Calls to ensure projects
in east go to schedule
• By Matt Slaughter
THE NATIONAL Party
candidate gunning for the
Christchurch East seat says the
approach needs to change if
shovel-ready projects in New
Brighton are to be completed on
time.
Central
government
has approved
$7 million to
help complete
nine projects
across New
Brighton.
Lincoln Platt
Lincoln Platt
says if he’s
voted in, he will push for these
projects to be done with the least
bureaucracy possible.
But incumbent Christchurch
East Labour MP Poto
Williams says the current
approach to these projects is
effective and some of them are
already under way. She hopes
they are on track for completion
next year.
Platt said these projects will
benefit the community but
projects in New Brighton have
taken longer than anticipated in
the past.
He said he would ensure these
community groups have direct
communication with central
government so these projects
are completed as quickly as
possible.
the community clubs want, the
Being
a dad
Fathers’ Day is not just
a single day of the year;
it is an every- day event.
Kids need two loving and supportive
parents in their lives – whether the
family all lives under the same roof or
not.
Kidz Need Dadz mission is to
help NZ men be the best
fathers they can. Through
education and support
we help dads to play
an active part in their
kids’ lives. As well as
supporting fathers, we
educate the broader
community about the need
for dads to be involved with
their children.
We can help with parenting,
relationship separation, assistance
with legal advice and mentoring,
information on health and wellbeing
services for men, and events for dads
to meet up.
We are here to help dads with all
sorts of family issues and also to help
new dads with the wonderful changes
that a baby may bring to the family.
Part of this is running a ten module
correspondence course in Discovering
Fatherhood which dads can do via
post or email. (We also run an 8
module Anger Management Course as
well).
International and NZ research
has shown that kids do so
much better behaviourally,
socially, academically and
financially if their dads
are fully involved in their
lives.
Until last year we were
known as Father and
Child Trust, and had been
helping dads since 1996, but
we combined last year with a
similar organization, Kidz Need Dadz,
to give us better nationwide coverage.
All our services are free. We are now
based at the Christchurch Community
House in Tuam Street and can be
contacted on 982 2440 or by email –
‘I’m intimately aware
of the projects’
•From page 1
Williams said she has worked
closely with the community
groups the projects are
being completed for
and central government
to help secure the
funding and ensure
they go smoothly.
“I’m intimately aware
of the projects.
“I maintain email
contact and kind of
progress updates [with
the groups] too,” she
said.
These projects include the
transformation of sports facilities
at Rāwhiti Domain, the
creation of a monarch butterfly
and native bird sanctuary at the
domain, reconfiguring
the 70-year-old
clubrooms at New
Brighton Rugby
Football Club,
upgrades and
earthquake repairs
at South Brighton
Tennis Club, construction
of a new
centre for the South
Brighton Surf Lifesaving
Club, and new fencing,
lighting and security at Te Awa
Haku outrigger canoe club.
Government’s $7 million funding.
The projects the $7
million in Government
funding is going towards
are:
• Transformation of
Rāwhiti Domain’s netball
and tennis courts to create
an all-weather purposemade
floodlit facility.
• Construction of a
softball diamond and
reorientation of rugby
grounds to improve
drainage at Rāwhiti
Domain.
• Reconfiguring the
70-year-old clubrooms
at New Brighton Rugby
Football Club to offer
social and community
events.
• A monarch butterfly
and native bird sanctuary
on Rāwhiti Domain, led
by community group
Guardians of Rāwhiti
to return native species
to the area. It will also
incorporate a 1.7ha
natural woodland play
space and education
centre.
• Upgrades and
earthquake repairs of
courts and clubrooms at
South Brighton Tennis
Club to support its
growing membership.
• A new centre for the
South Brighton Surf
Lifesaving Club, whose
club house was damaged
in the earthquake, to
include a community
hall, kitchen and bar
and a raised patrol room
to improve beachfront
observation.
• A similar revamp of the
New Brighton Surf Bathing
and Lifesaving Club.
• A new meeting place
and cafe, the Bridge Hub
South Brighton, which
will offer social events,
educational courses,
physical recreation and
craft activities, a boost
after the earthquakes
demolished shops to leave
South New Brighton and
Southshore without a focal
point.
• Fencing, lighting and
security at the home of
the Te Awa Haku outrigger
canoe club, part of the
New Brighton Waka
Sports Association.
In Brief
ROAD RECONSTRUCTION
Reconstruction of the kerb and
channel on New Brighton Rd
between the Anzac Drive roundabout
and Barkers Lane, and repairs
between Wattle Drive and
Palmers Rd have now started.
These works are to maintain and
improve the level of service of
the road. The work is expected
to be by completed mid-October.
Meanwhile, entrances to Portman
St and Oak St have now
closed to replace the sewer pipes.
As part of the Woolston Village
upgrade, the underground sewer
network on Ferry Rd is being
renewed, which includes reshaping
and resurfacing the roads.
Portman St will remain closed
until works are completed by late
September, and the Oak St works
are expected by late October.
COURT UPGRADE
A proposal to upgrade the
basketball court at the Bromley
Old School Reserve has been
approved at the latest Linwood-
Central-Heathcote Community
Board meeting. The existing
court will be extended to a fullsized
basketball court with the
addition of a new backboard and
hoop. The extension will help
support demand for basketball
in the city and address a gap for
a full-sized court in Bromley.
Retaining volunteers difficult for groups
• By Bea Gooding
ORGANISATIONS, charities
and community groups are
concerned about the future of
volunteering in Christchurch
following Covid-19.
Some reported a surge of volunteers
post-lockdown as a way
to support their community during
trying times, but retaining
them was a different story.
In an annual report by Volunteering
New Zealand which
examines the voluntary sector,
36.6 per cent of organisations
reported a lack of volunteers as
their single biggest challenge.
New Brighton based charity
NZ Gifts of Love and Strength
offers crucial support to those
experiencing new and traumatic
events, and founder Vicki-Anne
Parker knew the struggle of getting
a few extra hands on deck.
“We get people that say they’ll
turn up, but they don’t,” she said.
Demand at the charity had
picked up recently as a result of
Covid-19 which highlighted the
reality of having a small group of
volunteers.
“We supported over 150 people
during the lockdown as an essential
service, like delivering
food parcels to PTSD victims
who weren’t coping.
“Not one of us get an income
volunteer rates in the region.
from this - but it’s not about the
income, it’s about giving love and
strength.”
In the Volunteering NZ report,
involving 3000 people in the
voluntary sector across the country,
35.8 per cent of respondents
noted an ageing volunteer workforce
as a concern, and a lack of
younger volunteers.
During the pandemic, many
vulnerable volunteers, young and
old, were forced to stop volunteering
in order to protect their
health, which further decreased
work forces.
Volunteering Canterbury strategy
and finance manager Alison
Marshall said many organisations
have had to “re-think” the
way they ran their volunteer
programmes since the lockdown.
“Lockdown, and then the impact
of different levels, has meant
that they have had to, for example,
factor in social distancing,
taking extra precautions where
their regular volunteer team includes
older adults or those who
may be vulnerable,” she said.
“Re-thinking and re-organising
the way you do things is
always challenging, especially
for organisations that are already
often stretched and working
around tight time frames.”
A “spike of interest” in people
wanting to volunteer in Canterbury
since the lockdown was
put down to the increased sense
of community or a change in
circumstances, said Marshall.
But feelings of uncertainty
about the future – as it was
highlighted post-earthquakes
and now, Covid-19 – reflected
people’s readiness to make longterm
commitments, hindering
recruitment rates.
“Many prospective volunteers
are seeking one-off, shorter-term
or episodic volunteering opportunities,”
said Marshall.
“This can be a challenge as
it takes time and resources to
recruit, orientate and train
volunteers; something which is
limited for many.
“Volunteering can provide a
sense of focus and positiveness at
a time of uncertainty. Knowing
that you are making a positive
difference is really good for
people’s mental health.”
ON BOARD: Development Christchurch Ltd is supportive of an idea to make
Roy Stokes Hall more available for the community.
Roy Stokes Hall venue
idea gets support
• By Matt Slaughter
Chris Carrow
CALLS FOR Roy Stokes
Hall to be made available
for more community
groups and events
have received
a promising
response from
Development
Christchurch Ltd.
Chris Carrow,
the director of
the Christchurch
Circus Trust,
which leases the
building off DCL,
is advocating for
this.
He said if DCL approves
the idea, the next challenge
will be finding the between
$300,000 and $1 million he
estimates it could cost to
upgrade the hall to make
it suitable for more community
events.
Pegasus Post reported
last week Carrow wants
DCL to gift the hall to
the community to make
it more open for performances,
concerts and
activities.
The trust is currently the
only group which uses the
hall.
DCL is scoping
out interest
from developers
to transform the
old Central New
Brighton School
site, which the hall
is on, into a housing
development
between Seaview
Rd and Hawke St,
New Brighton.
Its development manager
Cath Carter said DCL is
exploring options for the
hall to remain a fixture
of the site and to be made
available for more community
activities.
“DCL is already exploring
options for making
the Roy Stokes Hall a
multi-use community arts
venue.”
She said its preference is
to “upgrade the hall and
see it held in trust for the
community.”
Carter said funding
would need to be gained
for this upgrade.
Said Carrow: “What we
do know is that both the
city council and DCL have
no money to do any of that
stuff, so it sort of sits in
this place of let’s see what
happens.”
Carrow said last week
charitable trusts such as
the Rata Foundation are
good options for applying
for the money needed.
The future of Roy Stokes
Hall has been up in the
air since Central New
Brighton School closed in
2015.
Last year, DCL sought
feedback and ideas for the
future of old the school site
and found there is a lot of
community support for the
hall.
A feasibility report into
the option of turning it
into a community facility
will be publicly available
soon.
New Brighton
New Brighton... A real ‘eastate’ bargain
and word is getting out
The ‘sizzle’ has started in what the current
market trends are showing and forecasts
are predicting for the New Brighton area
says, Milena Bartlett from Harcourts New
Brighton.
She points out that real estate stats show
the median sale price of a property in New
Brighton has gone up from $357,500 in
January of this year to $369,000 in June.
This figure reflects an increase of a
median price in NB by 5.4% compared
to the same period last year and is an
increase of 23.4% compared to three years
ago!
Considering that a median sale price
for Christchurch region in June 2020
was $469,000 in comparison, this makes
New Brighton a very affordable part of
Christchurch, if not the whole of New
Zealand, considering value for money that
is on offer.
One of the handicaps to the slower value
increases has been the gradual change
from older batch style houses to purpose
built and that change will accelerate,
meaning builders will find more work out
this way as time goes on.
St Clair beach in Dunedin has a
medium house price of over $700k, and
Mt Maunganui is just under a million,
Oriental Bay is up around $1.8 million,
and pointless buying anywhere near an
Auckland beach with Herne Bay well over
$2 million dollars.
Having been to all these hotspots,
can say we have the best bargains since
Amazon listed its first shares at $18 bucks
each.
Incredible as it sounds, for a sea-side
suburb, only within this city in New
Zealand, and very few overseas cities will
you find these sorts of entry level house
prices in a stunning coastal area.
In addition, New Brighton is destined
to becoming the premier recreational
destination in the city. As one agent
has described it: “affordable and rich in
recreational and lifestyle amenities around
a beach, river and estuary. Sometimes it is
easier to list with photos of the beach than
the house.”
One of the most noticeable trends came
from the Covid 19 lock-downers fretting
in claustrophobic city suburbia, observing
it was business (within the rules) as usual
out coastal way, and soon there was a
steady stream of traffic to join the many
local cyclists and walkers re-discovering
“our” freedom and
beauty.
That certainly
sowed a few seeds in
the minds of CHCH
westies.
The next decade
will witness a
level of change
incomprehensible
to many, and one
of those will be the $800 million (plus)
ecological Otakaro spine connection to
the city, already in start-up mode.
An agent who lives locally says “we
have seen spike in activity and a lot of
new-comers to the area from other parts
of the city and NZ, since the opening of
the Shirley Boys & Avonside Girls High
Schools, the hot pools and the general
media focus on the area”.
As a Kiwi born overseas, Harcourts
sales consultant Milena Bartlett says the
diversity of environment on peoples back
door, from Bottle Lake in the North to the
dune landscape of Southshore is a “joy of
living here every day.”
This increasingly positive perception
is attracting families into the area and
buying much of the rental stock leaving
both a current chronic shortage of places
to let, and houses to buy. “It will be
interesting to see effects of wage subsidy
end and an increase in jobless,” but Ms
Bartlett anticipates the desire to move out
this way will continue.
For some comparison (though these
are January 2020 figures) reflecting the
median value and annual change, however
I believe the Southshore and South New
Brighton are also now slowly trending
upwards.
Scarborough $1.62m (+5.7%)
Christchurch central $474,950 (+1.2%)
Southshore $459,450 (-1.1%)
Burwood $446,050 (+1.8%)
South New Brighton $384,300 (-0.4%)
HEALTH & AWARENESS
PEGASUS POST
Joint pain: Do I have arthritis or
could it be mainly my muscles?
The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham
sees clients with a range of symptoms but
many of their middle-aged and senior clients
visit complaining of pain in one of their joints.
Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests
that a major part of the pain could be due
to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis.
“Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason
for the pain may be the muscles around
the joint,” she explains. The images show
how a muscle knot (the crosses) in a back
muscle can give hip pain (aches and pain
are the red areas in the drawings), a knot
in a muscle on the back of the shoulder
blade can give a deep pain in the front of
the shoulder and a muscle knot all the way
near the groin can give an ache in the knee
(especially at night in bed).
Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year
old client with severe arthritis who walked
with a stick, told her, “I will end up in
a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight
through my right leg due to pain in my hip
and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she
was walking with her stick but without the
severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was
one of the factors that made her muscles
spasm but the other was that older people
move less and the flexed position the hip
is in when we sit is particularly bad for
the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that
although the client was 89 and could have
been “given up on” or told to live with the
pain, she made a difference to her health
and wellbeing.
The same lack of movement can be the
reason for your knee pain or your shoulder
pain and the same few treatments could
make a huge difference for you.
At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques
(massage and triggerpoint deactivation
techniques) are used to release the muscles.
The client also gets a home exercise
program designed to mobilize and stretch
the joint, strengthen the important core
muscles and increase general strength and
SHOULDER
PAIN
KNEE PAIN
(the crosses are the areas of the muscle spasms, the red areas is where the pain is felt)
balance. They teach a movement sequence
that stretches the joint in all directions
whilst the client is able to lie safely on their
bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients.
In many cases having the muscles
released and being taught how to maintain
it, is enough to stay on top of the problem.
HIP PAIN
If severe arthritis is the underlying cause,
some maintenance therapy may be
necessary, but that is often more affordable
and, for older patients, better tolerated
than surgery. After only one treatment you
should know that it will work for you. Call
and only pay $50 on that treament.
Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. The Blue Line Bus stops in front of the
door and there is ample parking. To enquire about joint pain treatment, phone 377-2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz
SENIOR LIVING
Natural vision support
Bilberry and marigold are two natural
herbs with a long history in supporting the
health of the eyes and good vision.
During World War 2, British bomber
pilots reported improved night vision after a
nightly dose of bilberry jam before missions.
Subsequent research suggested that bilberry
extract may improve microcirculation
within the eye, with the most significant
effects found in people with impaired visual
acuity.
Bilberries contain powerful antioxidant
compounds called anthocyanins that may
play a major role in supporting eye health
and even in improving the vision.
One of the main causes of degenerative
eye diseases such as macular degeneration
relates to an increase in free radical activity
that damages healthy cells in the eyes. The
anthocyanins from the bilberry help reduce
this free radical damage that could lead to
serious eye disease.
Bilberry has also been shown to improve
oxygen and blood delivery to the eye,
important factors for maintaining eye
health.
Bilberry is commonly used to support
night vision and alleviate tired eyes,
eye strain and dry eyes. It is considered
beneficial for most eye conditions, including
cataracts, disorders of the retina, and to
prevent eye problems, especially in people
with diabetes or high blood pressure.
The retina is a thin layer of tissue at
the back of the eye that transforms light
information into neural signals for the brain
to see images.
The retina is very fragile and can be
damaged by bright light, especially blue
light. Computer monitors, cellphones,
electronic notebooks, televisions, LED and
fluorescent lighting all emit significant
amounts of blue light and may have long
term effects on the retina.
The carotenoid lutein, as found in marigold
flowers, is concentrated in the macula, the
functional centre of the retina. The macula
gives us the ability to see detail and provides
the best colour vision.
Lutein appears to be vital in protecting the
macula from blue light damage. Multiple
studies have shown that people with eye
diseases have much lower levels of lutein
in their eyes and that increasing intake
of lutein can reduce the risk of macular
degeneration, the leading cause of blindness
in older people.
One study of people in India, where
cataracts are a common problem found that
those with the highest blood levels of lutein
had a 41% lower risk of developing cataracts,
compared to those with the lowest levels.
Natural VisioN
support
Marshall’s Herbal VISION MANAGER contains
two high potency herbal extracts of Bilberry
& Marigold. These are both well known to
support normal eye function & promote
healthy vision. Bilberry contains powerful
antioxidants called anthocyanins that may
play a major role in supporting the health of
delicate eye tissues. Marigold is a source of
the carotenoid lutein. This compound has
been shown in multiple studies to be a vital
nutrient in eye health. Optimum levels of
lutein appear to offer significant protection
against serious eye disorders.
HERBAL VISION
MANAGER SUPPORTS:
• Eye health, repair &
maintenance
• Sharp clear vision
• Night vision & colour
perception
• Eye strain relief
• Dry eyes
• Blurry vision
• Protection from blue light
damage from computer
BENEFIT: Community groups
in the city’s east that organise
events such as the New Brighton
Duke Festival of Surfing, will soon
benefit from the city council’s
Strengthening Communities Fund.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
Community groups
benefit from $356,000
FOR THE last few weeks
it has been a joy to be part
of the Waitai/Coastal-
Burwood Community
Board.
THis because we
have been involved in
distributing $356,000 to
a whole raft of fantastic
local Coastal-Burwood
community groups
from Spencerville to
Aranui, from Burwood
to Queenspark and
from Southshore to New
Brighton to Waimari
Beach.
This Strengthening
Communities fund looks
to do just that – strengthen
communities. It supports
locally based organisations
whose projects contribute
to the strengthening of
community well-being in
the Christchurch city area.
This Strengthening
Communities fund is
the city council’s way of
recognising that not all
the important work of the
Council is done in town.
It recognises there are lots
of groups that do really important
work in the heart
of their communities and
that these – now more
than ever in the Covid environment
– need practical
financial support. These
groups are what hold much
of our society together.
Usually staffed by either
volunteers or part-time
workers they often run on
a shoe-string budget.
From toy libraries and
play centres, to elder
groups and friendship
clubs, from sports clubs
to garden trusts to Residents
Associations there
is an opportunity for
every group to get some
assistance. Many
take up the offer and make
an application. Some of
the groups run iconic local
events New Brighton
Duke festival of Surfing
while others like the New
Brighton project not only
run the popular Saturday
Market but are involved
in many aspects of life in
New Brighton.
Other groups like the
Aranui Community Trust
run or access a diverse
range of services and are
right at the heart of our
From the board
Kelly Barber, chair
Waitai/Coastal-Burwood Community Board
community making a huge
difference in the lives of
our people. It’s a privilege
for our board to support
a small part of the life
changing work they do.
But the distribution of
this fund is certainly not a
free-for-all lolly scramble.
It has a process. Each community
organisation needs
to have a proper structure
in place, a clear intention
as to how they are going
to use their money and be
accountable for that spend.
The city council provides
assistance with this as well.
Our board’s support staff
does an amazing job wrangling
all the applicants and
assisting them through the
process.
So next time you pay
your rates, I’m sure you’ll
be pleased to know that
some of that comes directly
back to your local
groups that help sustain
your community at the
grass roots.
