMINI 22 May - 21 June
It’s time to release the past and that which no longer serves.
You can and will. You’ll have some doubts but be guided by your
intuition and proceed one step at a time. Some situations are best
left to mature before you take action. Some situations require you
seize the moment. You’ll recognise the ones. There’s hard work
to be done so roll your sleeves up and get going. Sooner you start,
sooner you finish.
LIBRA 24 September - 23 October
Overall, you should be feeling content with your lot. If
something remains lacking in the day to day now is the time to
make wishes come true. Don’t be afraid of asking for what you
want. One cycle has ended making room for a new one to begin
and you find yourself in the right place, at the right time, to
capitalise fully. Property features strongly and you can’t wait to
get new projects underway.
SCORPIO 24 October - 22 November
Bit of a bumpy ride at times; this month hold tight and go with
the flow. You have the necessary skills to bring healing to
situations but you may have to stand proud and take no rubbish
from anyone. It’s not about fighting your corner; simply be honest
with those around you and tell folk when enough is enough. Use
your head rather than your heart to get your point across and
others will listen.
SAGITTARIUS 23 November - 21 December
The early stages of something new leaves you feeling either
wholly besotted or completely trapped, depending on the moment
in time. Whilst the heart bonding is wonderful the sense of
isolation brings frustration and, sometimes, anger. All you can do
is dig deep to find your inner strength and courage. Your wisdom
tells you this is a passing phase. Please, be patient. Drain every
drop of joy from the good times. It’ll help you survive.
CANCER 22 June - 23 July
Yes, you can! If you think you can’t, there’s only you thinks it.
The rest of us have every confidence in you. Gather your courage
and self-belief and face whatever challenge you need to overcome
now. A kindly friend offers advice and support. They’ve been there
and done that and actually survived to tell the tale. You will too.
Someone tries to brow beat you. Walk away. You’ll come back
stronger and better than ever.
CAPRICORN 22 December - 20 January
Concentrate on business and career and don’t be distracted.
There’s hard work ahead which needs tackling sooner rather than
later. You may need to re-double your efforts as, although
welcome news is on its way, the results are going to mean even
more activity and work. Get in control of any arguments that break
out. Stand your ground and take no rubbish. You’ll be the one to
put a stop to any sniping. Good Luck!
LEO 24 July - 23 August
Knowledge is power. It’s time to increase your power base with
new learning. This in turn opens up career paths or allows you to
explore completely different options; all with the result of swelling the
coffers and providing further security for the future. Something requires
you to be completely honest with yourself before taking action. If you’re
making compromises then make sure they’re compromises you can
live with. Address delays with patience. Forcing issues backfires.
VIRGO 24 August - 23 September
Who needs nurturing? Is it you or others? Whatever the
answer there’s an abundance of the ‘feel good’ factor surrounding
you now? No situation is about to resolve overnight and a large
degree of patience is required but by taking one step at a time and
not rushing ahead you will get the results you require. There’s the
possibility of funds coming your way. It would be good to invest
but don’t become a skinflint.
AQUARIUS 21 January - 19 February
Family security requires your attention and it’s a case of
looking at what needs to be done in order to survive in the long
term. In career or business consider diversifying or adding to your
skill set to see you better placed. Home may need nothing more
than some DIY and improvements or it could be up sticks and
move. Either way the end of this busy period sees you in a much
stronger position.
PISCES 20 February - 20 March
Some disputes never seem to resolve. This time you can,
and will, sort any issues but do listen to both sides of the argument
and find a solution which is fair to everyone. The listening requires
you use your intuition and ask searching questions as there’s the
potential for you be given only part of the story by some. Don’t let
them lead you down the garden path and prepare for one, or more,
surprises.
15 SPORTS & LEISURE
Many locals will know of Birley Wood Golf Club, will
probably know it use to be 9 holes, will probably know
the supertram changed the course, and will probably
know it’s now a 18 hole course, managed by the
Sheffield City Trust, and is a municipal golf course open
to players of all abilities.
David Cronshaw is a member of Birley, and is also the
organiser of a successful juniors section, David’s own
son Jack plays, and David is always pushing for new
junior members to join the friendly welcoming club,
juniors of all ages are welcome, with a various amount
of both individual and team events to play in, indeed,
the scratch team, or if you prefer the low handicap
team, has over the past 3 years been represented by 3
juniors, and has been very successful, the ‘scratch
team’ recently reached division 2 of the SUGC league
for the first time in the clubs history, and also played in
the Yorkshire championships.
Golf doesn’t have to just be a summer sport, the
course is open 12 months a year and who knows,
maybe your child could be the next Danny Willett, who
won the 2016 US Masters event and began his golfing
journey at Birley Wood.
Junior Green Fees
Juniors are of course, the future of golf, and been a
member of Birley, gives children of all ages, and both
sexes, the chance to integrate with others whilst
hopefully improving their games and competing. The
club offers junior membership (for information on this
contact Dave) and the green fees for playing the course
offer excellent value for money. Practise facilities are
on site and the club hopes in the future to introduce
junior coaching to further the development of junior
golfers.
The course itself, is a fair test of golf, and with the
generous fairways and greens well maintained, is an
enjoyable easy walking experience, with the 9th and
18th holes within easy access of the car park, meaning
18 holes doesn’t always have to be the case, with 9
hole rates also available. Parents are also more than
welcome at the club, to either accompany their
children or get to know other parents who are
interested in their children taking up the game.
17 MONTHLY FOCUS
Friday 17th July to Sunday 9th August.
During lockdown while trying to engage my children in
schoolwork I discovered that there is a society called
Butterfly Conservation. They have organised a nationwide
butterfly count every year since 2010.
Butterflies are good indicators of the health of our
environment because they react very quickly to change in
their environment. This makes them excellent biodiversity
indicators. The survey counts butterflies and day-flying
moths from across the UK, which assists in identifying
trends in species. This helps Butterfly Conservation plan
how to protect butterflies and understand the effect of
climate change.
To take part you need to sit in your garden, a park, a wood
or forest, or your school field for 15 minutes on a bright
sunny day and simply count the butterflies you see. July
and August are when most butterflies are at the adult
stage of their lifecycle, and hopefully there is more
sunshine, so they are more likely to be seen. Count the
maximum number of each species that you can see from
your vantage point at a single time. So if you see three
Peacock butterflies on the same bush at the same time
record it as 3, but if you only see one on a bush at a time
then record it as 1, even if you saw one on several
occasions. This is so that you don’t count the same
butterfly more than once. You can also count while on a
walk. Simply add up the number of each butterfly species
that you see during the 15 minutes.
You can submit separate records for different dates at the
same place, and for different places that you visit during
the counting period. Even if you don’t see any butterflies
or moths your count is still useful.
For men!
In the UK, the shorts season is, well...short, which means
we don't get a lot of practice styling them. Here’s a
helpful guide.
Chino shorts - In a neutral stone or navy they go with
almost everything. They're smart enough to wear with a
short-sleeved shirt to more casual offices but relaxed
enough to wear with t-shirts. Look for a zip fly and
button closure, a just above knee length, minimal pockets
and details, and a mid-weight cotton twill material. Use
a woven belt or a plaited leather belt and wear with
sandals (no socks), or lightweight minimal trainers, deck
shoes or espadrilles with trainer socks if you prefer.
Swim shorts - For maximum versatility (especially when
packing for a holiday) choose swim shorts that look like
normal shorts. Look for a zip fly; length that hits just
above the knee; a solid colour; and fabric that's not too
shiny. Shorts which have a drawstring closure or loud
pattern are fine for swimming but won’t double as normal
shorts. They go with T-shirts, polo shirts or a linen shirt.
Dress them down with flip-flops for the beach but if you
go out for dinner choose shoes that are a little smarter
such as canvas shoes.
Tailored shorts - If your office is hot and you want to be
cool and look smart these are the shorts you need.
Tailored shorts have pleats and tucks that help them sit
neatly and look elegant. Look for the same things you'd
look for in tailored trousers: a good fit, a zip fly with a
flap closure, thin belt loops and a sharp crease or pleat
down the front of the leg. Wear them with crisp short
sleeved shirts, a lightweight blazer, slip on summer
shoes or even brogues (use trainer socks though).
In summary, plain is best and if you only invest in one or
two pairs, chinos are the most versatile.
19 RECIPE
Preparation time: Rise 2-5 days (yes this takes
a little forward preparation but it’s so worth it)
Cooking time: 5 minutes + 35 minutes
Makes: 4 pan-sized pizzas
Tip on to a lightly floured surface. Divide into
four roughly equal portions, shape into balls,
cover and leave for two hours.
While the dough is rising take the cheese and
toppings out of the fridge so that they come to
room temperature.
IMPORTANT - You cannot use a non-stick frying
pan for this recipe. It has to be a cast iron
pan or skillet.
Ingredients
Base
500g Strong white bread flour (But if you have
any Italian 00 flour, it’s is even better).
1½ tsp dried active yeast. I did not have this
throughout lockdown and used rapid dried
yeast instead. I found that the rise time was
quicker (2 days vs 4 days) so this might actually
be a bonus.
1 tsp table salt
1 tsp sugar
Topping
1 400g tin chopped plum tomatoes
1 pack buffalo mozzarella
1 bunch basil
Extra-virgin olive oil, to drizzle
Plain is great but you can add any toppings you
like. We made Pepperoni, ham and sweetcorn,
and ham and pineapple.
Method
Mix the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar then stir in
325ml water to a smooth dough. Cover and
put in the fridge for two to four days.
Remember rapid yeast will activate faster and
may only require two days, or even one if
you’re in more of a hurry.
Empty the tomatoes into a saucepan over a
medium heat and simmer for about 30
minutes, until they form a thick sauce. Season
this to taste with salt and a pinch of sugar.
Once the dough has proved, flatten it into
pizza bases to fit your pan. For reference my
pan has a 26cm base. Heat the cast iron frying
pan or skillet over a moderate-high heat. It’s
ready when you drop a little water into the
base and it instantly hisses and bounces. Preheat
the grill to between moderate and high.
Lightly flour your hands then stretch the
dough into a rough round, keeping the edges a
bit thicker. Cook in the pan until the top starts
to dry out then add some tomato sauce and
mozzarella. Wait a minute before adding any
other toppings. Leave in the pan until base
begins to char. The first time I chickened out
but as I got into the groove the subsequent
pizzas were much better. When you’re happy
with the bottom switch the pan to under the
grill until the cheese bubbles and the edges
brown. Finish with a few basil leaves.
These really are the next best thing to a pizza
from a pizza oven or a proper pizzeria.
25 HEALTH & FITNESS
Reasons to give Badminton a go
At the time of writing gyms, leisure centres
and swimming pools are still closed. But that
doesn't mean that we can't participate in
sport. From 1st June we've been able to play
badminton outside, in the garden or on a
marked court. If you've never played before
now might be the perfect time to give it a try.
It's a great sport for people of all ages and
fitness levels. Those who play regularly are
more mentally alert, with better fitness and
agility levels. It's also a very social game and
what we need right now are low-risk ways to
socialise, because socialising is good for our
mental health.
Played at a high level it can burn up to 450
calories an hour but even a gentle to-and-fro
with the grandkids in the local park will burn
150-200 calories.
Badminton, like tennis requires total
engagement. Players need to predict how an
opponent will play a shot and then plan a
counterattack, which improves mental agility.
There is research to suggest that sports which
involve a combination of both mental and
physical activity offer a protective effect
against dementia.
Badminton requires a lot of movement, in
multiple directions. It requires short sprints,
jumps, stretches, and lunges as players strive
to reach the shuttlecock, which means that
legs, arms, and core muscles are all being
worked. This builds strength and flexibility.
Badminton is a great 'build-up' sport. You can
start as slow as you like, tapping the
shuttlecock over the net, trying to keep a rally
going for as long as possible. As you improve
and become quicker on your feet your shots
will naturally increase in speed and strength
too, and you will almost certainly want to
introduce element of competitiveness. Played
at higher levels the shuttlecock travels at
impressive speeds. Badminton is actually the
fastest racquet sport in the world. Professional
players can smash the shuttle at speeds of
over 200mph! This speed encourages players
to improve co-ordination and core stability.
Again, studies have shown that people with
good core strength and co-ordination are less
likely to suffer falls as they age.
The best way to get started is to find a friend
of similar fitness level and get out and give it a
go. Having a practice partner will make you
both more likely to commit to playing
regularly. It's near impossible to play properly
competitively outside as you are at the mercy
of any breeze and a shuttlecock is 12 times
lighter than a tennis ball. But if the aim is to
improve agility and fitness while socialising
and having fun, don't let that stop you. By the
time sports facilities open back up your
confidence will have grown, and you may be
ready for the next step of joining a badminton
club or regular session. And the beauty of
badminton is that it can be played indoors all
winter, so rain never has to stop play. If you're
a more accomplished badminton player who
is missing their fix you could try crossminton,
which is designed for outdoor play, doesn't
need a court, and combines elements of
badminton, tennis, and squash.
29 BOOKS
Theatre Shoes by Noel Streatfield
The Testaments by Margaret Atwood
Coming 30 years after her best selling The
Handmaid’s Tale, readers certainly had a long
wait for this sequel. The success of the recent
television series has certainly brought in new
fans, anxious to know what happens and
whether Gilead will ever be brought down. Here
Atwood tries to give us some answers.
For those not familiar, the original novel told the
story of America in the not so distant future
where a totalitarian state has been established in
the east of the country after a civil war. Women’s
rights have been taken away from them and are
subjugated in this patriarchal society.
This sequel tells us what happened next from the
perspective of three women: Aunt Lydia, familiar
to readers from the first novel, Agnes, a young
woman living in Gilead, and Daisy, a young
woman living in Canada. Here we learn something
of how Gilead came to be in flash back
accounts from Aunt Lydia, how the outside world
sees Gilead, and the life-changing decisions that
are made for young girls in Gilead by society.
As a fan of the original I found this to be a
gripping read that did not detract from the
power of the 1985 novel. Is it a satisfying ending?
Is everything resolved with the end of Gilead?
That would be telling too much, and I’ll leave it
up to you to make that discovery.
If you have a child who loves to perform –
dancing, singing, acting – then this is the book for
them! Noel Streatfield is best known for her
novel Ballet Shoes and this one is often
overlooked. Whilst it may not have the classic
status that the Ballet Shoes does this is still well
worth reading.
Originally published as Curtain Up this follows
the story of Sorrel, Holly, and Mark. After the
death of their mother, and the disappearance of
their father during whilst serving in the Navy, the
siblings are sent to wartime London to stay with
their grandmother who they have never met.
They find themselves in a world they have never
experienced as they discover that their grandmother
(and their mother) used to be a famous actress.
She seems keen that the children follow in the
family tradition, even though they have no
experience, and they find themselves enrolled at
Madame Fidolia’s Academy of Dancing and Stage
training. Fans of Ballet Shoes will recognise this
as the stage school attended by the Fossil girls.
Sorrel soon discovers a passion for performing,
staring as Ariel in a production of The Tempest.
Mark is determined to join the Navy like his
father - despite being a talented singer – whilst
Holly, shines at dancing. Readers of Ballet Shoes
will notice a similarity with the paths of the Fossil
children, and they do indeed make cameos.
Ultimately this story is about coming to terms
with loss and discovering an extended family,
albeit with the smell of the greasepaint and a
pirouette or two.
