BUSINESS SUPPLEMENTFUTURE RAIL PLANS FORBANGKOK, PATTAYA AND BEYONDThe Mass Rapid Transit Authority ofThailand (MRTA) has set out plans to expandrail lines in Bangkok and has also announcedfuture schemes in other cities.In Bangkok, the Brown Line will be extendedfrom Khae Rai to Yaek Lam Saliand the Purple Line will run from Tao Poonto Rat Burana. These two projects will becompleted in 2026 and 2027 respectively.The announcement was made at the MR-TA’s 28thanniversary event.These new projects follow news that thetender process was opened for the operationof the Orange Line that connects ThailandCultural Centre with Bang Khun Non.More lines in Bangkok are also expectedto be planned and built going forward.MRTA governor Pakapong Sirikantaramaswas quotedas saying,"The MRTA aims at elevating the lives ofcity dwellers, providing more convenience,by developing the transit areas of various[modes of public] transportation.”In other major cities, new rail lines arebeing planned. Nakhon Ratchasima will seeits Green Line get the go ahead, which willconnect the Save One Market to the BaanNari Swat Protection and Occupational DevelopmentCentre. Completion is expectedto be in 2025.By 2028, in the northern city of ChiangMai, residents there will be able to travel onthe "Chiang Mai Light Rail Transit” systemlinking Nakornping Hospital to Mae Hiais.To the south, Phuket will see a longawaited monorail connecting Phuket InternationalAirport to the Tha Chalong Intersection.This has long been an extendedtaxi or bus ride and so it will be a welcomeaddition to the resort island. Completion isexpected by 2026.Meanwhile, under what is expected to bea public-private partnership (PPP) model,Pattaya is gearing up to build its own monoraillinking the upcoming high-speed rail(HSR) station to Pattaya’s downtown areas.Construction is expected to commence in2023 and the line should be operational by2027. Currently the plans are at the publichearing stage and will thenawait cabinet approvalfollowing environmentalimpact assessments.Eighty percent of Pattaya'sresidentswerein favor ofthe monorail,whichwill comeat a costo fapproximately 26 billion baht.Initial plans of the routing, which maybe subject to change, show the 9km longmonorail starting at the HSR Station to theeast of Sukhumvit Road and then traversingPattaya North Road with 4 stops beforeturning left into Pattaya Sai Song road. Anadditional 6 stops are expected as the lineextends in a north/south direction, includingPattaya North Road station, Pattaya CentralRoad station, Pattaya South Road stationand Thap Phraya Intersection beforethe monorail terminates at Bali Hai Pier.Motor WayPATTAYAHSR StationPattaya deputy mayor Manote Nongyai wasquoted as saying, "For the future developmentof Pattaya, it is necessary to reduce the useof private cars while moving towards publictransport in the form of an electric rail systemto distribute wealth, promote tourism and helpthe industrial sector.”The Pattaya monorail project is designed toconnect Pattaya with the government's alreadywell-established Eastern EconomicCorridor (EEC) project.High Tower Co., Ltd.
