it safer and easier for people of<br />

all ages to get around the city by<br />

bike so it is really heartening to<br />

hear about how the cycleways<br />

are making people re-think their<br />

transport options.’’<br />

<strong>The</strong> survey<br />

covered topics<br />

such as<br />

trip-purpose,<br />

cycling frequency,<br />

mode<br />

of transport<br />

prior to cycling,<br />

cycleway<br />

influence on<br />

participation<br />

and safety and<br />

comfort perceptions.<br />

<strong>The</strong> largest individual age<br />

group of respondents were those<br />

aged between 35 and 49-yearsold,<br />

representing 30 per cent of<br />

the results.<br />

Overall, nearly 60 per cent<br />

said they ride at least five times a<br />

week, and more than 80 per cent<br />

twice a week for work, education,<br />

meeting friends and family, or for<br />

fitness purposes.<br />

Cyclists have also reported that<br />

they feel safer on the road – in<br />

<strong>2020</strong>, 92 per cent agreed that the<br />

cycleways improved safety, which<br />

was a decrease from 94 per cent<br />

in 2018.<br />

However, safety was still a<br />

concern. Many described being<br />

knocked from their bikes due<br />

approaching intersections.<br />

“Safety is still a concern for<br />

some. As part of the survey, we<br />

received lots of comments about<br />

the behaviour of drivers and the<br />

constant need for people cycling<br />

to be vigilant around cars,” said<br />

Thomas.<br />

“Whether you are going by bike<br />

or by car, we all need to take care<br />

on the roads and keep an eye out<br />

for other road users.”<br />
