idea gathers momentum

A PUSH is being made for 

an adult playground to be 

installed in the area in a bid to 

tackle feelings of loneliness and 

isolation. 

The Spreydon-Cashmere 

Community Board has listed exploring 

the provision of an adult 

playground as one of its priorities 

in its 2020-2022 plan. 

Board chairwoman Karolin 

Potter said she has been keen 

on the idea of establishing a 

playground primarily for adults 

somewhere within the community 

for a long time. 

Adult playgrounds have proven 

to be popular overseas in countries 

such as England, Germany, 

Canada, China and Spain with 

Barcelona having more than 300 

senior playground installations. 

A study from the University 

of California, Los Angeles stated 

that when recreational areas 

are made attractive for adults, 

particularly the elderly, they can 

reduce the prevalence of loneliness, 

provide opportunities for 

inter-generational interaction 

and create a sense of belonging.

happens a lot in New Zealand, 

and a dwindling peer group, they 

would say to themselves when 

they wake up: ‘I am going to the 

playground.’ They might go there 

to exercise but would probably 

end up socialising as well which 

would do them good,” she said. 

Potter said she envisaged the 

playground including all sorts of 

things such as a climbing wall, 

concrete table tennis table and 

exercise equipment.

Community library opens 

A STRIKING new “edition” of 

a dedicated community library 

has opened in Opawa. 

Following nearly 10 years 

without a permanent base, 

the volunteer-run Opawa 

Public Library finally has a 

home, sharing the new city 

council-funded, purposebuilt 

building with the local 

children’s library. 

The public library was operating 

out of the former children’s 

library space following

Brizzell said that it is “exciting 

after nine-and-a-half years 

of not having an operating 

library on that original site to 

finally have a beautiful new, 

light, bright and warm building.” 

She said that contractors 

have successfully navigated the 

Covid-19-enforced lockdown, 

“working hard” to deliver the 

new library. 

“The library has always 

been an important part of 

the Opawa community,” said 

Brizzell. 

“It’s a social hub, where 

people meet friends, make new 

friends, have some really great 

discussions and some gossip, 

plan social occasions, ask for 

directions to or some advice 

and, oh yes, get a good book or 

two or DVD out. 

“The new building is a 

real boost for locals who have 

seen considerable change 

in our community, partly 

because of the earthquakes 

and also the loss of key 

services – such as the post 

office, doctor and chemist – 

from the area.” 

The new library offers books 

and DVDs, along with jigsaw 

puzzles for adults. 

While there is a small charge 

for the adult books and the 

DVDs, the books for children 

are free to borrow. 

The building also houses 

a small community meeting 

room, which is available for 

hire. 

The volunteer-run 

library is open on Monday, 

Wednesday and Friday from 

2pm to 4pm and 6.30pm to 

8pm. It is also open on Tuesday 

from 2pm to 4pm and on 

Thursday and Saturday from 

10am to noon and 2pm to 

4pm. 

Under Covid-19 alert level

physical distancing in the

Cycleway network gaps could be filled

WORK COULD be done to fill 

“critical gaps” in the cycleway 

network as part of a plan to 

encourage people out of cars 

and into alternative modes of 

transport. 

The Greater Christchurch 

Partnership’s mode shift plan, a 

collaboration between councils 

across the region, outlines a 

range of short-term initiatives 

to encourage people away from 

single-occupancy vehicle use and 

onto bikes and public transport 

in a bid to reduce congestion and 

pollution. 

This includes spending $68 

million on enhancing the 

existing cycleway network. 

This would see $46 million 

of the money go towards the 

network’s two major cycle routes, 

the South Express and Nor’West 

Arc. 

The South Express cycleway 

connects the central city 

with Templeton, travelling 

through Hornby, Sockburn, 

Middleton, Riccarton and Addington. 

Work is currently under 

way on the first section of the 

Nor’West Arc cycleway between 

Cashmere Rd and Annex Rd 

and also another section further 

along Hansons Lane, Suva St 

The revolution

Condition of footpaths raised

THE CITY council is one of the 

largest employers in the South 

Island and has many employees 

who have expertise, knowledge 

and history in their jobs which 

are often highly specialised. 

They are public servants 

and contrary to the cliche, the 

service to the public aspect of 

the job is icing on their cake as 

it is on mine, it is the public that 

make the work often the best job 

you can imagine ever doing. 

This last couple of weeks we 

have had several people presenting 

to the board about the work 

that we do in our ward. Two 

were senior staff talking about 

roads, footpaths, potholes and 

repairs. The bane of all our lives. 

We discussed various kinds of 

road seal, that which is usually 

used in suburban roads and 

that used on high use roads, 

the balance of expenditure and 

duration, the science of potholes 

and their repairs, the budget and 

its limitations.

many of them that provide passage 

for cars across the footpath 

but make walking, passage for 

wheelchairs and people who 

depend on walkers very difficult. 

Why do cars need so much 

care and attention in their 2m 

traverse of a footpath at the expense 

of walkers and prams and 

people in wheelchairs? 

The conversation was interesting 

and worthwhile and 

gave us food for thought for our 

upcoming submissions on the 

Long Term Plan. 

It was made even more fascinating 

the next day at the public 

forum of our board meeting 

when a resident with considerable 

expertise presented to us on 

roads, potholes and cycleways. 

And, of course, he had a sometimes 

different view on their 

design, methodology and materials 

from that of staff the night 

before and was as interesting and 

informative as they had been.

only ask as many questions as 

we can, read as much as we can, 

understand and make the best 

decisions within out limited 

jurisdiction that we can. 

Above all be grateful that we 

have staff who do their very best 

in their jobs and a community 

that cares and talks to us with 

the best interests of their fellow 

residents at heart.

with community

“Feelings of social isolation 

and loneliness amongst the older 

population is a really serious issue 

and it is overlooked so often. 

This idea of Kaorlin’s is doing 

something to specifically address 

it,” he said. 

The community board plans to 

engage with the community to 

see if there is a desire for an adult 

playground in the area before 

undertaking a feasibility study on 

the matter and pursuing a business 

case. 

If the project is found to be 

viable it will then advocate for 

funding to be assigned to it from 

the city council’s Long Term Plan 

budget. This could prove to be a 

difficult task as the city council 

looks to streamline its budget in 

response to the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Potter was unsure how much 

an adult playground would cost 

to install but thought the cost 

would be outweighed by the “joy 

it would bring to the community.”

Could you tell me a bit 

about what Dress for 

Success is and how it 

came to be what it is 

today? 

Dress for Success is 

a global not-for-profit 

organisation that 

empowers women. 

Dress for Christchurch 

has been operating in 

Canterbury for 17 years. 

Our local vision is: 

Empowering women – 

providing women in need 

within our community 

with the guidance, 

support, tools and 

confidence to pursue their 

employment goals and 

shape their own financial 

future. 

Since starting operations 

in 1997, Dress for Success 

Worldwide has expanded 

to almost 150 cities in 25 

countries and has helped 

more than 1.2 million 

women work towards selfsufficiency. 

Each affiliate focuses 

its programmes on their 

own community needs. In 

Christchurch we have the 

Dressing Programme, and 

Careers Centre which runs 

job search and retention 

seminars, resilience 

programmes and one on 

one careers coaching and 

job search. 

What issues are women 

currently facing while 

entering the workforce, 

and why? 

The women we support 

are so varied including 

those on low or no income, 

challenging domestic 

situation, mental health 

challenges, never worked 

before, immigrants, young 

women, transgender 

women and women reentering 

life after prison. 

One of the biggest issues 

is a lack of confidence and 

self-esteem, which is one 

of our main focuses and 

the aim of the Dressing 

Programme is to help 

this. It takes a very short 

time for women to feel 

less confident about 

their abilities, often

for women, finding 

part-time employment 

and employers who 

have flexible working 

arrangements. One of the 

plus sides of Covid-19 is 

the ability to work from a 

home base. 

Why is an organisation 

like this important in 

Christchurch? 

We are the only 

organisation in Canterbury 

supporting women in need 

in this way, the Dressing 

Programme particularly is 

unique to our organisation. 

We see over 400 women 

per annum so we know 

there is a real need in the 

community. The women 

are referred by more than 

40 referral organisations 

across Canterbury. 

We also support women 

in “one-off” situations like 

attending a court case or 

other significant events. 

Last year we dressed a 

mother of four in an outfit 

for her graduation. 

How has Dress for 

Success impacted women 

in order for them to 

thrive in the workplace 

and beyond? 

Women who come 

for a dressing or careers 

appointment can vary 

in age from 16-years-old 

to 70-years-old, we work 

to support and empower 

women by providing 

not only clothing for job 

search preparation but 

also other tools and skills 

needed to succeed. We 

provide ongoing support 

once in employment 

through our “Women in 

Work”’ retention seminars 

and mentoring.

make-up, good quality 

clothing, shoes handbags 

and jewellery.
