Family Service of the Piedmont staff selected
Crisis Intervention Advocate Angela Parker
to receive the agency’s C.A.R.E. Award on
May 13. The award is given to staff members
who exemplify Family Service’s Core
Values: Customers, co-workers and community
Are always Respected, empowered, and
receive quality service Every time.
Parker’s clients are victims of domestic violence,
sexual assault, or other violent crime,
who come to the Family Service office or
call the agency’s 24-hour Crisis Line. As
she explains her typical day: “If a victim calls
seeking to file a restraining order, I meet
them at the clerk’s office and file the paper-
U.S. Congressman Mel Watt visited Family Service’s Fairview Family
Resource Center August 9th as part of his “Trading Places” program.
The program involves Watt taking on the jobs of his constituents to get
a better idea of what’s happening in the 12th Congressional District.
The congressman assisted with the daily work of FFRC Education Coordinator
LaMonica Mitchell, and paid a visit to the Southside Community
Garden located at the center. !

work. I provide court accompaniment for
the ex parte hearing. I walk the client over
to the Sheriff’s Department to have the restraining
order served. There I explain services
offered at Family Service, as well as
other services and resources in the community.”
Parker’s co-workers in the agency’s Victim
Services division called her service “outstanding.”
“She serves clients all day Monday
through Friday to make sure they are
safe, treated with compassion, and provided
the most appropriate service referral possible,”
they said. “She is often found going
above and beyond to ensure a client has access
to safety, and is awesome with making
detailed safety plans with clients, with the
outcome meaning they can find safer homes
and families.” -
Presenting the award, Family Service President
& CEO Tom Campbell praised Parker’s
conscientiousness in ensuring her clients’
safety and ability to access services. On one
occasion, the only safe time for a client to
meet was on Saturdays. Another could only
meet safely at her doctor’s office. Parker
went out of her way to meet these clients at
the time and place that was safest for them,
Campbell said.
“Angie is naturally professional and caring,”
her co-workers continued. “She has a positive
attitude that radiates to staff and clients.
She is constantly striving for justice for her
clients, and for the client to feel empowered.”
“I’ve always felt that if you can help someone,
then you have an obligation to do so,”
Parker says. “Family Service of the Piedmont
can provide a variety of services that can
help anyone.”
Thanks to Premier Federal Credit Union for their second annual hot dog sale
benefitting Family Service. Volunteers sold hot dogs throughout the day July
15th in Downtown Greensboro. The event raised $2,000!

Family Service of the Piedmont
and the Greensboro
community were saddened
to learn of the passing
of David Edmond
Wesley Schlosser, son of
Rebecca and Mike
Schlosser, this June 2 at the
age of 25.
David recently graduated
from Elon University (Class of 2011), with a
BS in Computer Science, and a minor in Psychology
and Mathematics. Previously, David
attended Greensboro Day School where he
was co-captain of the wrestling team and a
member of the National Honor Society.
David will be remembered as a loving and
caring son and brother. Although he struggled
with bipolar disorder, he lived life to the
fullest, enjoying a wide array of friends and a
zeal for music and computers. He celebrated
life with enthusiasm, gratitude and optimism.
David's non-judgmental outlook combined
with his unwavering loyalty made him
a friend to everyone.
