Yet as little as 20 yearsago, Thailand’s export of goods werevery low compared to the most recentlyreleased numbers.Exports of goods from Thailandinclude all movable goods includingnon-monetary gold that transfersfrom a resident to a non-resident,and usually, but not always, acrossThailand’s borders. This is distinct to“goods and services” which includesnon-tangible items.In 1995 goods exports totaledjust US$56 billion and rose to US$63THAILAND’SRELIANCE ONINTERNATIONALTOURISM REMAINSHIGHAs recently as 2018, Thailand’stourism receipts as a proportion of allits exports stood at a whopping 19.9per cent.The year before, the ratio stoodat 18.7 per cent and in the prior 12months at 17.5 per cent.Tourism receipts include all expenditureby international inboundtourists including expenditure for hotels,goods and service, mealsand internal travel. Prepayment ofservices before arrival is also included.The growth in recent years comesoff a 2005 low of just 9.4 per cent, althoughthis is still high compared tomany other countries.Between 2005 and 2009 the ratiofluctuated between 10.5 per cent and11.4 per cent before ascending rapidlyto hit 14.8 per cent in 2013.The average annual rate of increasesince 1999 has been 2.66 percent.With nearly a fifth of all exportstied to international tourism, relianceon this sector is high. Of course withthe advent of Covid19, 2020 numberswill likely see the largest dropon record, yet it is hoped that it canbe a new base with which to build upfrom again.
