The remodel,contained within what was originally thekitchen and butler’s pantry, demonstrateshow skilled design work makes modernliving feel at home in a structure froman era when spaces functioned verydifferently than they do today.Constructed in 1910, the E.L. PowersHouse is a stunning example of PrairieSchool architecture and was one ofthe first projects undertaken by therenowned partnership of William Purcelland George Elmslie. The original interiorfeatures a spectacular array of leadedglass, terra-cotta tile work, lightingfeaturing aurene shades by Tiffany &Co., and intricately detailed millwork andcasework.As is often the case in older houses,the kitchen had been modified in amanner opposed to its pedigree and wasproblematic from aesthetic, functional,and historic standpoints.By carefully considering the context,details, and overall aesthetic of thehome, the architects addressed thehomeowner’s needs and paid respectfuland honest tribute to the house and thestylistic movement to which it belongs.The kitchen is not a copy or restorationof the original, but a synthesis of modernneeds, historically sensitive details, andPrairie School doctrine.8 2020 Homes by Architects homesbyarchitects.org
