Toy dogs comfort children in hospital
FOR HENNY van Veen,
knitting toy dogs is a labour of
love that has been bringing joy
and calm to children having
ultrasounds at Christchurch
Hospital.
Knitted by the radiographic
assistant, the toys are given
to some of the hospital’s child
patients, aged between four and
10, to help them overcome their
fears.
For some children, an ultrasound
is a traumatic experience
and receiving a cuddly toy at the
end of it makes it a bit better, van
Veen said.
“We only get happy faces
if we give them a dog or one
of the little knitted teddies
from chaplaincy service,” she
said.
Van Veen was inspired to start
knitting about 18 months ago
after seeing the small teddies
around the hospital.
“I have never done it before
in my life and learned how by
watching YouTube.”
She usually knits in the evening
while listening to music or
watching television, “just to keep
my hands busy.”
It takes her four weeks to finish
a dog, as she only knits for
about an hour a day.
“And a lot of dogs are not to
Extensive
refurbishment
carried out
•From page 1
In 2014, a team was formed to
look at all aspects of the church. A
profile document was put together
along with a refurbishment plan
which included a detailed scope
of works.
The project was made possible
by a Heritage Incentive Grant
from the city council, a Lotteries
Environment and Heritage Committee
grant, along with fundraising
by the church.
Parishioner Anne McMaster,
who has managed the project, was
“thrilled” that the parish and the
community can now enjoy better
facilities.
The refurbishment work
included extensive carpentry repairs,
repainting the exterior, refurbishment
of the interior timber
work, remedial work to the bell
tower, replacement of damaged
windows, rewiring of the church,
new heaters, lighting, altar rails
and carpet.
As part of Heritage Week, St
David’s Anglican Church will be
open to the public this Sunday
from 10.30am to 4.30pm. A short
dedication service to thank all
those who contributed to the
refurbishment will be held at
2.45pm.
