In this edition, we delve into somerecent projects undertaken by our EnergyServices team, who look to innovation andtechnology to reduce carbon footprint andincrease return of investment.The Energy Services team continuouslyaim to provide effective and efficientsolutions for our clients and have beenat the forefront in finding solutionsthat can be offered to businesses whowant to reduce their carbon emissionswhilst making savings. One of the mostopportune times to do this is during anend-of-life capital equipment replacement.A spotlight onhow we work:To give an example of how we canachieve savings and how we work, wetake a look at the factors involved withreplacing refrigeration systems, or chillers.When equipment reaches the end of itseconomic life, it can become unreliableand costly to maintain. The key areas ourEnergy Services team looks at is valuefor money and environmental impacts.The team conducts extensive research tosource best-in-class green solutions withthe right technology spec for the client.Some of the important items to considerare cost of ownership, refrigerant gas type,physical size, energy consumption andcarbon emissions reduction.Why is it worthwhile replacingan old model for a new one?Operating refrigeration systems createsa carbon footprint and many olderHFC refrigerants have medium-to-highglobal warming potential. Consequently,legislation and operational best practiceshave increasingly looked towards reducingthe environmental impact of these gases.A growing focus on the environmentalimpact of refrigerants is fuelling demandfor solutions that can provide satisfactorycooling performance with a lower impacton global warming. There are alsoindirect carbon emissions released whenthe refrigeration system consumes gridelectrical energy generated from powerstations. The less energy consumptiona chiller makes then, the better for theenvironment.Smart Technology -Hybrid Heat PumpThe same idea applies for boilerequipment, with the introductionof “Hybrid” heat pump technology.Hybrid heat pump technology extractsenergy from the air and uses an optimalcombination of renewable and traditionalenergy to heat a building. This ensures thehighest efficiency. Smart programmingof this technology helps to save moreenergy and substantially reduce carbonemissions compared to a traditionalboiler by automatically determiningthe most economically and energyefficient combination based on outdoortemperatures and indoor heat capacity.Undertaking and presenting a cost-benefitanalysis that demonstrates how to achieveclass-leading emissions reductions whilemaintaining the lowest cost of ownership,highlights opportunities to clients. Insteadof opting for standard replacementequipment at a standard price, clientssee the benefits of investing in energyefficiency equipment with environmentalcredentials which also produces savings.The payback to clients can also be quickerthan a standard machine investment.
