HYDROPOWER INDUSTRY GUIDE 2020/21
Hydropower Sector Information
Station 7: Advanced Data Analysis
Here, VERBUND was able to count on the close
cooperation with numerous Austrian and international
research and technology partners right
from the start. “Our goal is to evaluate all conceivable
possibilities of digital applications for
hydropower and to put the most promising technologies
to the test in a pilot power plant,” Karl
Heinz Gruber, Managing Director of VERBUND
Hydro Power GmbH, stated during the first live
demonstration of the hydropower plant 4.0. This
approach is unique in the hydropower industry
and therefore attracts a lot of international attention.
However, as digital technologies are changing
rapidly there are many challenges, which make
the application so highly demanding. Networked
platform solutions in hydroelectric power
plants have to combine previously isolated data
and information systems. Data should be available
locally and centrally at the push of a button
across all areas and enable rapid analyses. But,
as Karl Heinz Gruber made clear: “Digital technologies
will not displace our employees in the
power plants, but rather support them in their
daily work in the form of a reliable assistance
system.”
VGB/VERBUND Expert Event 2020 –
As web conference
Enhanced digital controls can contribute to improving
the performance of hydropower fleets,
plants and equipment by reducing costs and
optimizing asset management. Digital control
systems can also play a major role in improving
decision-making and supporting operations to
work more efficiently.
The VGB/VERBUND expert event scheduled on
10/12 November 2020 has been carried out
fully digital. The VGB Expert Event “Digitalization
in Hydropower 2020 – Implemented innovative
digital measures, products and tools“ has
been organized as a web conference and the
opportunity for a special business speed dating.
The web conference offered participants a comprehensive
overview of digitalization in hydropower
dealing mainly with the results of newly
developed and implemented digital techniques
in our webinar.
Web conference
More than 15 lecturers provided again a comprehensive
overview of digitalization in hydro
power dealing mainly with the results of newly
developed and implemented innovative digital
measures, products and tools.
The sessions are:
• Session 1: Innovative tools
• Session 2: Advanced data analytics
• Session 3: Performance optimization
• Session 4: Practical applications of
predictive maintenance
• Session 5: Environmental performance
and geo-information systems
The web conference brought together experts
from leading operator and manufacturer companies
as well as related stakeholders to discuss
challenges and opportunities for the operation of
hydro power fleets accruing from digital transformation.
To get in touch with business experts from operators,
manufacturers and consultants participants
had the possibility to take part in a special business
speed dating.
