In order to focus on a specific human experiencewithin my future world, I triedto lay out ome of my assumptions of thecontext which need to exist in orderto enable this experience to take place.These insights were based on conversationswith experts and future exhibit wehad designed in part one.A) One of the things that became clearin conversations with the experts wasthat is is usually a specific type of personwho take part in clinical trials. Thisis party because trials present a lot ofrisk - there are many variables and itis difficult for a patient to understandthe terms of a trial unless they have ahigh enough level of medical literacy toread the papers. This means that a lot ofthe patients who end up not trials arethose who are able and willing to do alot of research, which often end up beingthose with ore social mobility and highersocioeconomic status. In order for theaccessibility and diversity of clinical trialsto improve, clinical research needs to beintegrated into routine practice, which itcurrently rarely is.B) Thought this project I chose to focuson the lifestyle and environmental factorswhich might enable precision medicineto take place in the future; but thebiggest breakthroughs in precision medicineso far have been those concerninggenomic medicine, especially advancesin genomic sequencing. Though genomicsequencing is moving evermore intomainstream medicine and cancer care,it will likely play a far larger role in thefuture.C) One of the defining features of precisionmedicine stems from the ideathat each patient should be treated asan individual. This is a notion being discussedmore and more frequently in theNHS, especially in Scotland where governmenthas set targets for the deliveryof patient-centred care. NHS Scotland iscurrently trialling a patient portal whichallows patients to access their own medicalhistory. In the future, patient’s will begiven more responsibility to understandand manage their own healthcare, helpingto break down the paternalistic ideaof healthcare which we have currently.53
