INTRODUCTION
The purpose of Gaston Day School’s Crisis Response
Policy and Procedure Guidelines is to provide
reasonable direction to all members of the
GDS community on how basic functions within our
operating system during school hours will be managed
during this crisis/pandemic. We recognize
that the following guidelines will not provide management
of, or procedures for, every aspect of
campus life. In addition to addressing the daily
functions of campus activity, these guidelines offer
practical approaches and solutions to concerns
around health and safety issues, as they apply to
the Covid-19 virus and any other associated virus
linked to Covid-19 (Kawasaki and pediatric multisystem
inflammatory syndrome) for the reopening
of Gaston Day School. Gaston Day School is also
prepared to return to a partial or full-scaled virtual
environment as a last option.
Please understand that this policy is a temporary
policy and only addresses those operational and
procedural functions which are necessary for reopening
and operating campus with the potential
for change to a virtual environment during this crisis
event.
This policy and guidelines will not replace all procedures
outlined within our faculty handbook or
our Emergency Policies and Procedure Guidelines.
However, some elements of this document will supersede
existing policies and guidelines within the
faculty handbook. Areas impacted by this document
are, but not limited to, traffic circulation,
drop-off, pick-up, gate operation times, building
access, etc. Areas that are not impacted by this
document are, but limited to, faculty activities requiring
prior approval, faculty planned absences,
faculty forms, emergency closings, etc.
Our obligation is, and always will remain, the safety
of our GDS family while administering the best education
possible under given circumstances. To
accomplish that primary task, we have elected to
follow, as closely and as reasonably as possible, the
guidelines and mandates provided by as many
recognized health and safety experts as possible.
Although not inclusive of all, since they may expand
and/or retract as more information becomes
available, the guidelines and recommendations we
are using to maintain a safe campus environment
are as follows;
Local health professionals, state health professionals,
federal health professionals, CDC, Johns Hopkins
COVID-19 Information & Updates, School Safety
& Security Alert, NC Public Schools Tool-Kit, and
NC Guidebook For Reopening Public Schools.
The implementation of “best practices”, guidelines
and mandates as they pertain to our GDS environment
has culminated into the following
procedures and guidelines.
Our obligation is, and always
will remain, the safety of our
GDS family while administering
the best education possible
under given circumstances.
CAMPUS ETIQUETTE
Our efforts to open school require adherence to practices that
will allow us to provide quality education and to foster positive
engagement and a thriving campus life, while adhering to best
health practices for campus life. To meet our goals, we ask that
all employees, students, parents and visitors participate in the
established guidelines provided within this document.
We ask that you pay attention to campus
signage, physical distancing and hygiene
efforts such as frequent washing of hands,
reducing the spread of a cough or sneezing
by covering your mouth with your inner
arm to the elbow or use tissue, and
when visiting, we ask that you be mindful
of your own wellness. If you are not feeling
well, suspect that you may be ill, or think
you may have come in contact with
someone that has tested for COVID-19,
please avoid coming to campus.
Although we enjoy frequent drop-ins for
just saying hello, we ask that all visits be
limited to absolute needs. Again, our goal
is not only to open and resume a nearnormal
campus life, but to remain open
for the entire school year. Your help in accomplishing
this task coincides with all of
us following the guidelines and proper social
etiquette outlined in this document.
Students are not to open any door for any
known or unknown non-student without
a badge on Gaston Day School’s campus.
If you are the one knocking on a door,
please comply and go to the front office.
Do not get mad at them, yell at them or
give them the evil eye to open the door
for you, even if you know that student and
they know you. Instead, we ask that you
show organizational citizenship and encourage
your child and any others you
converse with to comply with best practices
& safety smarts. Tell them you appreciate
them keeping Gaston Day safe by
not opening a door and directing you to
the front office as the preferred point of
entry. Thank you for being a part of the
Gaston Day School family.
SAFETY & SECURITY
School Morning Operation Hours
Gaston Day has established operational hours for when campus entry in the morning is
allowed. The hours were established in an effort to control building access through
thermal temperature check-in stations.
Teachers: May enter campus at 7:00 a.m.
Students: May enter campus at 7:30 a.m.
Until otherwise notified, these hours are inflexible. We understand the need and/or habits
for some that would prefer earlier operating hours. However, we must continue to follow
health and safety guidelines that allow for a daily proper set-up of equipment and personnel
at each check-in station. Therefore, we must be reasonable with respect to the time required
by those charged with equipment set-up at each check-in location.
Check-in locations are as follows:
Main building front lobby - All
lower school teachers to include substitutes
and part-time employees assigned
to lower school, Preschool - 4th-grade students,
administrator/faculty with offices in
the lower school pod, visitors, parents,
cleaning staff, and vendors should use this
entrance for check-in.
PWK side entrance - All upper
school teachers to include substitutes and
part-time employees assigned to the PKW
or the circle area of the main building, 9th
- 12th graders, administrators/faculty and
staff assigned to the PKW or the circle of
the main building should use this entrance
for check-in.
Campus Gates:
Henry Center lower level entrance
into the foyer between the cafeteria and
the gymnasium - All middle school teachers,
including 8th-grade teachers, 5th -
8th grade students, administrators/faculty
to include substitutes and part-time employees
assigned to the Henry Center, cafeteria
employees, and coaches should use
this entrance.
Both the center gate and the west end gate (side closest to Union Rd.) will be open from 7:30
a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Teachers and faculty can use their badges or Pin # to gain access prior to 7:30.
After 8:30 a.m. badges and/or ID/Pin #’s will be required to gain campus access. Those without a
badge or Pin # can use the call button to request campus access. Gates will be open for early
school pick up from 12:00 p.m. until 12:45 p.m. and will reopen from 2:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. for
student pick-up.
Traffic Circulation / Drop-Off & Pick-Up
Morning Parental, Sibling, or Guardian Drop-Off for grades
Preschool through 4th:
Continue to use the same campus entry methods from our previous school
year. Please keep in mind gate operation hours. There will be no early drop-off
for students requiring child care this coming year. PS- 4th-grade morning
drop off will begin at 7:30 a.m. Lower school students who arrive late or who must be picked
-up early for appointments will go to the main building entrance for check-in and checkout.
Families with children/students in multiple divisions (lower and/or middle and/or upper
schools) should plan to drop students off in each designated campus check-in area.
What has changed: Parents should
be prepared to assist their child by exiting their
vehicles without the assistance of any GDS staff.
Staff will be present to direct students to the right
school entry door. Once inside, all students will
pass through a thermal temperature check-in station
before being directed to their designated
classroom areas. Any student that has a temperature
reading of 100.4 degrees or above will be isolated
and re-checked. If their temperature remains
elevated, that student will be taken to a separate,
safe holding area for reunification with their parent
or parent approved responsible person. Staff
assisting in the recheck process will be required to
wear face masks and gloves. Face shields and
gowns are optional unless there is a need to monitor
someone for longer than 10 minutes. Please
refer to our Health & Wellness section for our
“return to campus” policy.
Those that have face masks will be allowed to continue
using the mask they have. Those without
face masks will be provided with one. Preschool - K
will be encouraged to wear masks when entering
the building for temperature checks.
1st - 4th
graders will be required to wear face masks while
entering any campus building. We understand
that many students at that age may experience
difficulties wearing a mask throughout the entire
day. Gaston Day will continue to exercise patience
and work with those students to develop the comfort
needed to do so.
The use of face masks or face shields by teachers
and staff assigned to PS - 4th grade will be guided
by a number of circumstances as directed by the
Head of Lower school. Recommendations used for
these procedures are from: https://www.cdc.gov/
coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/schoolschildcare/index.html
The afternoon pick-up will be similar to our pick-up
process as in the past. Parents, siblings and guardians
should line up in the afternoon dual parking/
waiting lanes as in the past. However, each parent,
sibling, or guardian will be responsible for the
placement of their child in their vehicle without
the assistance of staff. Staff will still direct each
child to the appropriate vehicle as before and will
be motioned when it is their turn to leave. While
waiting, please remember to turn off your vehicle,
as it may be difficult for some students wearing
masks to breathe with your vehicle's exhaust system.
Staff assigned to the pick-up process will be required
to wear their face mask at any time they are
within 6 feet of any person.
Morning Parental, Sibling and Guardian Drop-Off for grades
5th through 8th:
What has changed:
You will now enter campus
and drive to the Henry Center. The dropoff
will take place in front of the glass
doors leading into the foyer between the
cafeteria and Gymnasium. (Please keep in
mind gate operation hours. We will not allow
early entry for child drop-off or pickup.)
This process will take more time than
in the past since only one vehicle at a time
will be allowed for student passengers to
enter or exit, unless otherwise directed by
GDS staff. As soon as that vehicle leaves,
the next vehicle may pull up and release
its student passengers. Families with children/students
in multiple divisions (lower
and/or middle and/or upper schools)
should plan to drop students off in each
designated campus check-in area. Those
that have face masks will be allowed to
continue using the mask they have. Those
without face masks will be provided with
one. All 5th through 8th graders should
wear a face mask throughout the school
day.
We understand that there may be circumstances
requiring students to have alternatives
to face masks. These students'
concerns will be addressed on a case-bycase
basis with extreme scrutiny for uniformity,
necessity and compliance purposes.
All students will be directed to the foyer
where they will pass through a thermal
temperature check-in station before being
directed to their designated classroom
areas.
Any student that has a temperature reading
of 100.4 degrees or above will be isolated
and re-checked. If their temperature
remains elevated, that student will be taken
to a separate safe holding area for reunification
with their emergency contact
person. 5th-8th grade students, employees,
and visitors who pass through a thermal
scanner and are not flagged for elevated
temperatures or have passed a temperature
recheck will be given a wristband
each day to verify that they have been
checked and approved to stay on campus
before heading to class. If you are seen in
any campus building without a wristband,
you will be asked to go to a selected temperature
scanning location to be checked
and receive a wristband. This applies to
late arrivals as well. Staff assisting in the
recheck process will be required to wear
face masks and gloves. Please refer to our
Health & Wellness section for our return to
campus policy.
Staff assigned to the drop-off / pick-up
process will be required to wear their face
mask at any time they are within 6 feet of
any person.
Afternoon pick-up will be conducted at
the same location as drop-off. Students
will be advised when and where to exit by
Gaston Day School staff. Late arrivals or
those that must be picked-up for offcampus
appointments will go to the PKW
building’s side entrance (with awning) for
check-in and check-out.
Morning Parental, Siblings,
Guardian Drop-Off, and student
drivers for grades
9th through 12th:
Students being dropped-off will enter campus
and pull up to the side entrance of the PKW in
front of the awning that leads into the foyer
nearest to the music side of the building. Students
will exit their vehicle one at a time or as
directed by staff, and will be directed inside by
assigned staff. As each vehicle leaves the next
will be allowed to pull up and exit, unless directed
otherwise by staff. Families with children/students
in multiple divisions (lower and/
or middle and/or upper schools) should plan
to drop students off in each designated campus
check-in area. Student drivers will park in
assigned parking spaces and will be directed
from their vehicles to the side entrance of the
PKW just as students who are dropped off.
Please keep in mind gate operation hours. We
will not allow early entry for student drop-off
or pick-up.
Those that have face masks will be allowed to
continue using the mask they have. Those
without masks will be provided with one. All
students should wear a face mask throughout
the school day. We understand that there
may be circumstances requiring students to
have alternatives to face masks. These students'
concerns will be addressed on a caseby-case
basis with extreme scrutiny for uniformity,
necessity and compliance purposes.
Once inside, all students will pass through a
thermal temperature check-in station before
being directed to their designated classroom
areas. Any student that has a temperature
reading above 100.4 degrees will be isolated
and re-checked. If their temperature remains
elevated, that student will be taken to a separate
safe holding area for reunification with
their emergency contact. 9th-12th grade students,
employees, and visitors who pass
through a thermal scanner and are not
flagged for elevated temperatures or have
passed a temperature recheck will be given a
wristband each day to verify that they have
been checked and approved to stay on campus
before heading to class. If you are seen in
any campus building without a wristband, you
will be asked to go to a selected temperature
scanning location to be checked and receive a
wristband. This applies to late arrivals as well.
Staff assisting in the recheck process will be
required to wear face masks and gloves. Student
drivers will be allowed to drive themselves
back home after communicating with
their emergency contact. Please refer to our
Health & Wellness section for our return to
campus policy.
Staff assigned to the drop-off / pick-up process
will be required to wear their face masks
at any time they are within 6 feet of any person.
Again, late arrivals or those that must be
picked-up for off-campus appointments will
go to the PKW building’s side entrance (with
awning) for check-in and check-out.
Afternoon pick-up will be conducted at the
same location as drop-off. Students will be advised
when and where to exit by Gaston Day
School staff. Student drivers may be released
in a staggered format from their designated
classroom to the nearest exit door to avoid
clustering. Students, although monitored, are
asked to avoid group conversations in the
parking lot while leaving. Staff assigned to
monitoring student drivers will be required to
wear their face masks at any time they are
within 6 feet of any person.
Bus Riders:
Specific times for pick up and
or drop off may fluctuate
based on unforeseen circumstances.
However, initial times will be disseminated
to bus riders as usual. It is important
to understand that we are staying
within the requirements, guidelines and
recommendations provided by the NC
Guidebook for reopening Public Schools,
the CDC Guidelines For Schools and the
recommendations of our GDS CoVid-19
Task Force as it applies to student busing.
In the interest of our obligation to the
health and safety of our students, we may
be faced with the necessity for staggered
pick-up and drop off times. Unless otherwise
notified that we are going to a staggered
time for pick-up and/or drop-off,
there will only be one time for morning
pick-up and drop-off.
Bus drivers will self-check their temperature
at the beginning of the day before
entering their buses. If their temperature
is above 100.4 degrees, they must perform
a recheck. If their temperature remains
elevated, they are not allowed to
drive the bus and must notify their supervisor
in a timely manner so that appropriate
arrangements are made for someone
else to complete their route. Please refer
to our Health & Wellness section for our
return to campus policy.
Due to close proximity within the confinement
of our school buses, all bus riders,
regardless of age, including the bus driver,
will be required to wear a face mask. If
they do not have a mask, one will be provided
to them. As students receive a signal
from the driver to get on the bus, the bus
driver will take their temperatures while
wearing a mask and gloves. If the student's
temperature is above 100.4 degrees,
a second reading will be taken. If
the student’s temperature remains elevated,
the student will not be permitted to
ride the bus or attend school and must return
to a parent’s vehicle. Therefore, it is
important for all parents of a bus rider, regardless
of age, to wait and ensure their
child can ride the bus to school. If your
child is sent back home with you, please
do not bring them to school the same day.
Students boarding the bus should use
hand sanitizer provided by the bus driver.
Students on the bus should wear face
masks at all times and follow instructions
of the driver. Markings are provided to indicate
where students should sit to maintain
as much distance as possible between
individuals (students living in the
same house may sit together). The bus
driver will dismiss students from the bus
individually to maintain spacing and to
prevent early release when on campus.
The bus driver will regularly disinfect commonly
touched surfaces on the bus using
disposable wipes while wearing gloves.
Bus Riders cont.
Upon campus arrival, all bus
riders will go through one of
our designated check-in stations
before going to their classroom. Remember,
all students are required to wear
a face mask upon entering any campus
building. Once all students have passed
through a thermal temperature check-in
station, they will be directed to their designated
classroom areas. We understand
that there may be circumstances requiring
students to have alternatives to face
masks. These students' concerns will be
addressed on a case-by-case basis with extreme
scrutiny for uniformity, necessity
and compliance purposes.
Any student that has a temperature reading
above 100.4 degrees will be isolated
and re-checked. If their temperature remains
elevated, that student will be taken
to a separate safe holding area for reunification
with their emergency contact. 5th-
12th grade students, who pass through a
thermal scanner and are not flagged for
elevated temperatures or have passed a
temperature recheck will be given a wristband
each day to verify that they have
been checked and approved to stay on
campus before heading to class. If you are
seen in any campus building without a
wristband, you will be asked to go to a selected
temperature scanning location to
be checked and receive a wristband. This
applies to late arrivals as well. Staff assisting
in the recheck process will be required
to wear face masks and gloves. Face
shields and gowns are optional unless
there is a need to monitor someone for
longer than 10 minutes. Again, please refer
to our Health & Wellness section for our return
to campus policy.
Bus drivers should maintain designated
entry points for specific grades. In no specific
order, Preschool- through 4th grade
will be dropped off in front of the main
building, Grades 5th - 8th will be dropped
off at the Henry Center’s main foyer entry,
and Grades 9th - 12th will be dropped off at
the side entrance of the PWK at the awning
entering closest to the music room.
Late arrivals or those that must be pickedup
for off-campus appointments will go to
the PKW building entrance (side with awning)
for check-in and check-out. Preschool
- through 4th grade will use the main office
for late arrival and early pick-up for offcampus
appointments.
In the afternoon, when it is time for bus riders
to leave, each bus rider will exit according
to our already established age groups
from their location or classroom. All students
will be picked up from the same area
they were dropped off. Again, all bus riders,
including the bus driver, will be required to
wear a face mask for drop-off.
Thermal temperature check on all GDS employees:
All GDS employees are subject to a
thermal temperature check at one
of the designated stations on a
daily basis. This is to be done before
they enter any classroom or
office at the beginning of each
workday. For speed of entry, employees
assigned to the lower school should use
the check-in station within the main
building upon entry to their classroom or
office. Employees assigned to the upper
school (circle area of the main building)
and PKW building should enter through
the PKW where a check-in station is set
up, and employees assigned to the Henry
Center should use the check-in station at
the Henry Center.
Coaches and personnel that only come after
school hours will be required to have a
temperature check as well. Although the
obvious location for a coach to receive a
temperature check is the Henry Center,
other personnel may use the other two
check-in locations depending on their assignment.
For example, an after-school
care employee may use the main entrance
or the Henry Center, while the instrument
instructors would use the PKW’s
check-in location. Any employee that has
a temperature reading of 100.4 degrees or
above will be isolated and re-checked. If
their temperature remains elevated, they
will be asked to leave and have a COVID-19
test as soon as possible. Employees, substitutes
and coaches who pass through a
thermal scanner and are not flagged for
elevated temperatures or have passed a
temperature recheck will be given a wristband
each day to verify that they have
been checked and approved to stay on
campus before heading to their assigned
areas. If you are seen in any campus building
without a wristband, you will be asked
to go to a selected temperature scanning
location to be checked and receive a
wristband. Please refer to our Health &
Wellness section for our return to campus
policy.
Campus visits by parents,
vendors, or other persons
expected or random:
Although we will attempt to limit the
number of campus visitors, all visitors will
be directed to the front entrance of our
main building. After 8:30 all doors normally
open for staff and student entry may be
locked. Unscheduled visitors, and vendors,
if allowed gate entry, will be directed to
the main office's front entrance. The main
front entrance door may be locked
throughout the day. Therefore, the use of
the doorbell system will be necessary.
Once entry is granted, all persons
will be subject to a thermal temperature
check. If elevated readings
are detected, visitors and/or vendors may
be asked to leave
campus and resume their business when
they have complied with the return to
campus policies on pages 17 and 18. Parents
may be asked to leave and return another
day, or return to their vehicle and
wait if they are on campus to pick up a
student for an off-campus appointment.
Drills:
The only mandated drill for
our school is the fire drill.
Fire drills will be conducted
and all staff will be retrained
on how we will conduct fire drills
while practicing physical distancing. However,
in a real fire, it should be understood
that physical distancing will not be required,
as getting everyone out as quickly
as possible always supersedes physical
distancing efforts. We also understand the
need for other drills, such as lock downs,
five-out, tornados etc. Drills will be evaluated
for operability under the threat level
presented by the virus.
As the threat level reduces, tabletop exercises
may be offered with consideration
for suitable practice of safe physical distancing.
If the threat level increases, we
will continue with the suspension of those
drills that are not mandated. Instead, we
will look at the utilization of mandating
emergency policy guideline review as a
method of familiarization with other drill
responses. Regardless of the threat level,
all real events should be done expeditiously
with regard to life-saving methods first
and foremost before concern of physical
distancing. Training is not associated with
drills. We will attempt to have as many
Covid-related training / scenarios as practical
throughout the school year.
Masks and Gowns
Studies show that face masks may protect
an individual from potentially getting
sick and are most effective at limiting
transmission through airborne droplets.
Families and students are encouraged
to acquire face masks and to practice
putting them on and taking them off
throughout the summer before school begins
to ensure the community maintains
the safest environment possible. By practicing
wearing a face mask before school
starts, individuals will be less likely to need
to adjust masks throughout the day and
will be better prepared to leave a mask on
and breathe normally which makes the
use of a mask more effective. It is recommended
that each member of the community
has at least two masks each day;
masks are most effective when they are
clean and dry.
The CDC recommends cloth masks be
worn when out of the house by everyone
over the age of 2 without an underlying
health condition preventing the use of a
mask.
We teach and reinforce the use of face
masks. Face masks may be challenging
for students (especially younger students)
to wear in all-day settings such as school.
Face masks should be worn at all times by
staff and students when inside a common
area or within six feet of another person
(particularly older students), and are most
essential at times when physical distancing
is difficult. Individuals should be frequently
reminded not to touch their face
masks and to wash their hands often. Information
should be provided to staff, students,
and students’ families on proper
use, removal, and washing of face masks.
Note: Face masks should not be placed on:

Children younger than 2 years old
Anyone who has trouble breathing or is unconscious
Anyone who is incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the face mask without
assistance
Face masks are meant to protect other people in case the wearer is unknowingly infected
but does not have symptoms.
Face masks should:
Fit snugly but comfortably against the side of
the face.
Be secured with ties or ear loops.
Include multiple layers of fabric.
Allow for breathing without restriction.
Be able to be laundered and machine dried
without damage or change to shape.
Be laundered daily, hot water and normal
laundry
Be worn whenever students leave the house
Gaston Day School Crisis Response Policy and Procedure Guidelines | Published July 2020 | Revised 9.23.20 15

Masks and Gowns cont.
All individuals on campus should wear a
clean, functional face mask. Individuals
may remove their masks temporarily to
eat, drink, replace a damaged or soiled
mask, or to care for a sneeze or runny
nose. Individuals must avoid touching
their masks or faces whenever possible
throughout the school day. A proper procedure
for taking off or putting on a mask
is available through this link. It is recommended
that each member of the community
brings at least two masks each
day and that masks be laundered after
each use and before reusing.
Staff assisting in the recheck process will
be required to wear face masks and
gloves. Face shields and gowns are optional
unless there is a need to monitor
someone for longer than 10 minutes.
Gowns must be changed if the monitor
comes in direct contact with any student
or bodily fluids. All gowns must be cleaned
at the end of each shift. Monitors will wear
clean gowns at the start of each day.
All individuals on campus should wash
hands frequently and ALWAYS wash
hands...
While an individual’s mask is off, for example
during lunch, and if the mask will be
reused before laundering it, the mask
should be stored in a breathable container
(cloth bag or paper bag) with the outside
face turned in against itself to avoid potentially
contaminating the inner surface.
Individuals will avoid touching their eyes,
nose, and mouth. If replacing a face mask,
used masks should be stored in an airtight
container (sandwich bag, Tupperware) until
laundered.
Lower school teachers may find it necessary
to touch a student’s mask in order to
assist with taking it off or putting it on. In
those cases, the teacher should:

Wear gloves
Avoid touching contaminated
surfaces of the mask while helping
the student
Change gloves before touching
another student
Wash or disinfect hands after
disposing of gloves
In the event that a mask is damaged or
unusable for some reason, there may be
times when a disposable mask is used. A
brief guide to properly putting on and taking
off a disposable mask is available
through this link.

when hands are dirty
when leaving the bathroom
before eating or drinking
after eating or drinking
before and after removing or
putting on a mask
after blowing nose, caring for a
runny nose, or sneezing
after touching a shared surface
(doorknob, table, chair, etc.)
Properly washing hands involves...
wetting hands under running water
lather with soap and scrub for at
least 20 seconds
rinse
dry (try to avoid touching shared
surfaces including the faucet handle
and doorknob)
Hand sanitizer is effective but should be used
when soap and water are not available.
Gaston Day School Crisis Response Policy and Procedure Guidelines | Published July 2020 | Revised 9.23.20 16

Cleaning throughout
the school day:
Commonly touched surfaces
(door handles, light switches,
desks) may be disinfected
using disposable wipes
throughout the day. Though
it is not considered preferable
to washing hands with
soap and water, hand sanitizer
is provided in each
class space and at the entrances
to the school.
In spaces where students
move throughout the day (subject classrooms,
middle and upper school), it is necessary
to clean and disinfect commonly
touched surfaces (doorknobs, desks,
chairs, etc.) between each group of students.
After applying disinfectant according
to the product instructions, students
and staff should wash hands thoroughly
with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer
if soap and water are not available.

High touch surfaces made of plastic
or metal, such as grab bars and
railings, should be cleaned routinely.
Cleaning and disinfection of
wooden surfaces (play structures,
benches, tables) or groundcovers
(mulch, sand) is not recommended.
In bathrooms and other shared spaces,
commonly touched surfaces (door handles,
light switches, faucets, etc.) will be
disinfected throughout the day. Gloves
and cleaning supplies to clean and disinfect
these surfaces are handled by staff according
to the manufacturer’s instructions,
and staff should wash hands regularly.
Outdoor areas like playgrounds in schools
and parks generally require normal routine
cleaning, but do not require disinfection.
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-
ncov/community/disinfecting-buildingfacility.html

It is not necessary to spray disinfect
ant on outdoor playgrounds - it is
not an efficient use of supplies and
is not proven to reduce risk of
COVID-19 to the public.
Students or staff developing symptoms during the school day:
Symptoms of COVID-19 include the
following:

Fever or chills
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty
Students and staff developing symptoms
during the school day (including
temperature screenings upon entry
to the school) will be isolated and
sent home as soon as possible. There
is staff available to observe and provide support and help with basic needs. Staff caring
for students developing symptoms during the school day will:
Provide support and help cover basic needs
Look for emergency warning signs and seek emergency medical care (911)
immediately if:

Trouble breathing
Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
New confusion
Inability to wake or stay awake
Bluish lips or face

Wear face masks, shields, disposable gloves, and gowns when in contact with sick
individuals for longer than 10 minutes.
Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces
Cleaning after a Positive Case:
Classrooms and bathrooms used by the individual will be closed off for a minimum of 24
hours before being cleaned and disinfected. After being disinfected, the classrooms and
other spaces may be used normally.
Procedure for Notifying the school of a Positive Case:
We require that any student or employee identified with COVID-19 notifies Gaston
Day School so that we may begin to take mandated precautions for closing any section
of the school to include the entire school. The privacy of the information provided
to us is paramount. We will only release information to local or state health officials
as required.
The Gaston County Health Department is also required to notify us of any person(s) that
has tested positive for COVID-19 in Gaston County and is associated with Gaston Day
School, while they conduct their health assessment and track potentially affected persons.
Any delay in your notification to us only places the health and safety of all GDS
members at risk. We ask for your support and openness if ever your child or family
member poses a risk to others within our campus.
Return to school of students or
employees that have tested
positive with COVID-19 must
meet the following criteria:
1. 10 days since positive COVID diagnosis
must have past AND
2. Have been asymptomatic for 72
hours (fever-free without the use
of fever-reducing medicines and other
COVID symptoms improving) AND
3. Have a doctors note certifying that
you are ok to return to school
Return of students or employees
with direct contact of person that
has tested positive with COVID-19:

Quarantine for 14 days and take a COVID-19
test no earlier than 7 days after the direct
contact has happened.
If that person starts to develop symptoms
during the 14 day quarantine:
Must take a COVID-19 test no earlier than 7
days after direct contact has happened

Must quarantine for an additional 10 days
from symptom onset
Must be fever free for 24 hours without the
use of fever reducing medicines

Symptoms must be improving
Return of students or employees
sent home with an elevated
temperature:
1. Fever free without the use of feverreducing
medicines for 24 hours AND a
doctor’s note certifying that you are ok
to return to school
Because some individuals are asymptomatic,
(do not experience any of the COVID-19 related
symptoms, even if positive) it is imperative that
we know if they are positive or negative for
tracking purposes.
Direct contact is defined as being
within 6ft of an infected person with
or without a mask for more than ten
minutes.
All return policies related to COVID-19 are subject to change based
on state and local regulations.
Travel
It is common for members of our GDS family to travel within the United States and
abroad/international at any time of the school year. Although we do not discourage freedom
of travel, we do ask that you use caution when traveling. As designated under the
CDC travel advisory, members of our GDS family may be subject to self-quarantine upon
their return. If a quarantine is imposed upon you, you are required to notify Gaston Day
School by phone and/or email if you are in quarantine status within 24 hours of being
quarantined, or as soon as you return to the United States.
Please understand that all U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, and their immediate
families who are returning from a restricted country must self-quarantine in their homes
for 14 days after their arrival. In order to ensure compliance, local and state public health
officials will contact individuals in the days and weeks following their arrival.
The CDC ranks all potential international travel as “Level 3/ Avoid non-essential travel” as
of June 21, 2020 and recommends that anyone traveling internationally stay home for 14
days after returning.
https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/warning/coronavirus-global
When traveling to inter/intra states that are considered “hot
spots”.
When COVID-19 is spreading
in your community or the
state you’re visiting that is
considered a “hot spot” as defined
by the CDC (currently
North Carolina is a hot spot),
you may have a higher chance
of becoming infected or infecting
others. With great
consideration for the health
and safety of all our Gaston
Day family, we expect anyone
traveling to take the precautions
necessary before returning
to Gaston Day School’s
campus. However, if you are traveling anywhere and are participating in “at risk” behavior
which increases the potential for the onset of COVID-19, require that you extend your stay
at home for a minimum of 10 days without any symptoms as mentioned above.
We also encourage students to notify Gaston Day School of their travel and intentions to
participate in our virtual learning program during a 10 day self quarantine. If during your
self quarantine period, you develop symptoms related to COVID-19, we ask that you follow
our return to school policy on pg.16 of this document.
At risk behavior is defined by Gaston Day School as going to any location where the num-
er of people gathered indoors or outdoors exceeds the number of people allowed by
the State of North Carolina’s regulation under COVID-19 at the time of the event, and
where the activity level is very loud (meaning shouting, spitting and airborne speech
droplets that are capable of spreading further than normal), and the physical distancing
is less than 6 feet with or without masks on.
Example1: (Planned visit) You are going to visit your parents in Wilmington or Huntersville or Florida
a) Your mode of transportation is by train, plane or vehicle.
Ok as long as your mask is on for the train or plane ride (private jet excluded),
and your mask is not required in the vehicle with your own family.
b) While at your parent you make a couple of errands to the store and spend the
rest of the visit at home with parents and family.
Ok see you at school upon your return.
Example 2: (Planned visit - unplanned outcome) You are going to visit your parents in Wilmington or
Huntersville or Florida
a) Your mode of transportation is by train, plane or vehicle
again Ok as long as your mask is on for the train or plane ride (private jet
excluded), and your mask is not required in the vehicle with your own family.
b) While at your parents some old school friends come by and you decided to have
a good old fashioned cookout with only 10 to 15 of your friends and their families.
During which time there are plenty of jokes, stories and laughter, with no mask
wearing all throughout the night.
Not Ok. We are glad you had a great time, but for the safety of Gaston Day, we require you to
stay at home for a minimum of 10 days without any symptoms as mentioned above and to notify
Gaston Day School of your travel and intentions to participate in our virtual learning program duri
ng a 10 day self quarantine. If during your self quarantine period, you develop symptoms related to
COVID-19, we ask that you follow our return to school policy on pg.16 of this document.
Note to GDS employees: Engagement in high risk behavior may require you to use your sick/
personal leave time.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Staff- Take your assigned GDS laptop,
ipad, & charger home with you daily. Do
not remove any desktop computers, printers,
or other devices from campus without
approval from the IT department.
Gaston Day will manage the following
devices as indicated per division:
1 Laptop or desktop per faculty
member
1 Ipad per teacher in MS/US
The user is financially responsible
if equipment needs to be repaired
as a result of accidental damage or
is lost or stolen. For pricing and
other information, please refer to
the Staff Responsible Use Policy
located in the Faculty Handbook.
Students- Take your device and
charger home with you daily. Please refer
to the Technology Code of Conduct located
in the Family Handbook as well as the
Technology Responsible Use Policy.
Cleaning Shared Technology
Please follow cleaning procedures
between each group of students.
Cleaning shared surfaces is a vital part of
reducing the spread of unwanted germs.
Please follow the proper procedures for
sanitizing your electronics to avoid damage
to these devices. These instructions
can be applied to computers, phones, and
other high touch electronics.
You may use a Clorox (or other sanitizing)
wipe or a lint free cloth or towel with isopropyl
alcohol to sanitize devices. Please
do not use any gels or hand sanitizers on
your devices. Any sprays should be applied
to the cloth and not to the device directly.
The below steps should be completed in
order to reduce the risk of damage:
Completely power off the device
and unplug any chargers or external
devices from the device (ex: external
USB keyboard or mouse)
Make sure the wipe is damp but not
fully saturated, if squeezed no liquid
should drip from the cloth. Wring out
wipe if needed before using it on the
keyboard or screen of the laptop so
that excessive liquid does not come into
contact with delicate electronic connections.
Wipe down the device on outside
and over screen and keyboard and let
air dry completely before closing the
laptop
Once completely dried you can
close or turn the device back on
After applying disinfectant according to
the product instructions, students and
staff should wash hands thoroughly with
soap and water, or use hand sanitizer if
soap and water are not available.
