Armistice Day service<br />
draws agood turnout<br />

Last week’s Armistice Day commemoration<br />
service provided the first opportunity for<br />
the Rangiora RSA to gather with the<br />
community this year.<br />
Rangiora RSA president Ian Thompson<br />
was pleasedwith the turnout at the<br />
Rangiora Cenotaph on Wednesday,<br />
<strong>November</strong> 11.<br />
AnzacDay services in April had been<br />
cancelled because of Covid<strong>19</strong>.<br />
Armistice Day marks the trucethat came<br />
into effect at 11am on <strong>November</strong> 11, <strong>19</strong>18,<br />
and saw soldierslay downtheir arms,<br />
putting an end to fighting on the western<br />
frontduring World War 1.<br />
In his address, Salvation Army band<br />
master Bill Peck saidthe fouryearwar<br />
resulted in ninemillion soldiers dying and<br />

21 millionbeingwounded,aswell as tens of<br />

‘‘We can live in hopethat by<br />
remembering them we may save lives in the<br />
future.’’<br />
WaimakaririMayor Dan Gordonsaid<br />
100,000New Zealanders foughtinthe war<br />
from apopulation of around 1.1 million.<br />
‘‘Many never returned and others were<br />
deeply affected.’’<br />
Mr Gordon recalled his experience of<br />
attending the 100th anniversary<br />
commemorations of the Battle of<br />
Passchendaele in Belgiumin2017.<br />
At least seven Waimakaririsoldierslost<br />
their lives at Passchendaele in <strong>19</strong>17, he<br />
said.<br />
‘‘I will neverforget the hospitality of the<br />
local people. The Belgians have not<br />
forgotten.’’<br />

Kingsford Kitchen Cafe, at<br />
Southbrook, Rangiora,has closed<br />
and is on the market. However, its<br />
manufacturing and cateringkitchen<br />
next door remains in full swing, a<br />
