#13RENDERING COURTESY OFQUARTERSAWN DESIGN BUILDMODERN TUDOR SUNROOMMINNEAPOLIS, MNThe homeowners loved their classicTudor home in the Cedar Lake areaof Minneapolis but felt cut off fromthe outdoors, and that the spacesthey had did not invite them out,provide views, or flow well together.Placing this “glass box” sunroom inthe existing side yard helps to createa more private backyard space,while leaving the porch for morepublic gatherings. This four-seasonsunroom is modern, clean, andminimal on the interior, but distinctlyTudor on the outside.These elements worked in concertto help define a new ipe wood wallat the deck that will replace theoutdoor fireplace, grill, and waterfountain features. The new ipe wallacts both as an enclosure for anew grill station and a restrainedbackdrop for the front yard gatheringspace. Landscape features andlights were redesigned to providepicturesque views from the sunroomday and night while maintainingprivacy from the street.Inside, the sunroom is tied into theexisting house in an elegant way,while the connection to the outdoorsis emphasized. Ultimately, a minimaldetailing approach was selectedto highlight the floor-to-ceilingwindows. The opening betweenthe existing house and sunroom isproportioned to frame the Venetianplaster fireplace at the end of thesunroom. Cabinets flank the openingto keep it from feeling oversized, andto provide needed storage space.The majesty of the original homewas enhanced by tying in the newoutdoor spaces and seamlessly—yet distinctively—integratingthe sunroom.
