to receive <strong>the</strong> agency’s C.A.R.E. Award on<br />

May 13. The award is given to staff members<br />

who exemplify <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong>’s Core<br />

Values: Customers, co-workers and community<br />

Are always Respected, empowered, and<br />

receive quality service Every time.<br />

Parker’s clients are victims <strong>of</strong> domestic violence,<br />

sexual assault, or o<strong>the</strong>r violent crime,<br />

who come to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice or<br />

call <strong>the</strong> agency’s 24-hour Crisis Line. As<br />

she explains her typical day: “If a victim calls<br />

seeking to file a restraining order, I meet<br />

<strong>the</strong>m at <strong>the</strong> clerk’s <strong>of</strong>fice and file <strong>the</strong> paper-<br />

U.S. Congressman Mel Watt visited <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong>’s Fairview <strong>Family</strong><br />

Resource Center August 9th as part <strong>of</strong> his “Trading Places” program.<br />

The program involves Watt taking on <strong>the</strong> jobs <strong>of</strong> his constituents to get<br />

a better idea <strong>of</strong> what’s happening in <strong>the</strong> 12th Congressional District.<br />

The congressman assisted with <strong>the</strong> daily work <strong>of</strong> FFRC Education Coordinator<br />

LaMonica Mitchell, and paid a visit to <strong>the</strong> Southside Community<br />

Garden located at <strong>the</strong> center. !<br />

work. I provide court accompaniment for<br />

<strong>the</strong> ex parte hearing. I walk <strong>the</strong> client over<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Sheriff’s Department to have <strong>the</strong> restraining<br />

order served. There I explain services<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered at <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong>, as well as<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r services and resources in <strong>the</strong> community.”<br />

Parker’s co-workers in <strong>the</strong> agency’s Victim<br />

<strong>Service</strong>s division called her service “outstanding.”<br />

“She serves clients all day Monday<br />

through Friday to make sure <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

safe, treated with compassion, and provided<br />

<strong>the</strong> most appropriate service referral possible,”<br />

<strong>the</strong>y said. “She is <strong>of</strong>ten found going<br />

above and beyond to ensure a client has access<br />

to safety, and is awesome with making<br />

detailed safety plans with clients, with <strong>the</strong><br />

outcome meaning <strong>the</strong>y can find safer homes<br />

and families.” -<br />

Presenting <strong>the</strong> award, <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong> President<br />

& CEO Tom Campbell praised Parker’s<br />

conscientiousness in ensuring her clients’<br />

safety and ability to access services. On one<br />

occasion, <strong>the</strong> only safe time for a client to<br />

meet was on Saturdays. Ano<strong>the</strong>r could only<br />

meet safely at her doctor’s <strong>of</strong>fice. Parker<br />

went out <strong>of</strong> her way to meet <strong>the</strong>se clients at<br />

<strong>the</strong> time and place that was safest for <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

Campbell said.<br />

“Angie is naturally pr<strong>of</strong>essional and caring,”<br />

her co-workers continued. “She has a positive<br />

attitude that radiates to staff and clients.<br />

She is constantly striving for justice for her<br />

clients, and for <strong>the</strong> client to feel empowered.”<br />

“I’ve always felt that if you can help someone,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n you have an obligation to do so,”<br />

Parker says. “<strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Piedmont</strong><br />

can provide a variety <strong>of</strong> services that can<br />

help anyone.”<br />

Thanks to Premier Federal Credit Union for <strong>the</strong>ir second annual hot dog sale<br />

benefitting <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong>. Volunteers sold hot dogs throughout <strong>the</strong> day July<br />

15th in Downtown Greensboro. The event raised $2,000!<br />

community were saddened<br />

to learn <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> passing<br />

<strong>of</strong> David Edmond<br />

Wesley Schlosser, son <strong>of</strong><br />

Rebecca and Mike<br />

Schlosser, this June 2 at <strong>the</strong><br />

age <strong>of</strong> 25.<br />

David recently graduated<br />

from Elon University (Class <strong>of</strong> 2011), with a<br />

BS in Computer Science, and a minor in Psychology<br />

and Ma<strong>the</strong>matics. Previously, David<br />

attended Greensboro Day School where he<br />

was co-captain <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wrestling team and a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Honor Society.<br />

David will be remembered as a loving and<br />

caring son and bro<strong>the</strong>r. Although he struggled<br />

with bipolar disorder, he lived life to <strong>the</strong><br />

fullest, enjoying a wide array <strong>of</strong> friends and a<br />

zeal for music and computers. He celebrated<br />

life with enthusiasm, gratitude and optimism.<br />

David's non-judgmental outlook combined<br />

with his unwavering loyalty made him<br />

a friend to everyone.<br />
