As we are all getting used to the “new

I have been to The Larwood and Voce on many occasions 

and was therefore looking forward to going following the 

relaxing of the lockdown measures at the beginning of July. 

U 

pon arrival I was greeted by Emma 

the assistant manager (donning 

her face shield) who upon entering 

took my temperature, which whilst 

may feel strange initially, but these are 

indeed strange times and therefore upon 

reflection does give the re-assurance 

that the management have taken the 

necessary steps to ensure not only the 

customers, but the staff’s safety seriously. 

We were asked if we would like a table in 

the bar or restaurant or a table outside 

on the external decking, Due to the 

understandable nervousness of some 

people, they have also set aside some of 

the car park and added additional seating. 

Emma, showed us to our table and asked 

us what we would like to drink, this was 

our first difficult choice, as with its sister 

pub The Wollaton, they offer an extensive 

range of gins and cocktails and therefore 

I decided to go for a Warner’s rhubarb 

gin and tonic. My colleagues, went for 

a mocktail and the other a more simple 

sparkling water. 

For those not familiar with The Larwood 

and Voce, it sits under one of the stands 

of the Trent Bridge cricket ground, and 

therefore is a great place to visit if you are 

going to watch any of the cricket or indeed 

going to watch Nottingham Forest play, 

however, in the case of the latter only home 

fans are allowed in. It was at this point that 

Emma pointed out that they had installed 

a web based ordering system from their 

home page, this allowed customers to 

order and pay direct from their table for 

both food and drink to take away the need 

to go inside and therefore limit the 

number of the people circulating in the 

pub. Simply create your account, enter 

your table number, and order and pay 

and the drinks or food will be bought 

straight to your table, this is for both 

inside and outside which is a brilliant 

way to put at ease those that are 

nervous about going out. 

Onto the more important stuff, food. We 

were served by Matt, the front of house 

manager. Matt ran through the menus 

including the daily specials. I went for 

goats cheese & heritage tomato salad, 

pumpkin seeds, green sauce, croutons 

(£6) and my colleague went for the chicken 

and ham hock terrine with chicory, pear, 

hazelnut and blue cheese (£7), both were 

generous portions delightfully presented 

with amazing tasting goats cheese, with 

the freshest of tomatoes. 

For mains, I went for the buttermilk fried 

chicken fillet burger, hot sauce, bacon 

mayo, Monterey Jack, pickle, chips & slaw 

(£13.50), which again was delightful, my 

colleague decided to go for the salmon 

escalope, fennel, coriander & parmesan 

crust, new potatoes, sprouting broccoli 

& hollandaise (£15). The chicken burger 

was incredible moist chicken coated in 

a crisp breadcrumb served in a brioche 

bun with just the right amount of heat. 

The salmon escalope was again cooked to 

perfection accompanied by a lovely crust 

with delightful vegetables on the side. 

For dessert, although probably not 

required, I went for the vanilla panna 

cotta, served with Starkey’s raspberries & 

honeycomb (£6) and my colleague went 

for the Southwell strawberry pavlova & 

Chantilly cream (£6) both delicious. Mine 

was perfectly set with the freshest of fruit 

served on the side. My colleague’s pavlova 

again looked amazing, perfectly cooked 

meringue covered in the strawberries 

with a generous dollop of cream on the 

side. Congratulations to Nikki, the Head 

Chef/General Manager. 

In summary I couldn’t fault The Larwood 

and Voce either on the steps taken in 

these unusual times or indeed the food.

Lovely Leftovers 

For me, leftovers are almost better than the 

original meal. Foraging through the fridge to feed 

my family is a challenge that I rise to on a regular 

basis. 

There is nothing more satisfying than managing 

to feed four of us for three days on the trot from 

one roast. After a chicken dinner we might have 

a warm potato salad with chicken and chorizo 

then I will boil the carcass and make a stock for 

a risotto. I also pull all the meat off the boiled up 

bones and the cats and dogs get a special treat. 

Nothing is wasted. 

A good fridge forager will always keep a few tins 

and jars in the cupboard for padding out their 

creations. I always have pesto, tinned tomatoes, 

beans, pulses and cheese ready to go. 

For soft fruit that has gone a bit too soft, I bung 

it in the blender with some milk, Greek yoghurt, 

a splash of maple syrup and whiz it up for a 

breakfast smoothie or I chuck it in a cake. 

Egg fried rice is easy and a great way to use 

your leftover rice. Heat a bit of oil or butter in 

a non-stick frying pan, add the rice and give it a 

good stir, add some Chinese five spice, chopped 

spring onions and then push it over to one side 

– in the space add a couple of beaten eggs and 

scramble them then mix through the rice. I could 

eat this all day, everyday. 

The three recipes opposite were all made in a 

week using whatever I had in the fridge. They are 

all adaptable and hopefully will inspire you to give 

your leftovers a lift!

Ratatouille Risotto 

I love the Bosh! vegan cook book and 

this is where the inspiration for this recipe 

came from. Quantities of veg can be 

changed according to what you have. 

2 x medium aubergines - cubed 

1 x red pepper – chunky slices 

1 x courgette - cubed 

3 tbsp olive oil 

2 tsp dried oregano 

1 x onion – finely chopped 

2 x garlic cloves – finely chopped 

250g risotto rice 

1 ltr chicken or veg stock 

25ml white wine 

1 tbsp tomato puree 

1 tbsp green pesto 

Parmesan and fresh basil to serve 

Method 

Heat oven 200°C. Put the aubergine, 

pepper and courgette in a baking tray, 

toss with 2 tbsp olive oil, oregano and 

salt and pepper. Roast for about 40 

mins until soft. Toss half way through. 

Meanwhile in a large pan heat the rest 

of the olive oil and gently fry the onion 

for 10 mins or until soft. Add the garlic 

for the last 2 mins. Add the rice to the 

pan, mix well, add the tomato puree and 

mix again then pour the wine in and boil 

until it’s evaporated. Add the stock a bit 

at a time, stirring until it’s absorbed and 

the rice is cooked. For extra flavour I 

chuck in the end of a block of parmesan 

(remember to remove before serving). 

Add the cooked veg and stir in the pesto. 

Serve topped with grated parmesan and 

fresh basil.This would also be delicious 

topped with crumbled feta cheese. 

Top tip: save the hard ends from your 

parmesan and add to soups and risotto’s 

for extra flavour. 

Spaghetti Omelette 

I always cook way too much pasta. 

With pasta shapes it’s easy to make a 

pasta salad. With spaghetti or linguine 

this is my absolute favourite recipe. 

It’s delicious sliced up cold the next day 

as well. Leftover leftovers!! 


Cold spaghetti – chopped up 

6 x large eggs 

Milk – just a splash 

2 handfuls grated cheese 

Sundried tomatoes or cherry toms 

2 tbsp pesto sauce 

Chorizo sausage – sliced (optional) 

Fresh basil and 

sliced tomatoes (optional) 

Method 

In a large bowl mix the spaghetti with the 

pesto, half the cheese and the tomatoes. 

If using chorizo, cook in a non-stick frying 

pan (don’t add oil if using chorizo as it 

creates enough oil). If not using chorizo, 

heat the oil in the pan. Add the spaghetti 

mix and spread evenly in the pan. Mix 

the eggs in a jug, add a splash of milk. 

Pour the eggs in the pan and distribute 

evenly. Cook on a low heat until almost 

set, then sprinkle the rest of the cheese 

on top. You could top with tomatoes if 

you have any and I put torn fresh basil 

on top as well. Finish off under the grill 

until the eggs are set and the cheese is 

golden brown and bubbling. 

Messy Mushroom 

Melt with Crispy 

Potatoes 

This was designed to use up some slow 

cooked BBQ brisket we had left over. 

It would be equally delicious with any 

pulled meat or for veggies, double up the 

mushrooms. 

1 x bag new potatoes 


1 pack portabello mushrooms – stalks 

removed 

Blue cheese – or any other 

melting cheese 

Burger buns (optional) 

1 x red onion – thickly sliced 

Leftover BBQ brisket (about 500g) 

Method 

Get the oven on 200°C. Put the spuds 

in a large pan of salted water and boil 

until they are soft. Then drain and put in a 

roasting tin. Crush gently with the back of 

a spoon. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle 

with salt. Roast in the oven for about 

30mins until the edges are going crispy. 

Meanwhile in a smaller roasting pan put 

the red onion and mushroom stalks – toss 

with a little olive oil. Rest the mushrooms 

on the top, stalk side up. Season and put 

in the oven. You want the onions soft and 

the mushrooms almost cooked. After 15 

mins remove and add the cheese into the 

mushroom tops. Then back in the oven 

for 5 mins until the cheese is melted. 

The meat can be heated in the oven 

at the same time. To serve, butter your 

cobs, pile on the pulled meat, top with 

a cheesy mushroom (or two), put the 

crispy spuds on the side and prepare to 

get messy!

TENET 

THE HATER 

One of the more intriguing films brought to the table 

by Netflix this year, The Hater tells the story of Tomasz, 

a narcissistic, disgraced law student who joins an 

internet troll farm. His love for a girl goes unrequited 

and her politically-immersed family that finance him 

end up disowning him. This feeds his dedication 

to causing turmoil amongst political candidates 

using Facebook groups and fake accounts. Young 

Tomasz continuously refuses to realise these online 

ways of venting his frustrations from isolation and 

rejections are bound to have very violent and very real 

consequences outside the web. 

Maciej Musiałowsk does a fantastic job at portraying 

a power-hungry secluded internet genius with his vast 

array of suppressed emotions creating a believable 

ticking-time-bomb sociopath similar to characters 

seen in films like Taxi Driver. 

This helps bring the film’s script and Jan Komasa’s 

great direction to life. It deals with complex 

relationships and entangled scenarios while having 

enough breathing space for performances and 

cinematography to take effect, making the intense 

and even morbid feel of scenes take full effect as 

more foreshadowing to the inevitable explosion of 

violence accumulates. 

This is a suspenseful antihero film with well-layered 

characters that delves beyond simple concepts of 

‘internet = bad’ and more into the consequences 

of an unawareness of power abuse with strong 

performances and engaging dialogue

Tenet is the 11th directorial feature from 

acclaimed filmmaker, Christopher Nolan. 

It’s also one of the most hotly anticipated 

films of the entirety of 2020. 

This is the kind of film that has many 

examples of incredible direction and wellchoreographed, 

unique action set pieces 

that completely reinvents the wheel for 

films of this genre. 

With this film, Nolan opted to hire Hoyte 

Van Hoytema as the cinematographer. A risk 

that absolutely paid off, because beyond 

being an astonishingly gorgeous looking 

movie, it perfectly captures the action and 

helps make it as immersive as it is. 

It helps that a lot of the action in this film 

is done practically rather than relying 

on an overabundance of CGI. However, 

where Tenet delivers on spectacle, it 

is unfortunately a VERY hard film to 

understand. Although it tries to explain its 

plot, it comes across as convoluted and I 

often found myself completely lost as to 

what was going on in the story at certain 

points in time which may be the kind of 

thing that would require multiple watches 

but as for my first time seeing the film, I was 

left confused and slightly frustrated by the 

end of it.

When we agreed to be the central hub for 

Nottingham - For The Love Of Scrubs group, little 

did we know we would still be going strong in 

August! 

Four months of making and the requests are still 

coming in. We have hit over 28,000 makes so far, 

these include scrubs, headbands, scrubs caps, 

laundry bags, ear savers and face masks for the 

NHS, community workers, frontline key workers and 

vulnerable groups around Nottinghamshire. 

We have only been able to do this with the hard work 

and commitment of hundreds of volunteers giving 

their time to help with sewing, sharing information to 

their contacts, delivering requested items, running 

local hubs, coordinating distribution, managing 

supplies, admin of the facebook group and all the 

other things needed to ensure the smooth running of 

a group of over 1700 supporters . 

We also wouldn’t have been able to get this far 

without the ongoing support of the managers of the 

Urban Room at 38 Carrington Street. 

With talk of a second wave it looks like things aren’t 

going to slow up any time soon. We are therefore 

putting plans in place so that we can continue to 

operate over the next 6 months, allowing us to 

continue responding to requests for help.

doctor is urging people 

to seek medical attention 

straight away if they are 

feeling unwell, following 

growing evidence that 

people are going to GPs 

and doctors too late. 

Dr Ron Daniels BEM, an intensive 

care doctor at University Hospitals 

Birmingham NHS Foundation 

Trust, working at Heartlands and 

Good Hope Hospitals, said it was 

imperative that people laid aside 

their fears of “catching Covid-19” 

at GP surgeries and other 

healthcare facilities. 

“We are now in a position of 

unintended consequences and 

after effects on mental health as a 

result of lockdown, which means 

people are not presenting with 

symptoms early,” he said. 

“We’re not seeing a holistic 

approach to these conditions, 

perhaps because we’re focusing 

unilaterally on Covid-19. In 

making decisions around 

reopening or restricting society, 

we need to look at PCR tests 

in the context of case 

fatality rates, ICU occupancy and 

how many tests are being done. 

“There is a perceived fear around 

Covid-19 but this has to be 

balanced by issues caused by 

other health problems. We’re 

seeing people come into hospital 

who are severely ill who would’ve 

presented earlier, were it not for 

Covid-19 and this is a massive 

problem because we’re seeing 

some severe pathology. 

“There’s huge anxiety among the 

population at the moment even 

when there are very few patients 

in hospital with Covid-19. 

You’re very unlikely to bump 

into a patient with Covid-19 in a 

hospital in the West Midlands at 

the moment. 

“Of course, we have to be 

mindful of Covid and follow 

the guidelines but the NHS 

has capacity and it is open for 

business – we are urging 

anyone who is unwell to seek 

medical attention.” 

Dr Daniels, who is also Founder 

and Executive Director of The 

UK Sepsis Trust, said clinicians 

are seeing late cancer, sepsis, 

pneumonia and heart attack 

presentations. 

“We are also seeing young, 

healthy people who have 

developed sepsis as a 

consequence of pneumonia,” 

he said. 

Dr Daniels also warned that there 

is potential for as many as 20% of 

Covid-19 survivors to be at risk of 

sepsis within 12 months of being 

discharged from hospital. 

The UK Sepsis Trust has launched 

its Blurred Lines campaign to 

raise awareness of the problem, 

which could save the Government 

millions of pounds and save lives. 

Dr Daniels said a £1 million 

investment in awareness of the 

symptoms of sepsis, made right 

now, could save as much as £200 

million in treatment and benefits. 

About 245,000 people are 

affected by sepsis in the UK with 

at least 48,000 people losing 

their lives every year. 

The UK Sepsis Trust and the York 

Health Economics Consortium 

have calculated that for every 

patient who is diagnosed early 

there is a cash saving to the NHS 

of more than £5,500, which 

means that 20,000 sepsis 

patients could cost society more 

than £1 billion in patient care 

and benefits. 

Dr Daniels said: “Covid-19 is a 

disease caused by the immune 

system over-reacting to infection, 

which is exactly what sepsis is. 

The question to ask is: if I feel ill, 

could it be sepsis?” 

In adults, sepsis may feel like 

‘flu, gastroenteritis or a chest 

infection at first, with early 

symptoms including fever, chills 

and shivering, a fast heartbeat 

and quick breathing. 

Other symptoms of sepsis or 

septic shock include feeling 

dizzy or faint, confusion or 

disorientation, nausea and 

vomiting, diarrhoea and cold, 

clammy and pale or mottled skin.

I have written previously about 

mental health in the workplace 

and how to recognise and support 

colleagues who may be struggling 

but now it is more important than 

ever. A recent study discovered that 

67% of companies expect working from home to be 

permanent or long lasting. 

The benefits of doing so have been well documented 

during the pandemic but we must also recognise that 

it leads many to a dark place. The Zero Suicide Alliance 

reported that over half a million people had accessed 

their online course in a three week period at the 

beginning of lockdown. 

Working from home does create a bit of a bubble so it’s 

vital to reach out to others and to humanise everyday 

contact. Employers must invest more than ever before 

in meeting their employee’s mental health needs. 

• Understand what they are going through and the 

factors affecting their well-being 

• Guide them towards the appropriate counselling or 

therapy where necessary 

• Be flexible in terms of working hours and environment 

– coronaphobia is a reality for many 

• Use personal development as a tool to increase 

confidence and a healthier mindset 

• Supporting lone homeworkers and checking in on 

them regularly to make sure they are okay

We visited Go Ape back in very different circumstances but 

gladly they are up and running again with extra hygiene 

and safety measures in place to make it enjoyable for all. 

When we went the staff approached us with smiling faces, 

talked us through a safety briefing and then strapped us 

into our harnesses and we had to practice the clipping and 

swapping procedures. 

All of us were placed on the Treetop Challenge (£35) – what 

fun that was!! This section is aimed at adults and more 

adventurous (10+) children. There are many different tree 

top obstacles but the one that stood out for us was swinging 

across into a cargo net after a huge drop. This adventure 

lasted approx. 2-3 hours. 

Go Ape is suitable for all ages. The Treetop Adventure 

plus (£25) is aimed at adventurous 6+ children and adults, 

they have a Treetop Adventure (£20) that is suitable 

for both the mad and modest individual over 1m tall. 

Nets Adventure (£20) is tree houses, netted walkways 

and bouncy nets full of inflatable balls, all 30ft above the 

forest floor.

So before we know it, Autumn is 

upon us. 

It looks a little different this year. 

For a start we now know that 

there is to be no Goose Fair, one 

of the city’s largest annual events, 

and at the time of going to print, 

live entertainment, not just in 

Nottingham but around the country, 

is still on hold. Thankfully there are 

still plenty of things to do and events 

taking place all over the County. 

Here’s my pick for this October and 

November in Notts. 

The Nottingham Wise Owl Walk 

is running throughout October until 

November 6th. Ten decorative Owls 

have taken up residency thanks to 

Nottingham Business Improvement 

District (BID). Their aim is to attract 

families and visitors back into the 

City Centre. Every Owl is completely 

unique and has been created by Wild 

in Art. The goal is to find each Owl, 

which is the proud owner of a single 

letter - Find them all and crack the 

code to reveal the secret sentence of 

Nottingham’s Wise Owls. 

The Nottingham Robin Hood Beer 

and Cider Festival was put back to 

November (still going ahead at the 

time of going to print - proposed 

dates 18-21 November) with 

tickets hopefully going on sale in 

October. Check the website for the

Events at Papplewick Pumping 

Station were postponed but have 

returned with limited numbers. 

Admission is now by pre-purchased

Halloween Week Outdoor Cinema 

is coming to Nottingham with a 

host of classic and cult movies

safely. Bookings are for a minimum 

of 2 people but larger groups are

Thoresby Park have a few events 

scheduled to take place. The 

Pawsby Dog Show is scheduled 

for 25 October. Bringing you fun for 

all the family with demonstrations, 

have a go activities and a fun dog 

show, and we begin to see the 

first Christmas markets taking 

place as their annual Winter Fest 

is still planned to go ahead 28-29

Patchings Art Centre will also open 

their doors to over 50 exhibitors for 

their annual Christmas Market (27- 

29 November). All exhibitors have 

been selected because they design 

and make their own stock, ensuring 

the pieces created are individual. 

It wouldn’t be Christmas without 

a pantomime and we’re told that 

the Nottingham Playhouse annual 

pantomime will still be going ahead 

in some form. At the time of going 

to print we’re not quite sure on the 

details, but they are endeavouring 

to make sure you don’t miss out on 

any of the usual fun this Christmas.

Heather Lane has been Nominated for the National Young 

Arranger Making Music Award and has successfully reached 

the final three. Heather used her skills to arrange a Calamity 

Jane package which the chorus performed in Spain 2019 at 

the International Spanish Barbershop Convention coming 

home with a Silver Medal. The final takes place in September 

with a Virtual Competition for the three finalists to which we 

have all been invited. Since Heather has been arranging her 

music, Gem’s Repertoire has grown and now contains many 

of her very popular songs. 

The Gem’s can’t wait to be able to sing together again but 

know it will be quite some time away. Till then we will be 

staying connected with our regular Zoom sessions.

other choirs, had to suspend its face-to-face activities in

to life as soon as we are confident we can start to meet

So you have this huge pile of photos, what next? Probably 

the most important thing is to establish your objectives 

with regards to the photo collection 

Being able to access your photographs 

For most people this is the overall requirement. 

Hundreds of photographs in a box won’t get looked at 

from one year to the next, however if the photos are 

scanned (made into digital files) the whole family have a 

chance to access them – even if it is simply to get their 

own copy of prints. 

Distribution 

Hard copy photographs are difficult to share, especially 

if they are the only one left in existence. Once you have a 

digital copy every family member can have a copy. 

Repairing Damaged Prints 

With a decent scan of a damaged or problem image it is 

possible to fix whatever is wrong, even issues that have 

been part of the original print. 

Preserving Originals 

Once scanned, original prints can be safely stored, 

perhaps even indexed. 

A Family History 

Having a collection of accessible images can bring a 

family closer together and increase the interest of newer 

generations in those of the past. The digitised images 

are easy to incorporate into family trees for instance.

Digital images can easily be incorporated into photo 

books, and copy prints made

now live! Notts Swap Shop follows in the footsteps 

of the successful Derby Swap Shop launched by 

Ask the Chameleon, Think3 and HUUB Design back

The Swap Shop concept is simple, based on the 

children’s TV show of the 70s and 80s – a business 

or charity is looking for help with something, and has 

something they can offer in return. Simply register on

flexible and if an organisation is in need of something

Fleas are a year long problem, they enjoy the summer sunshine as well as your central heating in the 

winter. Common hotspots for fleas in the home are soft furnishing and carpets; airing cupboards; pet 

bedding; cars and the garden. If your pet has fleas you should treat your entire house and other areas 

where your pet may spend time. 

Ticks are found in long grass waiting for their next host (dog, cat or even humans!!) to brush past them 

and attach themselves. They have highly developed mouthparts, will allow them to pierce the skin and 

feed on blood, often causing a reaction at this site. Ticks can transmit diseases such as Lyme Disease. 

Lungworm is a life threatening parasite, which dogs can become infected with if they accidently eat 

infected slugs, snails or even frogs. Symptoms are varied but can include tiring easily, coughing, 

bleeding problems and weight loss. If treated early enough, a dog can make a full recovery. However, 

re-infection is possible so on-going preventative treatment is recommended. 

Roundworms are large white worms that live in the small intestines. Roundworm eggs can survive in 

the environment for a long time and pets can contract roundworm by accidently swallowing them. 

Symptoms can include pot belly, poor coat, diarrhoea and poor growth, but symptoms are not always 

obvious. Humans can be affected by roundworms - they migrate within body tissue and in extreme 

cases can cause blindness. 

Tapeworms can affect hunting cats and scavenging dogs. They live in the small intestine. Your pet can 

contract tapeworm by eating the intermediate host such as mice and even fleas, meaning that even 

indoor cats can become infected by ingesting fleas. Often your pet will show no signs of having 

tapeworm. However, tapeworm segments in the poo can cause irritation and pets may “scoot” their 

bottom across the floor. Vomiting or diarrhoea may also occur.

talk about ‘saving 

hens’ about then? 

Well believe 

me these girls 

deserve saving. All 

commercial farmers, 

battery, barn or free 

range, will get rid of 

their flock at just 72 

weeks, giving the 

hens a life expectancy of only 18 months. Yet the girls 

will happily go on laying for 4-5 years. 

Commercial pressure on the farmer means the hen 

is not viable after 72 weeks. The absolute certainty 

of an egg a day becomes less guaranteed so they are 

sold on - for cheap meat pies and dog/cat food 

This is where FRESH START FOR HENS steps in.

(and that is usually 2500-3000 hens) and hired vans

10 steps to crate train your 

dog

1. The crate needs to be big enough for your dog to lie down, 

stand up and turn around in, with access to food and water. 

2. Let your dog have a look around the crate at this stage. 

Do not approach or attempt to close the crate door even if 

your dog seems happy inside the crate. 

3. Start to give every meal in the crate but do not close the 

crate door at this stage. 

4. If during the day your dog goes into the crate always 

reward them with a treat. 

5. Place food in interactive feeders such as a Kong into the 

crate to encourage your dog to stay in the crate between 

mealtimes. 

6. Once your dog is settling in the crate start to close the 

door. As soon as they finish eating open the crate door 

again. 

7. Gradually leave the crate door closed for longer after 

your dog has eaten meals/treats or a stuffed Kong. Start by 

leaving for one minute and slowly increase the time. 

8. When your dog is happy in the crate for 5 minutes with 

the door closed, start to walk away from the crate into 

another room and then come back and open the crate door. 

9. Slowly increase the time you are away from your dog by a 

minute at a time. Once your dog is happy waiting for you to 

return after a few minutes we can move onto the last stage 

in create training. 

10. Before you leave your dog in the crate overnight or to go 

to work, you need to get them used to triggers. These are 

things like closing doors, turning lights off, putting coats on 

and picking up keys. Practice doing these things whilst your 

dog is in the crate for a few days before doing it for real.

extremely stressful time for 

our pets. On average 49% of 

dogs suffer from firework 

or noise phobias in the UK 

and once the phobia has 

developed it tends to get 

worse each year. 

Common signs of noise phobia can include hiding or 

trying to find somewhere to hide, trying to escape, 

shaking, pacing, barking and chewing. 

Ways in which you can help: 

• Provide a den: create your pet a ‘safe haven’ where 

they can retreat to and hide. 

• Maintain your normal routine and act normal around 

the dog as much as possible. Stay calm. Comfort 

your dog if they want your reassurance, but do not 

force it on them. 

• Feed a high carbohydrate meal early evening before 

the fireworks start, this could be sweet potato 

mash, brown pasta or rice. 

• Walk only in the daytime, a well exercised dog will 

be less reactive. 

• Close all curtains and consider using thick black out 

curtains on main windows and doors. 

• Turn up the tv or radio to muffle some of the 

firework sounds. 

• Consider using interactive toys to mentally 

stimulate your dog during the day and while the 

fireworks are going off, toys could include Kong toys 

or a snuffle mat. 

• Give your dog the opportunity to chew. Chewing in 

dogs can be very stress relieving. 

• Consider using an Adaptil plug in. 

• Ask your veterinary surgeon for medications that 

can help your dog cope better.

Crocosmia are better known 

as montbretia and have 

often have a bad name as 

invasive plants. However, 

there are lots of choice 

varieties that are less 

spreading and worthier of 

their other common name: 

falling stars, after their 

cascades of brilliant, fiery, 

starry flowers. 

These plants come from Africa and 

can be dug up in late autumn and 

laid out to dry so that the corms 

could be stored indoors in winter if 

your soil is waterlogged in winter. 

I leave the corms in the soil as my 

garden isn’t very wet or cold. 

The plants like a moisture retentive 

soil in summer and this will give 

bigger and more flowers. 

By choosing different varieties you 

can have flowers from July to early 

October and plants from 1ft / 

30cm to 4ft / 120cm tall. 

Perhaps the most popular, tallest 

and earliest to flower is the orange 

red “Lucifer” with his pleated 

leaves and long cascades of 

flowers. He starts flowering in July 

through to the end of August. 

Lucifer is wonderful for adding 

a touch of hot colour to a more 

subdued planting. In our garden 

we have him amongst regal lilies, 

rusty foxgloves and giant oats. 

“Hellfire” is a newer version of 

this old favourite and is a little 

shorter and later to flower and has 

luscious, deep, velvety red flowers. 

Medium in height is the curiously 

coloured “Culzean Pink” – not a 

true pink but with a definite pinkish 

glow to the warm orange flowers. 

There are also short varieties 

for the front of the border like 

the pinkish orange “Limpopo”, 

deep yellow “Honey Angels” and 

“Solfatare” (which also has bronze 

leaves). These grow to about 1ft / 

30cm and their bold colours are 

the highlight lining my paths and 

patio in August and September. 

For a softer effect, there are 

some lovely pale lemon flowered 

varieties. All are very alike: 

you might find “Citronella”, 

“Sulpherea” or “Morning Light”, 

there’s not much to choose 

between them. These are 1ft 6in / 

45cm tall and flower in late August 

perhaps through to early October. 

I plant crocosmia corms in spring 

about 3-5in / 7-12cm deep and 

about 6in / 15cm apart although 

it isn’t crucial to be exact in this. 

Potted plants can be planted in spring 

or summer. 

These bright plants are easy to grow 

and invaluable for brightening up the 

garden in late summer. Keep an eye 

out for crocosmia at plant fairs in late 

summer and catch a falling star for your 

garden.

Styling wise, the all-new Jimny

combining the previous models

The driving position is certainly 

more ‘old school’ than most with 

the steering wheel close and 

passengers closer but this just 

adds to the charm and character 

of this compact off roader. There’s 

excellent visibility from your seat 

up front with a view across the 

flat and square bonnet which 

lets you keep the front corners in 

view, giving excellent visibility on 

uneven terrain and allows you 

the typically SUV higher driving 

position that we all know and 

love. 

Setting off and the Suzuki pulls 

away without drama giving you 

your first chance to appreciate 

the new 1.5L, 4 cylinder engine 

under the bonnet. Producing 

99.6 bhp at 6000 rpm and 95 Ib/ 

ft torque at 4000 rpm, this is an 

engine that suits the Jimny down 

to the ground as it produces 

more than enough power for 

reasonably rapid progress on the 

road whilst retaining enough low 

down shove for tackling those, 

shall we say, less conventional 

routes away from the tarmac. 

CO2 emissions (WLTP) of 178 g/km 

and combined efficiency figures 

of 35.8 mpg mean that, despite 

the less than aerodynamic front 

end, the Jimny will be kind to your 

pocket when visiting the pumps 

and allow for travelling further 

afield as and when the mood 

takes you. 

What Suzuki have delivered is 

one of the coolest looking cars 

of the last few years. A genuinely 

unique offering in an increasingly 

monotonous market sector and

Over the last few months we have all had to adjust 

to different ways of going about our business. Some 

have been more challenging than others. I thought 

I would share a few of my ‘first time back’s’ with you. 

First time shopping in a mask 

Face coverings are now mandatory in shops. There 

are some interesting interpretations out there, from 

toilet roll to World War 2 gas masks, I’ve seen it 

all. The chin wearers are my pet hate. Got to say, 

as someone who wears glasses and also being 

a woman of a certain age - it’s the perfect storm. 

Within a minute of hooking it on, I am a sweating, 

steamed up mess, charging blindly around the shop 

like I’m on Supermarket Sweep. I have discovered 

there’s also an art to mask removal. After my 

glasses went flying across the car park for the 

fourth time, it’s safe to say I have yet to master this 

procedure. Hats off to all the key workers who wear 

these things day in day out. 

First time back in the pub 

No matter how cold your fridge is and how beautiful 

your back garden looks, nothing can beat the 

taste of an ice-cold beer in a pub garden. Having a 

pub crawl from room to room just doesn’t cut the 

mustard and who were we kidding that a virtual pub 

night via zoom was good fun?? I was a bit nervous – 

more about getting told off for not following correct 

protocol than catching coronavirus – but I needn’t 

have worried. The pubs have got it sussed and a 

relaxing pint was had by all. In fact, it was so much 

fun we stayed for a few… 

First time back in the cinema 

Businesses across the board are having to adapt 

and innovate and our local cinema, the Bonington 

has really stepped up to the plate. Tiered seating 

has been replaced with sofa’s, armchairs and little 

tables. It really was very comfy, so much so that 

Gary actually nodded off. All we needed to complete 

the experience were a couple of footstools. Not that

I’m demanding or anything...Mind you I doubt if we 

would have left at all then. 

First time back in a restaurant 

The Banyan Tree has been a favourite of the ng 

girls for years. Gary’s birthday seemed like a good 

enough reason to go. There were enough people 

to create a great atmosphere and if it wasn’t for 

the masked staff and the new table condiment of 

hand sanitiser you really wouldn’t have known any 

difference. The evening was topped off when a 

complimentary plate of desserts, accompanied with 

a firework, was presented to a very embarrassed 

Gary. Feeling obliged to start a Happy Birthday 

singalong we all mumbled into the tablecloth, 

scoffed the pud and departed, full and happy. 

First time back in the gym 

My final first was my return to my beloved Redhill 

gym. After nearly four months away I was dreading 

it. The staff were amazing and there is cleaning 

spray everywhere. In 45 minutes I think I sprayed 

and wiped more than I do in a week at home! It’s 

dead easy, you book a slot or class, turn up and 

follow the instructions and off you go. I was a bit 

trepidatious but once I was gasping for breath on 

the treadmill my nerves vanished. Spinning classes 

have reduced numbers so a saddo like me who 

uses the same bike week in, week out, might have 

to change their routine. The screen that gives you 

all the stats isn’t there (that’s a bonus for me. Once 

I was watching the screen absolutely chuffed at 

my killer score. Top of the group...glancing round 

proudly to make sure everyone else had clocked 

it - when I realised I was looking at the wrong bike. 

On my usual bike was a great hulk of a guy pounding 

away.)

by Nottinghamshire County Council 

Residents across Nottinghamshire can save up 

to £7K on gas connection and central heating 

installation costs, with further savings on energy 

bills through the Warm Homes Hub. 

Over the next two years, eligible homeowners and 

tenants will be able to improve the warmth and comfort 

of their home and benefit from free services such as 

grid connection and first-time central heating. 

As well as improving the energy efficiency of 

the home, a warm home can see significant 

improvements in health, reducing the risk of illnesses 

and decreasing the chances of damp and mould. 

Eligible residents can also benefit from free cavity 

wall and loft insulation and see additional savings on 

their energy bills. For those struggling with a broken 

or faulty boiler, the Hub offers grants towards a 

replacement or repair. If required, a short-term loan 

of heaters is available too. 

Nottinghamshire County Council’s Growth and 

Economic Development team saw an increased 

demand for residents needing extra support during 

the Covid-19 crisis and has linked the Warm Homes 

Hub service with the Notts Covid-19 Community 

Response Hub, thus joining up the support available.

Vicky McClure, Rob.Green and the Scream Queenz 

– along with more than 5,000 viewers across 

Nottinghamshire – celebrated Pride from the 

comfort of their own homes. 

On Saturday, 25 July, Nottinghamshire Pride went 

online for the first time in its history as a result of the 

coronavirus pandemic. The show, which was hosted 

on Nottinghamshire Pride’s website and social media 

channels, saw performers and local activists come 

together in support of the region’s vibrant LGBTQ+ 

community. 

The show included performances from local artists 

such as Concrete Rose, Harlee Rosanna, Kitty Tray, 

Miss Bowie, Tash Bird and Titty, as well as a speech 

from activist Maryam Dim and a poetry recital by 

Ravelle-Sade. 

Councillor Rebecca Langton, portfolio holder for 

communities at Nottingham City Council, added: 

“While it looked a bit different than usual this 

weekend, it is nonetheless important and has given us 

an opportunity to come together online to celebrate 

the LGBTQ+ community in the city. The performances 

showcased Nottingham’s talent, energy and diversity 

– and I’ve loved watching them.”

These are the three areas you 

should focus on when making 

a healthy change. 

One of the ways I ensure all of the 

OnePoundCoaching.com members approach 

healthy change is to have these three areas 

covered within the approach. 

1. Accountability, stop wasting your effort 

and energy and not know where it is going. 

Know the plan. Have it set out so you can 

visually see this and plan it into your schedule. 

Be accountable to the food choices you make, 

know and understand what works and what 

doesn’t. It’s not a specific diet that works but 

the fact the diet you now follow has rules and 

guidelines. You have a diet already, it might just 

be that it’s not a very good one. 

2. Data Tracking, something most say they 

don’t like to do. Freedom and flexibility of choice 

is what everybody wants, but then mindless 

eating and saying I’ll begin Monday is only ever 

operating out of ZERO FEEDBACK and you’ll stay 

stuck in your current way. The numbers never lie, 

it’s fact. Tracking your exercise progress whether 

that is how much weight you lift to how good 

your cardio time looks is all feedback pointing 

you in a direction. The same goes with nutrition, 

if you do not know your calorie intake, start 

there. Get to know what works for your intake. 

Once you master that, look to MACRO nutrients 

(protein, carbs and fats). Begin to feed the body 

what it needs… not what you think you want. 

3. Intention, make your effort count. So many 

of us have good will and zero execution when 

it comes to taking action. How often do you 

intend to exercise but only really give it 50% of 

your attention? I’m not saying be that do or die 

kind of person, far from it. You should create 

enjoyment around being physically active, 

intention means do it for a reason. Give energy 

to gain energy. Just moving it’s going to be 

enough. How many times have you seen the 

same person in the gym, doing the same thing 

each week, for the past two years and still you 

hear them say… I’m not seeing any change. 

Intention was removed and complacency crept 

in. If you are going to give energy and time to 

something, make sure that something has 100% 

of your intention. 

Setting up for a comeback or making the 

decision to create a healthy impact on your life 

doesn’t have to be complicated (complicated 

sells so don’t be fooled by fancy advertising).

give, you get back. It’s the only investment you’ll 

ever make in your life that is guaranteed, so long

Time flies. It’s a cliche but it appears to be 

pretty true. It feels like only yesterday that we 

became parents and suddenly my oldest is 

about to go to high school. We’ve got used to 

being together as a family unit since April as 

we’ve pretty much followed the COVID advice, 

and now that things have relaxed somewhat 

we’re able to get out much more. Which in turn 

means that our son can escape with his mates. 

The plan this year was to get him increasing 

independence ahead of going to high school 

but the pandemic put an end to all that. He’s 

managed to stay in touch with friends as there 

is infinitely more technology than when I was a 

lad (ie. he’s got Fortnite). But it’s only recently 

that he’s started to be able to physically get 

out and see everyone. And it’s great for us as 

parents, as we get a bit of a break, but also a bit 

scary as he’s off into the wider world. 

Don’t get me wrong, he’s staying pretty local. 

He’s not heading into the inner city and we’ve 

done all the usual checks (such as triangulating 

with other parents to check our kids really are 

hanging out with who they say they are). The 

good news is that as much as we trust our son 

we have the ability to check exactly where he 

is due to his love of his phone. And here’s a 

sneaky trick for all parents, insisting they take 

their phones with them means you can track 

their movements. It’s brilliant, my wife and I 

have basically turned into Big Brother. I can’t 

wait for the day when he tells us he’s at location 

X and we can reveal that we know he’s at 

location Y. That’s the sort of situation I will look 

forward to him trying to explain his way out of 

(“I think there must be something wrong with 

your phone Dad”). Having said that, even at 

his age he’s much more tech-savvy than his 

parents so I’m sure we can’t can’t rely on this 

for long. 

Whenever he gets home he rarely goes into 

detail about what he’s been up to. I think it’s 

mostly a combination of kicking a football, 

talking about Fortnite and playing on park 

equipment. Not really much different from 

when I was a lad. Back in those days we 

kicked a football about, talked about the latest 

Commodore 64 game and hung out on the 

swings. As my mum worked full time we were 

generally encouraged to go and hang out 

with our friends in the summer, either at their 

house or outside somewhere. As I grew up on 

the Isle of Wight this was rarely dangerous. The 

worst we did was spend a few weeks playing 

on a building site completely unaware of the 

dangers. I had an entire summer holiday where 

a friend and I recreated a complete football 

World Cup in Subbuteo (for the record Wales 

beat Brazil 5-2 in the final with an Ian Rush hattrick). 

But we generally hung out on our bikes, 

wasted loads of time and spent our minimal 

amounts of pocket money on sweets and 

computer games. 

And it’s easy to look back on those times as 

golden years as they were our first taste of 

freedom from the family unit which is exactly 

what my son is experiencing now. So while it 

does scare us as parents that we have to let him 

go into the big world (especially after so many 

months of not being out), we know that it’s 

going to help him grow and gain confidence. 

And to be honest, when 

he’s out it means I can 

finally get some practise 

on Fortnite myself! 

Edging into my forties, I’m 

a wrangler of two young 

children who are either 

going to keep me eternally 

young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing 

some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible 

attempts at staying relevant!

It’s been a very busy couple of 

months for us and we have had 

some good results. But first an 

update on our priorities. 

Bike theft has increased, 

including from rear gardens which 

emphasises the need to keep bikes 

locked at all times with a suitable 

D ring opposed to a cable lock and 

ensure it is locked to something 

solid that cannot be removed. 

Our next priorities are antisocial 

behaviour and drug related crime. 

These priorities have been locally 

identified through the Crime and 

Drugs Partnership respect survey 

along with the beat team itself in 

consultation with partner agencies. 

The Prevention of Crime and ASB 

is a priority set out by the Office of 

Police and Crime Commissioner 

as well as the Youth Commission 

Priorities to seek rehabilitation 

against re-offending. 

This is what the City North beat team 

including Community protection will 

be doing to help tackle these:- 

• Target hotspot areas. 

• Encouraging reports from the 

public. 

• Work closely with partner agencies. 

• Build intelligence pictures to 

identify potential offenders and 

offer diversions. 

• Discuss tactics and give updates 

in joint agency meetings. 

• Generate and execute warrants. 

• Continue to deliver programmes 

for educational establishments and 

other vulnerable premises. 

• Use social media to give you timely 

updates. 

• Swiftly Process offenders and 

use both police and civil powers 

to hinder future activity including 

housing. 

Response officers uncovered a 

substantial cannabis grow after 

responding to a report of a burglary 

on the Edwards Lane estate on 5th 

August. A total of 118 plants and 

associated growing equipment 

were seized after being found in two 

bedrooms and the loft of a property 

in Archdale Road. The electricity 

supply to the property had also 

been by-passed. Enquiries remain 

ongoing. 

We had the knife crime team on City 

North for 2 days last month during 

which they got some amazing 

results as per below. 2 of the arrest 

were quite significant removing a 

couple of nasty weapons off our 

streets along with a significant 

amount of drugs.
