A recent study by Harvard Business School (HBS)covering 3 million people in 16 global cities found that theaverage workday for employees increased by 8.2% i.eapproximately 50 minutes during the pandemic’s earlyweeks. The study also show that employees alsoparticipated in more meetings then they did before COVID19 days. The same study also highlighted shifting to remoteworking has replaced the usual 9- to- 5 routine withworkdays where majority of the employees are not able tostick to a routine and combined with the sub optimalinfrastructure at home, it is creating stressful situation forthem.“I don’t remember – do I work at home or I live at work “SOURCE : New YorkerImpact on Productivity and ErrorsWhile the work days have become longer, some recentdiscussion with industry leaders have also suggested thatthe current scenario has had a negative impact onproductivity. According to recent news article in Bloomberg,Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan, while speaking to analystsobserved that post pandemic, productivity numbers for theemployees at JP Morgan have dropped. “WHF style seemsto have impacted younger employees and creativitycombustion has taken a hit”The issue is still being debated and organizations andemployees are stuck between hard rock and sea. Someemployees of big financial institutions in US, whoreported to work in office, recently have been infectedand tested positive for COVID 19. There is a realizationnow that WFH is going to be inevitable for a long periodof time. This means organization have to take theemployee well -being very seriously and think of waysand means to ensure employee health, engagementand productivity is given the right attention it deserves.Provide Tools and Resources forOptimal WFHOrganizations should be working to ensure they providetools and resources for employees to work from homecomfortably. Many organizations have worked with Internetservice providers to provide high speed connections toaddress last mile connectivity issues and to help employeework in a secure environment rather than using mobiledevices.Companies are also either providing lump sum money orproviding furniture- desk and chairs and appliances like UPS,MiFi devices to be used as back up to the broadbandconnection. Companies have also been providing peripheralslike Dual monitor, big screens keyboard, mice etc. to theemployees to ensure that the work environment isreplicated as much as possible and employees arecomfortable and productiveIn a crisis employeecommunication is often the thinthread that holds everyone andeverything togetherConclusionWe are in living in unprecedented times and going through a“black swan event”. Businesses are reshaping the way theydo things right from rewriting the customer playbook toadopting new technology. Risk Management teams have abig role to play in not only helping business manage throughthese turbulent times but also to ensure that they areproactively partnering with them to use this crisis asopportunity to create a more operationally resilient modeland emerge out of this crisis stronger.Power Talk l Digitalising Future
