CHECKING a bid on Trade Me 

and looking at an app to 

see when the baby needs 

feeding are some of the reasons 

drivers have used when caught 

on their cellphones. 

During a three hour period 

in Rolleston last week, 48 

drivers were stopped and 

issued an infringement notice, 

Senior Sergeant Dean Harker 

said. 

The drivers will pay an $80 fine 

and receive 20 demerit points. 

Another driver said: “I wasn’t 

using my phone I was checking 

Facebook,” when stopped and 

questioned by police.

seen talking on their cellphone 

while approaching a set of

served as a tune-up for his stint at

since the newspaper revealed the 

potential plan late last month.

The annual Rakaia Salmon Run 

multi-sport event will go ahead 

next month. The Rakaia Lions 

Club and volunteer committee 

are organising the event,

17. Member Jo Burrows said the 

committee held a meeting last 

week to discuss the continuation 

of the event in light of Covid-19.

DISTRICT PLAN REVIEW 

The proposed new district plan is 

expected to be notified for public 

consultation next month. The 

plan is essentially the district’s 

rule book on how land can be 

used and developed. A district 

council spokesman said the 

consultation period will last 

eight weeks. A review is being 

undertaken to make sure the 

plan is still fit for purpose and up 

to date. All councils are required 

to review their plan every 10 

years.

Dickson talked to us about the 

Halswell Huritini Stormwater 

Management Plan. 

It was a reminder to all that 

what mixes with water in our 

zone tends to end up in Te 

Waihora/Lake Ellesmere. 

The Huritini/Halswell River is 

a microcosm of New Zealand’s 

water issues as it runs through 

both urban and rural areas. 

Along the way, it picks up zinc 

from the rooftops of Halswell, 

sediment from the hills to the 

east, copper from the brake pads 

of the cars that drive nearby 

roads, and nitrate that runs 

from the fields it flows past. 

The river flows downstream, 

passing Ahuriri Lagoon, where 

work is now complete on a constructed 

wetland. The thousands 

of aquatic plants in the wetland 

will act as a filter, removing

mauri of Te Waihora while 

maintaining the prosperous 

land-based economy and 

thriving communities. 

Paul’s presentation served to 

remind us that caring for our 

waterways is the responsibility 

of all, rural and urban.

our co-chair arrangement. 

Since Megan Hands became 

an Environment Canterbury 

councillor last year, the second 

co-chair role has been vacant. 

Committee members voted 

to make the co-chairs myself 

and Fiona McDonald. I want 

to thank my fellow committee 

members for the faith they’ve 

placed in me and welcome Fiona 

as my co-chair.

district council, ECan and the 

Christchurch City Council to 

review how our zone committee 

functions. 

This is because over more 

than 10 years of zone committee 

work, our role has evolved. 

The Selwyn Waihora zone 

committee was originally 

formed to provide advice on 

implementing the Canterbury 

Water Management Strategy in 

the region. 

We helped write and implement 

Plan Change 1, introducing 

strict nutrient loss limits. 

Now that the zone implementation 

programme and its addendum 

have been put in place, 

one of our goals is to monitor 

progress and ensure we begin to 

see results.

“He did some really good 

things, but he put a few balls out

Defibrillator, headsets 

stolen from rugby club

A POTENTIALLY life-saving 

defibrillator and other items 

including two headsets 

were stolen from Lincoln 

Rugby Club’s clubrooms 

at the weekend. 

Mark Tweedy, 

president of the club’s 

golden oldies team 

(Lincoln Lizards) said 

the defibrillator was only 

purchased about a month 

ago. 

Tweedy said in spite of the 

rugby season nearly being over, 

some mainly junior teams are 

still playing and players and 

supporters at games will not 

have access to a defibrillator if 

it is needed until the new one 

arrives. 

“If something happens to a 

player or a supporter or a parent, 

we haven’t got anything there to 

help them.”

about her commitment 

to the job and passion 

for medicine 

When did you start 

volunteering for St John? 

It would have been about eight 

years ago now. We moved out to 

Selwyn after the earthquake and 

I started about six months to a 

year after that. 

Was your house badly 

damaged in the earthquake? 

Yes, we weren’t allowed to 

go back to our house it was so 

badly damaged. We were in 

Redcliffs at the time. 

The garage collapsed down 

on to the house. We just picked 

the kids up from school that day 

and left Christchurch. 

We were lucky, we had a bach 

at Whitecliffs which had clothes, 

food and water so we lived 

out there for about a year and 

a half. 

Why did you decide to join St 

John? 

I have always been very 

interested in medical things. 

Before I had kids I worked in a 

laboratory doing microbiology. I 

then retrained as a radiographer 

so I’ve worked in oncology with 

that. When I moved, I wanted 

to get involved in the Selwyn 

community so I thought it would 

just be a good thing to do. I

have always been interested in 

volunteering and I figured it 

would be nice to get involved 

and get to know other people in 

the community. 

Do you have a call-out you 

attended that is the most 

memorable? 

There was one incident I remember 

where a lady had a baby 

in the back of the ambulance. 

We had the midwife with us 

in the back so there wasn’t too 

much to do but it was a nice job. 

Some of them are not very nice 

as you can imagine. Everybody 

was really happy and the mother 

and baby were fine so that was 

really cool to experience. 

How many hours a week do 

you volunteer for? 

It varies quite a lot. Most of the 

shifts are 12 hour shifts. I probably 

do three or four a week so it 

is around 40 hours. Sometimes 

more, sometimes less depending 

on what else I’ve got on. We 

are all volunteers out here in 

Darfield. I’m not the only person 

who does it, I’m just one of many. 

That is quite an important thing 

to mention, I couldn’t do it if it 

wasn’t for other people that did it 

as well. They are all good people 

and care about the community. 

Do you have a day job? 

I just work part-time about 

one or two days a week in town 

at Lowe Environmental Impact 

doing administration stuff in 

the office. I am quite lucky I’m 

around a lot in the day time to 

attend callouts. Some of the 

volunteers don’t really get to 

have that. 

What was it like when you 

found out you were recognised 

as a ‘Covid hero’? 

It was lovely, it was really nice 

to get nominated. I thought it 

was nice of the Selwyn District 

Council, and Selwyn Times, to 

do something like that and acknowledge 

the people that have 

gone above and beyond. It was 

really nice, I did feel a little bit 

embarrassed as I’m not the only 

one who does it but it was very 

nice to be acknowledged, yes.

You were nominated for your 

work during the lockdown, what 

was that like? 

We were reasonably quiet, I 

guess, over lockdown. Most of 

the call-outs were for medical 

things because people were not 

out and about or on the roads 

and things like that. When we 

did go to someone’s house we did 

have to stand quite far away from 

them. We had to ask them all of 

the Covid-19 questions before we 

could get close and check them 

over. 

I kept a change of clothes at the 

station and would have a shower, 

take my uniform home in a separate 

bag and wash it as soon as I 

got home. We also had to wear 

gloves and masks. Driving into 

town was great though because 

there was no traffic on the road 

so it was much quicker. There 

were a lot of things we had to 

do to be safe. We had to be very 

conscious of bringing it back to 

our houses. 

How long have you lived in 

Selwyn for? 

We moved out after the earthquake 

so it’s been about nine 

years now. 

What do you like about living 

here? 

Oh well, everything really. My

husband Rob and I both like the 

fact that it is a lot quieter. I can’t 

really explain it. It’s a really nice

It’s just what we like now. We 

have a nice home, nice neighbours, 

have made really good 

friends and joined lots of different 

groups. Everyone is just lovely 

and very inclusive. 

Can you tell me about your 

family? 

Rob and I have four children. 

The oldest is 29 and the youngest 

is 24. so they all don’t live 

at home anymore. The oldest is 

living in London, i’m not too sure 

when we will be able to see her 

again so that’s not very nice but 

she’s coping okay over there. The 

next oldest is a boy who is living 

down in Alexander with his partner. 

Then we have another boy 

who lives in Christchurch and 

our youngest is in her last year 

of university in Christchurch. 

They are all great kids we can’t 

complain. 

How did you and Rob meet? 

It’s a bit of a cliche really. 

We met at a pub, I was with a 

friend and he was with a friend 

and our two friends knew each 

other. We met and became really 

good friends first and then 

decided we quite liked each other. 

Apart from volunteering, 

what do you like to do in your 

spare time? 

Rob and I are both keen 

cyclists, we go biking fairly 

frequently around the district, 

we like cycling in the hills. We 

quite like wine. We go to the 

beach, walk our dog Jack who is 

part dalmatian and part labrador, 

we do lots of things. We are very 

busy people and are hardly ever 

home. 

Do you have a favourite wine? 

I quite like red wine, a shiraz is 

my favourite.

Hatch Early Learning Centre is a beautiful

preschool which opened in Prebbleton in 

February this year with a license for 60 children.

Selwyn drivers caught on cellphones

OVER THE last few weeks 

Selwyn police have been 

concentrating on drivers using 

mobile phones while driving. 

During a two-hour period 

last week in Rolleston, 28 drivers 

were stopped and issued an 

infringement notice for using 

a mobile phone while driving. 

The fine for this is $80 plus 20 

demerit points. 

Using a mobile phone does not 

only involve making or receiving 

phone calls, it includes using 

any app or device on your phone 

while driving such as Google 

maps, Snapchat, Facebook etc. 

While stationary at the traffic 

lights you are still in control of 

your vehicle so it is an offence to 

use your cellphone. 

Mobile phone use while 

driving is a recognised cause of 

distraction to drivers and is prohibited 

under the Land transport 

Act. 

A mobile phone is a source 

of distraction for drivers. 

Distraction arises not only from 

the physical manipulation of the 

phone, but also from the mental 

effort and divided attention 

associated with using the phone. 

While police needs the public’s 

help to keep the roads safe, we 

have a responsibility to protect 

our communities from risky 

driving behaviour, including 

distracted driving. 

Research shows drivers using 

mobile phones are up to four 

times more likely to be involved 

in a crash, depending on their 

experience and how they are 

interacting with the device. This

Research has shown that driving 

while talking on a hand-held 

mobile can be as dangerous as 

driving at the legal/blood/alcohol 

limit – and it can increase 

the risk of being involved in 

a crash by 400 per cent. Even 

more dangerous than talking is 

texting and emailing. 

One driver who was observed 

talking on their cellphone while 

approaching a set of traffic lights 

and then stopping was so busy 

and distracted that they missed 

the lights turning to green on 

two cycles of the traffic lights 

and was unaware of the built up 

traffic behind them tooting at 

them to go on the green light.

A COMMUNITY-LED nitrate 

testing day for private water well 

owners drew in a big crowd. 

The Selwyn Waihora Water 

Improvement Mission group, 

with help from the New Zealand 

Federation of Freshwater 

Anglers, held the testing session 

at the Springston South Soldiers 

Memorial Hall. 

Group member Mike Glover 

said 120 people visited and 

nearly 90 tests were taken. 

The tests were $5 each which is 

considerably less than a lab test. 

“Some people, when we told 

them their nitrate level was close 

to the government maximum 

acceptable value of 11.3mg/l, 

had no idea what it meant,” said 

Glover. 

Some people were visibly upset 

when told of their high levels, he 

said. 

Environment Canterbury chief 

scientist Tim Davie said they 

support the initiative as it is good 

for raising public awareness. 

Glover said the group thinks 

ECan should be providing free 

nitrate testing. 

“While it is appealing to offer 

free testing to private well owners 

in reality there is no such 

thing as free testing, someone 

has to pay,’’ Davie said.

Even though a change is 

unlikely, readers continue 

to react to Rolleston New 

World becoming a Pak’N 

Save 

Liz Goslin – I love the idea 

of a Pak’N Save as long as the 

supermarket food prices and 

quality of meats such as grass 

fed meats for example, and food 

items are cheaper than New 

World and Countdown. Bring on 

the change. 

Jayantha Gonsalkorale – I 

think the plan to remove New 

World is a terrible idea. While 

Pak’N Save is also part of the 

Foodstuffs group, it fails to deliver 

the service levels offered by 

New World. What is sold compared 

to New World is inferior 

especially when it comes to fresh 

vegetables and meats. 

Pak’N Save also sells a very 

narrow range of brands and 

lacks choice. I have shopped at 

Pak’N Save and although I pay 

marginally less than New World, 

the fresh produce I buy from 

New World results in less waste 

and they keep longer. 

Develop the existing New 

World in Rolleston, make it even 

more competitive and enhance 

the customer experience like the 

New World in Tawa, Wellington.

very difficult to support such a 

drastic change to the local area. 

Currently, New World sits unobtrusively 

within the shopping 

complex. 

The need to demolish New 

World to accommodate Pak’N 

Save could only be for one reason 

and that is to replace the current 

building with a three possibly 

four-storey yellow development 

which would back onto the new 

Rolleston Town Centre. 

I would submit this would not 

fit into the council’s endeavour 

to make the town centre a place 

of relaxation meeting place etc 

with a backdrop of a three-storey 

yellow building with a stick 

figure attached. 

Should Pak’N Save wish to 

have an establishment in Rolleston 

I suggest the other side of the 

railway tracks would be more 

appropriate.

high, Pak’N Save has so many 

items and cheaper. 

l would like Pak’N Save to 

come to Rolleston.

manner. 

This all contributes to a positive 

shopping experience for me. 

I haven’t had the same positive 

experience at Pak’N Save 

supermarkets to date and avoid 

shopping at them. 

If the New World in Rolleston 

is replaced with a Pak’N Save 

then I will no longer shop there.

Nine-year-old’s 

predator-free bid 


THERE IS a stoat in 

Prebbleton that should be 

worried. Very worried. 

Because nine-year-old 

Oliver McLaren is on a 

mission to rid Prebbleton 

of pests. 

Oliver has always been 

passionate about conservation. 

After being donated 

a rap trap he started what 

he is calling Predator 

Free Prebbleton with the 

help of his mother Rachel 

McLaren. 

She said they have 

caught hedgehogs, mice 

and rats so far. 

“We have heard there is 

a stoat in the reserve so we 

are trying to catch at the 

moment,” she said. 

A community workshop 

was planned earlier this 

month for people to come 

along and get more information 

on trapping but 

this had to be postponed 

due to Covid-19.

would go and check it 

every day to see if he 

caught a rat. 

The family’s property 

backs on to the Prebbleton 

Nature Park so Oliver decided 

that would be a good 

place to lay some traps. 

“He contacted the 

Halswell group and asked 

if he could buy some more 

traps and they actually 

gave him four more. 

“So we started off with 

five traps in the park and 

started catching heaps 

then.”

district council.’’ 

With the donations, 

Oliver had enough wood to 

make 60 traps. 

A local man also made a 

stencil for him to be able to 

spray paint Predator Free 

Prebbleton on them. 

The group is registered 

with trap.nz so if people 

have their own traps they 

can link up on the website 

and log what they catch.

The Selwyn Youth Council has organised a Clean up the Liffey event as part of this year’s Keep 

New Zealand Beautiful clean up week, which is running around the country this week. 

Youth Council chairperson Liv Duder says the Clean up the Liffey event on Sunday 13 September, 

is part of a fortnight of volunteering that the Youth Council will engage in, helping out at foodbanks 

and tree planting. 

The Liffey project was one she was particularly keen on, Liv says. 

“I go to Lincoln High School and I see the Liffey regularly and it’s often got rubbish in it. We 

wanted to do our part, to help our community and make it beautiful—because it is beautiful.” 

There has been a rise in volunteering and a sense of community during and after the COVID-19 

pandemic lockdown, which the Youth Council is hoping to build on as people have seen the 

positives of volunteering and supporting their community, Liv says. 

Getting young people engaged in volunteering early is important, she says, and will hopefully 

inspire them for a lifetime of giving back. 

“I think it’s nice to do things to make our community look better and to support local things and 

people. I think it can help take your mind off things and help you feel better. Hopefully, it will help 

them take pride in where they live.” 

Everyone is invited, but volunteers will need to RSVP at Selwyn.govt.nz/Liffeycleanup to meet 

COVID-19 Alert Level 2 requirements. The clean up will be held from 10.30am–12pm, meeting at 

Down By the Liffey Gallery (1 James Street). Gloves and bags will be provided! 

A moment to celebrate who we are 

Joining a moment with a million other people will be part of 

celebrations of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori in Selwyn next week. 

Selwyn Libraries will be taking part in Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori, or the 

Māori Language Moment, where people are encouraged to speak, 

sing, listen to and celebrate te reo at 12pm on Monday 14 September. 

The moment, organised by the Māori Language Commission, is 

aiming to get one million Kiwis to take part. People can sign up, or 

find ideas for how to take part at tuku.reomaori.co.nz. 

Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori will be among a series of activities at 

Selwyn Libraries that you can join in marking the week, starting on 

Monday 14 September. 

Nau mai, haere mai, ki te whakanui i Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. He 

pūrākau kei te haere! (Help us celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori with 

a storytime!) 

Each library will have an activity sheet with basic Māori activities 

available to pick up and will be hosting poi making workshops and 

a storytime with waiata (songs) and some of our favourite stories 

in te reo. 

Staff will also be running the poi workshop in a Selwyn kura (school) 

and collaborating with the school kapa haka group. 

Libraries Programme Delivery Coodinator Bridie Frost says it’s good 

to be a part of a valuable and fun annual celebration. 

“Te reo Māori is an official language of New Zealand, so Te Wiki o Te 

Reo Māori is a chance to support part of who we are, and celebrate 

something unique to our country. The Selwyn Libraries team is also 

always looking for ways we can celebrate our culturally diverse 

community with initiatives like CultureFest, Diwali and many more, 

and Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori is an important part of that.”

Rural water and water race users surveyed on 

long-term use 

The Council is asking rural water and water race users about their future use and water needs. 

As part of long-term planning we’re surveying residents on the five rural water schemes to get a better 

understanding of how much water they use. We’re also looking to find out from water race users their 

desire to keep using their water race and willingness to pay for this service. 

Rural water supply and water race users will get letters over this coming week with further information 

about the surveys, which will help the Council in its planning about long-term water use through the 

Long-Term Plan. 

Rural water users will also be given an opportunity to say whether they would like to reduce or increase 

the number of water units they receive. 

Users who indicate they would like to reduce the number of units they hold will be contacted by the 

Council staff to explain the process. 

Foster Park in bloom 

Thousands of daffodils are bringing a bright splash of colour to 

Foster Park. 

The wildflower daffodil garden of 20,000 daffodils planted by 

volunteers and Council staff at the park is blooming. People are 

encouraged to enjoy the flowers while they last, but please don’t 

pick them. 

EV charging station construction begins 

Construction of new electric charging stations is due to begin next week in Arthur’s Pass and Castle 

Hill. The new stations are due to be completed by the end of this month, depending on the weather. 

Two new parks will be built on the roadside near the Castle Hill Community Hall and tennis court 

area and two carparks will be converted in the Council owned car park opposite the Department of 

Conservation offices on State Highway 73. Access to the carpark will be maintained, but four parks 

will be unavailable during construction. These are the first of six Council sites across the district where 

Orion and ChargeNet will be installing charging stations.

Art exhibition to 

showcase local talent 

An exciting weekend of art and creativity 

scheduled for later this month is expected 

to attract plenty of interest from across the 

Selwyn district. 

In conjunction with Langdales Vineyard 

and Winery, local artist Lara Pomroy of 

Art West will be holding an art exhibition 

entitled ‘A Local Tale’. It will include her 

works and that of seven other exhibitors. 

The exhibitors are: 

• Lauren Carmichael, who has created 

a short series of works inspired by the 

2020 lockdown period during which a 

page appeared on Facebook called ‘view 

from my window’. This saw views from all

The event will also include a one-off 

workshop conducted by Sandy Sharp of 

Miss Lily Flowers. Flower Wrangling 101 

begins at 10.30am on Friday, September 

18 with a cocktail/mocktail making 

demonstration and tasting, hosted by 

Lauren Carmichael of Langdale. 

This will be followed by the 90-minute 

workshop, when Sandy will share some 

basic floristry skills, provide lots of helpful 

hints and guide participants through the 

process of creating a seasonal bouquet to 

take home. Cost $120, registration via 

the Miss Lily Flowers Facebook page. 

Following the workshop, participants 

will enjoy a vineyard lunch created 

exclusively for them by Langdale, 

after which they can while away the 

afternoon enjoying the Langdale 

gardens and enjoying the art exhibition 

from Art West Studio. 

On Saturday, September 19, Lara Pomroy 

will be holding an introductory art class at 

her Art West studio. All materials will be

Keeping your diesel vehicle in good 

condition protects its engine life while 

avoiding expensive repairs and ensuring 

economic motoring. 

Phil Thompson at Diesel Fix in 

Rolleston says it is possible to keep an 

eye on the state of your diesel vehicle by 

carrying out some simple checks. This 

is also a good idea before committing to 

buying a used diesel vehicle. 

Phil says if there is a build-up of 

soot around the exhaust, this usually 

translates to a problem with the engine 

combustion or exhaust. 

Look to see if any check-lights on the 

dashboard, remain on when the vehicle 

is started. 

Next examine the colour of the oil on 

the dipstick. If white or milky, it is likely 

there is a problem in the internal engine. 

Look underneath the vehicle and around 

the engine compartment itself, for signs 

of oil or coolant leaks. All are clues of an 

unhealthy engine. The radiator’s coolant 

should be clean with not much ‘gunk’ 

in it. If the coolant is contaminated, the 

vehicle has issues. 

“Diesel engines can be notoriously 

bad starters in chilly weather,” advises 

Phil who is a qualified Automotive and 

Diesel Fuel Injection Engineer. 

He recommends trying to start the 

vehicle when the engine is cold. A long 

delay can be indicative of a number of 

issues. It will be wise to get a diagnosis 

of the problem, before a more serious 

issue results and you have an expensive 

repair on your hands. 

Also check the exhaust fumes while 

the car is running. A light black colour 

is good. If it is too thick or a whitish 

colour, the engine has a problem. 

This might be due to the fuel/air ratio 

being out of balance because of faulty 

injectors, low compressions, incorrect 

timing or incomplete combustion. 

If looking to buy or concerned about 

your own diesel vehicle, take it for a 

test drive. Consider the way it handles, 

whether there are any vibrations and 

how the steering feels. Also weigh up 

how the engine performs. Is there is 

any hesitation in the power? Listen for 

undue engine noise and look to see if 

excessive smoke is spouting from the 

exhaust.

Building blocks to a new home 

As Cantabrians continue to move forward, when building a new home, 

here’s a reminder to pay attention to some of the fine details... 

Anyone intending to build a new home should have the 

builder’s contract checked out by an experienced lawyer. 

If you want to compare building companies, it’s important 

to get down to finer details such as how many power points 

there are per room, the type of windows you are having or 

which paint finishes are included. 

Questions to ask builders include: 

• Do you have a completion guarantee and how does it 

work? 

• Is there a loss of deposit guarantee? 

• Is the company a Registered Master Builder? 

• How are the deposit and 

progress payments 

administered? 

• Are they held in a 

solicitor’s trust fund? 

• What are the exact specs? 

• Are the prices fixed? 

• What is excluded from the build? 

Do your homework before you decide on a building company 

and you will have a less stressful time once the building 

process starts.

THERE ARE an estimated 

80,000 species of millipedes 

worldwide. In New Zealand 

the millipede fauna is poorly 

known as their identification 

can be challenging. However, 

approximately 60 species have 

been described from New 

Zealand, while about 100 species 

require scientific description. 

Twelve exotic millipede species 

are common in urban gardens 

and urban forests of New 

Zealand, having been introduced 

from Europe. 

Millipedes are distinguished 

from centipedes by having 

two rather than one pair of 

legs on most body segments. 

Their antennae consist of 6-8 

segments and contain various 

sensory organs, including 

receptors for smell, taste, touch, 

and temperature. New Zealand 

millipede species are usually 

2-5cm in length and are brown, 

grey or black in colour. 

Most millipedes are detritivores 

and fungivores, feeding on 

decaying vegetation, dead wood, 

and similar materials. 

Occasionally, millipedes 

may feed on living plant tissue 

including roots, tubers and fallen 

fruit, and can become pests in 

high densities. They are very 

important in soil ecosystems, 

breaking dead wood and plant 

debris into smaller pieces, preprocessing 

the organic material 

for further decomposition 

by fungi, bacteria, and 

microinvertebrates. 

Millipedes lack a waxy layer on 

their cuticle, and will desiccate 

if exposed to dry air, so prefer 

damp, protected habitats. 

They have separate sexes and 

after mating, female millipedes 

lay hundreds of eggs, often 

building a protective nest. 

The slow-moving and nonbiting 

millipedes discourage 

predators by rolling into a ball or 

tight spiral, exposing only their 

tough exoskeleton. 


Citrus love full sun 

EVERY GARDEN deserves a 

citrus tree. 

In all but the coldest 

districts, citrus trees feature in 

backyards. They’re incredible 

survivors, but will perform better 

and bear wonderful crops if 

they’re well cared for. 

Where to grow citrus 

Plenty of sun 

Citrus trees need to be in full sun. 

If you’re short of sunny spots in 

the garden, grow citrus in pots that 

can be moved to take advantage of 

changing patterns of sunlight. 

Although citrus are traditionally 

grown in terracotta, these pots 

can be heavy (and expensive!). 

There is a perfect solution 

– Tuscan pots are lightweight, 

surprisingly inexpensive and have 

that wonderful Mediterranean 

look that goes so well with citrus. 

Tuscan pots come in a range 

of sizes. The large 50cm size is 

big enough to grow almost any 

type of citrus tree happily for 

many years. 

Good drainage 

In the garden citrus must have 

good drainage. In heavy clay soils 

it’s best to put some extra effort 

into preparation. 

Before planting, raise the level 

of the bed as much as possible, 

dig in some coarse sand and 

plenty of old organic matter 

(compost, aged manure or 

commercial soil improver). 

Feeding citrus 

Before planting 

Mix some organic pellets into the 

soil before planting. It won’t cause 

root burn, even if it accidentally 

contacts some of the roots. 

Established citrus 

Feed with citrus food at least 

twice a year. 

Citrus are very greedy plants 

and, because of the extra 

demands imposed by their 

heavy crop, it’s always best to 

use a specifically formulated food. 

Occasionally switch to organic 

pellets to improve the levels of 

microbial activity in the soil.
