2 newsletter Message From The President & CEO Summertime and the living is easy…or, so the song says. Many of us can look back at the last couple of months and fondly remember family vacations, weekend cookouts and other relaxing days enjoying the many opportunities that summer brings. Unfortunately, for many of the clients that we serve, life’s struggles diminish the joys of summer. You probably read the news stories about a tragic triple homicide in Greensboro recently, linked to domestic violence. The incident illustrates just how much work still needs to be done to end domestic violence and to educate the public about resources available in our community (such as our domestic violence shelters, Clara House and Carpenter House) that can save a life. Every day, Family Service staff work with men, women and children threatened by violence in their own homes. You can read two examples in this newsletter. Our front page tells the story of one woman who came to Family Service to escape a long-term abusive marriage. Also, on page 5, our recent CARE Award winner Angie Parker describes how she helps clients escaping family violence through each step of the process – from the initial crisis call, to acquiring a protective court order, to referrals for counseling, shelter, or other resources. Angie exemplifies the dedication that all Family Service staff have for their clients and their safety. In countless ways each day, they help prevent the threat of violence from erupting into tragedy in the lives of the families they serve. I am excited to say that Family Service has started a new therapy group for children, aged five to seventeen, who have been exposed to violence. Research shows that for healing to begin, it is important to acknowledge the trauma and encourage children to talk about it. The new group will enable children who have been exposed to violence to become less afraid, less isolated, and feel safe again. None of the many programs Family Service offers would be possible without the support that we receive from people like you in our three communities. Our fundraisers in High Point, Greensboro and Jamestown have all broken records this year. You can read about these events throughout this newsletter. I am immensely grateful to all the volunteers who helped plan and organize such spectacular events, and all who contributed. We honestly could not do it without you and I would like to thank you on behalf of our clients and staff for your generosity. Speaking of which, I am thrilled to announce that this year’s Greensboro Greek Festival will once again support Clara House. This will be the third year the popular event has donated proceeds our shelter. I am very thankful to Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church for their continued generosity. Mark your calendars for the Greek Festival, September 16th-18th! Finally, we have an immediate need for donations of fans of all kinds. In this sweltering summer, many of our clients are without air conditioning, and a simple fan can make all the difference. Please help these families beat the summer heat by donating new or gently-used fans to Family Service. About 100 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from throughout High Point came dressed to impress for the event at High Point Country Club. Partygoers enjoyed an evening of music, food, games and fun. Sugar Bear Designs donated a stunning Oscar themed cake. Hosts wore “VIP Host” buttons and received a t-shirt as a souvenir. “We are greatly appreciative to all those who sponsored the event this year” said Event Chair Stephanie Beaver. "The kids look forward to the party each year and it is a great way for them to be involved in an event that helps the community." Their shopping trips for the shelter gave us just about everything on our wish list!” Meanwhile, employees from Syngenta Crop Protection gave their time to create a raised container garden at Carpenter House. Volunteers planted fresh vegetables including tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, pumpkin, and basil. “It was hot, but everyone worked hard and we had fun working together,” said Syngenta’s Ruhi Rezaaiyan. “Together, these projects have greatly improved the overall look and feel of the shelters,” said DeTiere. “We are extremely grateful to BB&T and Syngenta volunteers for generously giving their time to make the shelters a more homelike environment for resident women and their children.”
Greensboro Oyster Roast : Biggest and Best Ever The Greensboro Oyster Roast on April 29 wasn’t just a terrific party; it was the largest and most successful fundraiser Family Service of the Piedmont has ever had. A record turnout of 720 guests enjoyed the food, music and festivities at Bonnie and Bynum Hunter’s home. Around the large tents provided by Grand Rental Station, attendees ate oysters on the lawn and other edibles from Pepper Moon Catering, enjoyed the company of friends around the beautiful candlelit swimming pool, shopped for jewelry on display by Schiffman’s (who donated a portion of their sales all that weekend) or danced the night away to the music of The Magnificents. The event surpassed all expectations and raised proceeds of more than $141,000 to support programs of Family Service in Greensboro. Oyster Roast Co-Chairs Kim Holleman and Daniela Helms thanked the Hunters for playing host to the event. “The Oyster Roast was successful because Bonnie and Bynum Hunter so generously shared their beautiful property – the pool, gazebo, paved areas and lawn,” Helms said. “The location was a big part of our success,” agreed Holleman. “Another was the wonderful level of corporate sponsorship – we had so many people ▲ Event Chairs Daniela Helms and Kim Holleman, Honorary Chair Shirley Spears, and home host Bonnie McElveen-Hunter ▲ Peggy Johnson and Betty Nichols willing to go the sponsor route.” Holleman particularly thanked honorary chair Shirley Spears for her part in helping to marshal support. “We are so grateful to Shirley. Her involvement was key to our incredible level of success this year,” she said. “We were so fortunate to have a dedicated group leading our fundraising efforts, not to mention the generosity of our donors especially during a tough economy,” added Helms. In particular, Grand Rental Station who donated the tents and furnishings. “They really helped create an attractive and high-quality feel to the evening,” she noted.
