Protecting
heritage
gets boost
EFFORTS TO protect the history
of 12 of the district’s heritage
properties have received a boost
through the council’s heritage fund.
Building repairs, maintenance
and a project to safely preserve
historical artefacts will all be supported,
with the fund awarding up
to $39,000 towards the projects.
Keeping the district’s heritage
alive is a big undertaking, which
the council supports through funding
and through the district plan,
which identifies heritage buildings,
structures, sites and trees and sets
the rules for their preservation.
Selwyn has experienced several
waves of settlement by Māori and
European. As a result there are sites,
buildings and structures in our
district which are of cultural or historic
value to individuals, families,
iwi, rūnanga and communities.
The Proposed Selwyn District
Plan updates the list of heritage
buildings and notable trees as well
as identifying and including new
rules to recognise and protect sites
and areas of significance to Māori.
For more information about how
the proposed district plan plans to
protect heritage items and how to
make a submission, visit the district
plan page. Submissions are open
until 5pm Friday, December 11.
Last November, a new officer
in uniform introduced himself
to Ward. He was one of the
boys he coached and said Ward
inspired him to join the police.
Said Ward: “My goal was always
to be involved with youth
and make a difference in young
people’s lives.
“To spend a little bit of time
and money on young people at
that age, then it prevents them
going into the justice system
later on and we all know that it’s
Recognition for supporting youth
close to $90,000 a year to have
one prisoner imprisoned.
“If the police can break
down those barriers and look
at the whole restorative justice
approach to youth so that they
get that chance . . . the whole
country’s on a winner,” he said.
Ward said being recognised
as a local hero is a great feeling
but he sees it as an award for the
many police and volunteers who
dedicate their time to Blue Light
and supporting youth.
“There’s no way I could have
ever done this without the team
at Blue Light as supporters.”
He estimates he has worked
with about 60 police officers and
many more volunteers during
his time with Blue Light.
“I’ve been awarded and that’s
great, but do you know what, it’s
an award for Blue Light and the
community organisation.”
His daughters Sarah and
Charlotte and wife Pam are
proud of the recognition.
“They’re over the moon and
they’ve grown up with police,
so I think that they’re as proud
This year, Westfield Riccarton
had the most number of people
vote in the local hero awards
than any other Westfield mall in
Australia and New Zealand.
