Message from the Greensboro Foundation Chair Lynne Gladstone Outgoing Chair, Family Service of Greensboro Foundation Born/grew up: Fork Church, NC Lived in Greensboro’s Fisher Park Historic District since 1980 Family: two cats, Jeremiah and Hazel Mary Agnes Gladstone Other community involvement: Dolley Madison Women’s Club; GFWC-NC One person can make a difference. You never know when something you say or do will make a profound change in the life of someone who is secretly hurting or afraid. This is why our work with Family Service of the Piedmont is so crucial, for we offer children and families in need concrete programs, support, and tools for change to build healthier, happier, and safer lives. This year, the Clara House and Carpenter House Shelters for battered women and their children, our Children’s Advocacy Centers for sexually abused children, our in-home Family Preservation program, the 24-hour crisis line, Domestic Violence Intervention Program for batterers, and Healthy Start were all programs which faced reduced services due to funding cuts. Thanks to countless volunteer hours, we broke Greensboro’s fundraising records and were political activists at a crucial time in continuing the work of Family Service. Next year will be another critical time, and you are needed! As a twenty-year volunteer for the Agency, the opportunity to serve as the 2010-2011 Chair of Family Service of Greensboro Foundation was a joy and a blessing. I am grateful for the commitment, generosity, and open hearts of each Foundation Trustee, Guild member, and the many fund-raising and friend-raising volunteers and sponsors who made this year of need a tremendous success. At each meeting, I challenged all to act boldly with Enthusiasm, Passion, and Responsibility and to be daily ambassadors for Family Service. Thank you for your work and for living this challenge. Even in this tough economic climate, High Point truly supported Family Service. In my opinion, that is the beauty of the High Point community: the generosity of this community continually amazes me. I would put High Point up against any city in the country in per capita charitable giving. You can see a physical example in the recently renovated lobby of Family Service’s Slane Center, thanks to the folks at Furnitureland South. This type of charity in High Point is the rule rather than the exception. Under the direction of Linda and Tim Ilderton, the High Point Oyster Roast was one of the most successful ever. Frosty and Catharine Culp were kind enough to host one of High Point’s best parties. It was a great tribute to our Honorary Chairs, Lin and Nancy Amos, who are also responsible for starting the Oyster Roast years ago. With these folks behind you, you can only be successful. A big thank you also needs to go out to Emilee Brigman and Amanda Covington. High Point has been working very hard to lay the groundwork for a successful Guild. This year we made some great strides to raise awareness and funds with events like Lights of Love and a Middle School Party. Watch this group under Julie Andrews and Natalie Norcross. There are some really great things coming. My passion for Family Service burns brighter today than ever. Six years ago, when I decided to take a more active role in Family Service, I was already a firm believer in this agency. I have since been amazed and delighted to witness the powerful impact Family Service has on our community. I don’t think people understand how diverse Family Service is. Unfortunately, people typically find their way to Family Service at the low point of their lives. This outstanding agency helps people get their lives back on track with dignity intact.
