HUMAN RESOURCESThe Importance of Connectionand the WorkplaceAramark Northern Europe’s HR Director, Jim O’Brien, shares with us why hebelieves that getting back into the office will evoke more creativity and growthinitiatives, and how the Facilities Management business have been a key playerin facilitating the safe return to work.The workplace is so much more thansomewhere that we sit at our desksand complete our daily tasks. Instead itis a place of socialisation, collaboration,innovation and growth. Whilst workingfrom home introduced a more flexibleworking routine to our lives, it must be saidthat being back in the office motivates us toperform at our best and enables creativecollaboration which is a real struggle wheneveryone is working remotely.Working almost exclusively throughdigital platforms like Teams and Zoomin recent months has driven unhelpfullyhigh degrees of task orientation and lessgenuine human connection. We shouldrelish the opportunity to physically connectagain and we should use that time wisely,not in going through rote tasks that can bedone remotely but by promoting debate,discussion and collaboration. We need toconnect people outside of their day-to-dayboundaries and reengage a workforcethat has spent too much time in awkwardmeetings interrupted by technicalconnection challenges and not enoughtime in dialogue.While not every person will go back to thetraditional five-day working week in theoffice, employers need to remember thevaluable role the office plays in engagingemployees and creating better productsand solutions. Work is not just about doinga series of tasks; it is about collaboratingwith others in an enjoyable and engagingway. COVID-19 has unlocked a whole newset of digitally supported solutions in thatregard, but there’s no comparison for faceto-faceinteraction.Facilities Management plays a keyrole in helping us return to workHR was perfectly placed to play a leadingrole in the office return by focusingon the principles that would rebuild acompany culture with real employeeengagement. However, this could notbe executed without the valuable roleof the Facilities Management business.Aramark Northern Europe’s FacilitiesManagement (FM) business played a keyrole in assisting the whole company toreturn to their workplaces as effectivelyand safely as possible. Whether it be fromthe Cleaning Services team ensuring thehighest standard of training and cleaningproducts are brought to the business, orthe Quality and Safety team introducingsafety protocols and procedures thatallowed us to return to work safely andsatisfied. All FM business departmentshave been working extremely hard toensure that our employees can get backto their place of work and begin to startcollaborating more creatively, with lesstechnical issues than their home offices.It has been really impressive to observehow quickly the FM business adapted theirbusiness operations within such a volatileenvironment. Aramark’s FM business werelucky to have experts within each field whoall worked tirelessly around the clock tofocus their efforts on developing innovativesolutions that allowed business operationsto continue efficiently.Going forward, Jim O’Brien hopes thatwe adjust to a “new normal”. This isn’t a healthyapproach and is economically catastrophic.However, not learning behavioural changeand adopting safety protocols is riskyand inappropriate as we have seen insome limited sectors of society. There isa sensible and vital middle ground. Weneed to adjust our behaviours and applysensible proportionate risk managementprinciples founded on facts. This is not thetime for Ireland, or indeed Europe morebroadly, to go into a form of hibernation.Office life has its ups and downs, andsome offices will require a bigger rethinkthan others, but the role of offices in postCOVID-19 corporate life might just bemore important than ever. We are humanbeings who thrive on personal interactionand, speaking from a personal level, Jim isreally looking forward to seeing more ofhis colleagues and friends at work!FM AUTUMN-WINTER 2020/21 | 29
