PEGASUS POST Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Thursday November 26 2020 3 Leash dogs on beach DOG OWNERS are being reminded that beaches are off-limits to unleashed dogs on summer days. “We know many people enjoy playing with their dogs at the beach and they can still do that, but they need to steer clear of the main swimming areas or go early in the morning or in the evening,’’ city council animal services manager Mark Vincent said. “Between 9am and 7pm unleashed dogs are banned from specified areas of our swimming beaches because people who have come to the beach to have a splash in the sea or to make sandcastles with their kids don’t want lots of dog running around. “Although dogs are prohibited at these beaches between 9am and 7pm, dog owners can walk their dogs through these beaches as long as they are only passing through and they keep their dog on a short leash.” At Spencer Park, Waimairi, as well as North and South New Brighton beaches, dogs are prohibited for 100m either side of the surf lifesaving clubs’ pavilions. At New Brighton beach dogs are prohibited for a distance of a 100m in a northerly direction of the surf lifesaving club’s pavilion RESPONSIBLE: Dogs are off-limits on parts of some beaches this summer unless they are on a lead. to a point 100m south of the pier. “We have a big coastline so there is still many kilometres of beach where dog owners can have fun with their pets over the summer. Just remember you need to keep your dog under effective control and clean up after them if needed,” Vincent said. The beaches where the daytime ban applies include the beach at Cass Bay, Corsair Bay, Sandy Bay, Paradise Bay, Hays Bay, Diamond Harbour, Purau, Akaroa, French Farm, Le Bons Bay, Little Akaloa, Okains Bay, Port Levy and Tikao Bay. At Sumner beach dogs are prohibited for a distance of 100m north of the Sumner Surf Lifesaving Club’s pavilion through to Cave Rock. At Taylor’s Mistake beach dogs are prohibited for a distance of 50m either side of the surf lifesaving club pavilion. Funding options sought • From page 1 The city council received 58 submissions regarding the matter. Shirley Recreational Walkers leader Sue Lang wants to see the centre reinstated and feared it might not happen after the rebuild was deferred for a number of years. “I would like to see the Shirley Community Centre reinstated back at this site as we were led to believe it would be happening back in 2017,” Lang said in her submission. “It is on a great bus route and was used by many groups both day and night. Other areas have had their community centres rebuilt, but not Shirley. Why?” Prior to the September 4, 2010, and February 22, 2011, earthquakes, the well-established centre was used by many community groups to host workshops, classes and fun activities. Due to the building’s damage caused by the earthquakes, the facility was demolished in 2012 and has not been replaced since, in spite of the area’s growing population. While re-development options were being explored, a temporary pump track and a table tennis facility were recently installed after a young member of the community had an idea to temporarily utilise the space. Mairehau resident Joanne Byrne used to use the former community centre and lives less than 1km away from the site. “We don’t need nor want temporary activities, we want a community centre,” she said. “I would like to see a community hub – a combined library and community centre with additional community facilities, like a permanent pump track and bathrooms for all to use.” But Richmond Residents and Business Association president Vicki Brown disagreed with a need to rebuild the centre. “We don’t need a community centre built back here, Shirley are having great success with their facility in MacFarlane Park,” she said. “We would like to see more recreational items added with more updated play equipment, and an opportunity to grow the community garden.” Other suggestions being floated around included adding communal barbecues, a food forest for foraging, and keeping it as an open space for planting and walking. The community board was currently looking at alternative funding options and possible partnerships with organisations.
