U.S. Coast Guard<br />
� Deployed to the Middle East with U.S. Navy Maritime <strong>Security</strong> Squadrons to support<br />
Operation Iraqi Freedom po<strong>in</strong>t defense and harbor security operations <strong>in</strong> Kuwait.<br />
Secured Our Borders<br />
� Contributed to the disruption <strong>of</strong> 123 illicit drug movements; 42 events <strong>in</strong>volved the<br />
Coast Guard’s Airborne Use <strong>of</strong> Force (AUF) capability deployed aboard Coast Guard<br />
cutters and U.S. Naval warships. Coast Guard AUF equipped aircraft and precision<br />
marksmen deployed on U.S. Naval warships assisted <strong>in</strong> confiscat<strong>in</strong>g 24% <strong>of</strong> the total<br />
coca<strong>in</strong>e removed <strong>in</strong> <strong>FY</strong> 2009.<br />
� Conducted 62 <strong>in</strong>ternational port security<br />
revisits/reassessments <strong>in</strong> <strong>FY</strong> 2009. Ensured foreign<br />
nation compliance with port and ship facility<br />
protocols to <strong>in</strong>crease the security <strong>of</strong> commerce<br />
bound for the United States.<br />
� Deployed Coast Guard LEDETs aboard U.S. Navy<br />
(USN) and partner nation warships; removed over<br />
187,737 lbs <strong>of</strong> coca<strong>in</strong>e, 4,035 lbs <strong>of</strong> marijuana,<br />
deta<strong>in</strong>ed 128 suspected smugglers, and seized 16<br />
vessels. LEDETs aboard USN and partner<br />
nation warships accounted for over 50% <strong>of</strong> total<br />
<strong>FY</strong> 2009 coca<strong>in</strong>e removals.<br />
� Supported the U.S. Extended Cont<strong>in</strong>ental Shelf Task Force by conduct<strong>in</strong>g seafloor<br />
mapp<strong>in</strong>g and data collection missions to help def<strong>in</strong>e the limits <strong>of</strong> the outer cont<strong>in</strong>ental<br />
shelf.<br />
� Detected 112 illegal <strong>in</strong>cursions by foreign fish<strong>in</strong>g vessels <strong>in</strong>to the U.S. Exclusive<br />
Economic Zone (EEZ).<br />
� Participated <strong>in</strong> two Arctic West Patrols<br />
support<strong>in</strong>g various science missions, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
studies on polar bears and methane gas, and<br />
enforc<strong>in</strong>g treaties protect<strong>in</strong>g U.S. fisheries.<br />
Improved Resilience <strong>of</strong> the Maritime Transportation<br />
System (MTS)<br />
� Conducted icebreak<strong>in</strong>g operations to prevent icerelated<br />
flood<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Fairport, Ohio and Grand<br />
Haven, Michigan, responded to w<strong>in</strong>ter flood<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> Fargo, North Dakota, and assisted <strong>in</strong> rescu<strong>in</strong>g<br />
over 100 people stranded on an ice floe <strong>in</strong> the<br />
Great Lakes.<br />
� Updated the Nation’s 43 Area Maritime <strong>Security</strong><br />
Plans. Revisions <strong>in</strong>corporated lessons learned from<br />
recent hurricanes to enhance MTS recovery.<br />
