Council explores
management of
coastal hazards
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Coastal hazards are under the spotlight in the
Hurunui District.
Meetings will be held with six coastal
communities to exchange information and
views on hazards.
Council chief executive Hamish Dobbie says
it will be achance for the council to share what
it learned about coastal hazards and to ask the
communities what they know, what they want to
know, and the approach they would like to take.
“A plan for the future can then begin.”
Mr Dobbie says some information has been
put together with consultants to help explore
potential scenarios.
‘‘What is important now is to work closely with
our coastal communities to find out their
concerns, needs and wishes.”
The evening meetings for invited residents
will take place at Amberley Beach, Leithfeld
Beach, Gore Bay, Motunau, and Claverley Flat/
Conway Flat.
“There is no knowledge like local knowledge,
when it comes to working through this puzzle of
coastal hazards,” Mr Dobbie says.
He says there is no one solution, but it is
important to look at the options. “At the moment
we are engaging with our communities on our
shared knowledge of coastal hazards, so we can
work out what to do next. It’s really important
every voice is heard.”
The council has the legal responsibility to
manage risks from natural hazards. It says
community input is crucial and it will work at
the pace of those who live on the coast. “There
is no hurry for this. We are working on amultigenerational
plan. We want to do this once and
do it right.”
After initial meetings, there will be followup
conversations with coastal communities.
