RESIDENTS ARE being asked to 

share their ideas on how to make 

Halswell Rd a better place for bus 

users. 

The New Zealand Transport 

Agency has a $25 million budget 

to provide bus lanes along the 

2.5km section of the road that 

runs between Curletts and Hoon 

Hay Rds, past Aidanfield to 

Dunbars Rd. 

It is an area of the city that has 

experienced rapid residential 

growth in recent years with new 

subdivisions opening, resulting in 

increased congestion. 

Director of regional 

relationships Jim Harland 

said Halswell Rd is a key 

public transport corridor that 

experiences significant travel 

delays during peak periods. 

“We are wanting to achieve 

faster and more reliable travel 

times for buses along Halswell 

Rd. The project aims to 

improve safety, comfort and the 

convenience of getting to and 

using bus stops,” he said.

Pavers to reflect cultural significance 

EELS AND whitebait will be 

wriggling across Woolston 

Village, etched into new 

pavers to illustrate the cultural 

significance of the area. 

The sandblasted pavers are 

integral to a multimillion-dollar 

upgrade for the community 

village. 

The tuna (eel) and īnaka 

(whitebait) pavers will sit at 

intersections where the side 

street run towards the Heathcote 

River. 

The design and supply is 

expected to cost $44,000, with 

a total cost of $160,000 towards 

the installation of the footpath 

paving. 

Council planning and delivery 

transport manager Lynette Ellis 

says the “decorative elements 

reinforce the close connection 

between Ferry Rd and the 

river, reminding people of its 

presence”. 

Tuna and īnaka live in the 

Heathcote River, which is also 

home to īnaka spawning sites. 

“We have worked with 

Matapopore to develop the 

concept for the pavers and 

commissioned Ngāi Tahu 

artist Morgan Mathews-Hale 

to develop the design,” Ms Ellis 

says. 

“The pavers have been formed

Halswell pool 

to stay open 

for longer 

A $22,000 funding boost will 

allow Halswell’s Te Hāpua 

summer pool to remain open for 

longer on weekdays. 

The extra funding was approved 

by the Halswell-Hornby- 

Riccarton Community Board, 

which means from next month, 

the pool can open at 9.30am daily, 

instead of 11.30am. 

It also enables them to close at 

8pm close Fridays, rather than 

7pm. 

The pool will be open to 

concession-card holders for lane 

swimming on Tuesdays and Fridays, 

from 6.30am to 9.30am. 

Board Chairperson Mike Mora 

said that with both the main pool 

and the wave pool at the Pioneer 

Recreation and Sports Centre 

out of action because of essential 

maintenance, there is likely to 

be more people flocking to Te 

Hāpua. 

“We need to remain agile in 

meeting local needs and the extra 

funding is an important investment 

in providing recreational 

facilities to a wider community,” 

said Mora. 

The $22,090 Discretionary 

Response Fund grant will cover 

the extra operational costs of the

Community garden to stay for now

A GARDEN that has been an 

integral part of Riccarton for 

more than seven years is set to 

remain in the community for 

now. 

The future of the Riccarton 

West Community Garden was 

stuck in limbo after its closure in 

September when the lease for the 

land came to an end. 

But it has since re-opened on 

Peverel St after a compromise 

was struck with landowner, 

Kāinga Ora, which will allow the 

garden to continue flourishing 

for the next two years. 

The Christchurch South 

Community Gardens Trust now 

manages the space, which has 

been downsized to make way 

for new public housing due to be 

built soon.

access.

Leash your dogs when walking on beaches 

DOG OWNERS are being 

reminded that beaches are 

off-limits to unleashed dogs on 

summer days. 

“We know many people enjoy 

playing with their dogs at the 

beach and they can still do that, 

but they need to steer clear of 

the main swimming areas or go 

early in the morning or in the 

evening,’’ city council animal 

services manager Mark Vincent 

said. 

“Between 9am and 7pm 

unleashed dogs are banned 

from specified areas of our 

swimming beaches because 

people who have come to the 

beach to have a splash in the 

sea or to make sandcastles with 

their kids don’t want lots of dog 

running around. 

“Although dogs are prohibited 

at these beaches between 9am 

and 7pm, dog owners can walk 

their dogs through these beaches 

as long as they are only passing 

through and they keep their dog 

on a short leash.” 

At Spencer Park, Waimairi, 

as well as North and South New 

Brighton beaches, dogs are 

prohibited for 100m either side 

of the surf lifesaving clubs’ 

pavilions. 

At New Brighton beach dogs 

are prohibited for a distance of a 

100m in a northerly direction of 

the surf lifesaving club’s pavilion 

to a point 100m south of the pier. 

“We have a big coastline so 

there is still many kilometres 

of beach where dog owners can 

have fun with their pets over 

the summer. Just remember you 

need to keep your dog under 

effective control and clean up 

after them if needed,” Vincent 

said. 

The beaches where the daytime 

ban applies include the 

beach at Cass Bay, Corsair Bay, 

Sandy Bay, Paradise Bay, Hays 

Bay, Diamond Harbour, 

Purau, Akaroa, French Farm,

Gardeners urged to save water during summer 

THE GARDEN city’s head 

gardener is urging residents to 

be mindful of their outdoor 

water use this summer so the 

city’s water supply network 

doesn’t come under too much 

pressure. 

Botanic Gardens director Wolfgang 

Bopp is part of this year’s 

“Water like you oughta” campaign, 

which encourages people 

to think carefully about how and 

when they water their gardens. 

“Sprinklers and garden irrigation 

systems use the most 

household water, so we’re asking 

people to check how long they’re 

watering for and when they’re 

watering,” Bopp says. 

“Leaving a sprinkler on for 

too long in the heat of the day or 

when it’s windy can waste hundreds 

of litres of water, and many 

sprinklers aren’t very accurate. 

“Most gardens just need a few 

minutes of water in the cool of 

the early morning or late evening. 

Hand-held watering with a hose 

or watering can is the most accurate, 

plus it can be very relaxing 

– and we could all do with a bit 

more of that this year.” 

Bopp says setting up a water 

timer is the next best solution. 

“Some people may have a builtin 

irrigation system or a sprinkler 

permanently in place in their garden. 

Setting these up with a timer 

on your tap for a few minutes of 

watering overnight means your 

plants can be hydrating while 

you’re sleeping.” 

In summertime the household 

demand for water in Christchurch 

generally doubles compared with 

winter, mostly because of people 

watering their gardens and lawns. 

During peak demand in the early 

evenings, parts of the city may 

use water faster than the network 

can pump it and fill the reservoirs, 

leading to supply issues and 

reduced pressure, which can also 

have an impact on firefighting. 

When that happens, city council 

has to impose water restrictions to 

ensure the safety and continuity of 

the water supply. 

Bopp says making small changes 

to watering habits can add up 

to a big difference for the city.

if any, and there’s no real reason to 

be watering roadside berms. Grass 

is tougher than most people think. 

If it does turn brown over summer, 

it‘ll go green again in autumn.” 

Bopp says while the Botanic 

Gardens has its own private well, 

which is independent from the 

city’s water supply network, over 

the past few years it has been 

expanding its irrigation system to 

do as much watering at nighttime 

as possible. 

“We’ll be doing whatever 

we can to support the water 

conservation campaign, including 

more automatic irrigation in 

the gardens. In my own garden 

at home, I’m going to install a 

water-saving drip irrigator for 

my collection of pot plants. We 

all need to pitch in and do what 

we can this summer, because it’s 

forecast to be very warm and dry.”

Gala to start Halswell Xmas celebrations 

OAKLANDS Te Kura o Ōwaka’s 

annual gala will begin a series of 

activities to celebrate Halswell 

and replace regular celebrations 

cancelled due to Covid-19. 

The school’s twilight gala will 

be held on December 11 from 

5pm. 

The following day is celebrate 

Halswell family fun day. Held at 

the Te Hapua Halswell Centre, 

the event will run from 10am to 

3pm and include crafts, games, 

a Christmas story time, robots, 

a photobooth, and virtual reality 

technology for people to try. 

Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka’s 

parent teacher association organises 

its annual gala. 

PTA member Karen White 

said the year had been a challenging 

one for many people 

and bringing the community 

together to connect and have fun 

was a focus of the gala. It would 

be a chance for pupils to perform 

songs and dances for their 

families, and for people to get 

something to eat and catch up 

with each other.

gala was part of a series of activities 

for locals to enjoy in the

“We love seeing our community

school and see changes from its 

major redevelopment. 

The redevelopment included 

a number of new learning and 

administration spaces and the 

upgrade of original red brick 

blocks. The redevelopment 

would be completed by early 

2021, with the school’s hall getting 

an upgrade and the addition 

of a new central courtyard and 

sports courts, she said.

from when the Act was passed 

to allow time for settlors, 

trustees and advisors to 

familiarise themselves with the 

changes and requirements and 

review their trust is nearly up.

gather these deeds and records.

one trustee must hold all the 

trust documents, including 

records of assets, minutes 

and financial records. For 

some existing trusts those 

documents might be missing,

are a beneficiary and who the 

trustees are) must be made

presumption as to the supply 

of information is qualified by

Many family trusts were set up with a 

wide class of beneficiaries including 

the nieces and nephews and partners of 

beneficiaries in addition to the settlors 

and their children and grandchildren. It 

may never have been intended that most 

of these beneficiaries would ever receive 

a benefit under the trust but they were

Ali McGregor has rolled her passions for Italy 

and lemons into her business, Ali’s Lemons. Her 

love for creating delectable recipes of lemon based 

desserts, liquor, and curds have patrons around the 

country enjoying her products. 

A Cantabrian local, Ali has a diversified 

background, which enhances her love for being in 

the kitchen and creating lemon masterpieces.

background and where her love 

for lemons came from? 

Growing up on a Wairarapa farm, the kitchen of 

Ali’s family home was the hub of the farm and the 

home, the place where family, friends, visitors, and 

workers all gathered and shared food together. 

Meals were prepared from produce grown on the 

farm. 

Morning and afternoon teas have always been 

symbols of country hospitality. On the farm, 

an array of freshly made treats along with iced 

cakes and biscuits from the twenty-plus regularly 

replenished cake tins, welcomed all visitors. 

Ali learned how to cook by osmosis: by 

watching and helping, and as she became more 

accomplished and confident, making the timetested 

recipes handed down from generation to 

generation. For Ali, food and friendship continue 

to be intertwined: preparing delicious food to 

share gives great satisfaction. Consequently, she 

made a career shift to include teaching food and 

nutrition as well as English. 

A life-long fascination with Italy has grown from 

singing Italian opera and enjoying Italian art and 

architecture. She learned the language and many 

Italian cities including Italy to Venice, Rome, 

Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast, Le Marche, the Cinque 

Terre. 

Against this background, the devastating 

Christchurch earthquakes of 2011 that forced 

many to re-evaluate their lives, were also the 

catalyst for Ali to establish Ali’s Lemons. Her range 

of products draws on her experiences, and belief 

that food sustains not only the body and soul but is 

also a celebration of life and love. 

Ingredients are everything 

Locally sourced ingredients including organic, 

Yen Ben lemons are the foundation product which 

offers the sharp, tart flavour. Yen Ben are a true 

lemon, unlike the much sweeter Meyer lemon 

which is the most prolific lemon grown in the 

Canterbury region. 

Free range eggs are used in the curds and saffron 

from Wynyard Estate which uses the international 

standard of quality and is premium grade 1. 

Green Bee Honeydew is used in both the Lemon 

Honeydew Reviver and the Lemon Caramelised 

Onion. 

how do you spend your down 

time? 

I love music, particularly classical and opera, has 

been a passion all my life. I studied singing at 

Victoria University and then moved to Auckland 

to study with Dame Sister Mary Leo and then was 

a singer and I still love to sing. 

I love reading and belong to a book group, 

working in my working and travelling. 

what is your earliest memory of 

lemons ? 

Growing up on the farm in the Wairarapa, there 

was an enormous lemon tree which grew right 

up against my bedroom window and on warm 

evenings the delicious perfume of the waxy 

blossoms filled my room, perhaps this was the 

beginning of my love affair with lemons !

Biotech is improving everyday life without 

most Kiwis realising, a new BioTechNZ 

research report says. 

The landmark BioTechNZ study analysed 

the state of biotechnology and its impact and 

benefits for the New Zealand economy and 

society. 

BioTechNZ is a member of the NZTech 

Alliance, which brings together 20 technology 

associations with more than 1500 member 

organisations who employ more than 10 

percent of the workforce, who are working to 

help create a more prosperous New Zealand 

underpinned by technology. 

NZTech chief executive Graeme Muller says 

the report, due for public release this month, 

captures the major impact that biotechnology 

is quietly having on all Kiwis. 

“Biotechnology is being applied in New 

Zealand to reduce waste, create vaccines, 

develop healthier food and more efficient 

crops,” Muller says. 

“One of New Zealand’s largest companies used 

biotechnology to develop milk with the A2 

protein only, to help people who have trouble 

drinking regular cow’s milk. 

“Another growing New Zealand success story 

is a company that uses biotechnology processes 

to extract gold and other precious metals from 

electronic waste. 

“While Kiwi families are concerned about 

the enormous use of petroleum products 

for energy, new plastics are coming into the 

home, made with corn and other plants, not 

petroleum, via a biotechnology processes. 

“Biotechnology is also being applied in 

more direct ways to environmental cleanup. 

A process called bioremediation uses 

microorganisms to reduce, eliminate, or 

contain contaminants in the soil or other 

environments. 

“As obesity rates climb to epidemic levels, 

biotechnology is helping to create a new 

generation of healthier plant-based oils. These 

oils are free of the trans fats that can raise 

cholesterol and contribute to heart disease. 

Soybeans, corn, cotton and canola have 

been enhanced to resist insects, herbicides 

and drought conditions, allowing farmers to 

increase productivity. 

“New Zealand scientists have developed grasses 

that reduce methane emissions from livestock, 

which will help reduce greenhouse gases. 

“Tomorrow, biotechnology will bring better 

health and treatments for disease that will 

produce all kinds of medical products for New 

Zealanders. 

“There are a growing number of global 

opportunities for biotech and New Zealand’s 

strengths allow scientists and companies to 

identify global niche opportunities, particularly 

in the animal sciences, horticulture, marine 

and biomedical industries.”

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas 

Christmas is a great time for passing down recipes that are tried and true becoming 

traditional family favourites. The owner of this recipe says her mum used to make 

the pudding on Christmas Eve and would take the bowl and wooden spoon around 

everyone in the house to stir the mixture and make a wish. 

Make a Wish Christmas Pudding 

You will need: 

• 1 ½ tbsp butter 

• 1 ½ tsp baking soda 

• 1 ½ cups of boiling water 

• 1 ½ cups flour 

• 1 ½ cups mixed fruit or sultanas 

• ¾ cup sugar 

Method: 

1. In a glass or stainless steel bowl, 

melt the butter (over hot water) 

and dissolve the baking soda. 

2. Add the boiling water and 

sugar. 

3. When cool, add flour and 

mixed fruit. 

4. Stir all the ingredients together

Santa’s Brekkie Pancakes 

with fresh berries 

This one is not just for the kids – the sweetness of the bananas makes these 

pancakes scrumptious and a delicious, healthy breakfast hit for everyone! 


• 4-5 bananas (soft enough to mash) 

• 4 eggs 

• ½ cup rice flour 

• 2 tbsp whole linseed 

• ½ tsp salt 

• grated lemon rind 

• juice from 1 lemon 

• splash of vanilla 

• butter to cook the pancakes 

Method: 

1. Peel and mash the bananas in a bowl. 

2. Stir in the eggs, vanilla, linseed, salt 

and lemon ingredients. 

3. Add flour and mix to a smooth batter. 

4. Cook pancakes in frypan on one side 

until they bubble on the surface or hold 

together enough to be flipped over. 

5. If the mixture is thick, flatten the 

pancakes out once they’ve been turned 

over. Each pancake should be around 

1cm thick. 

Kid’s version: 

Decorate each pancake with red berries 

for Santa’s hat, Greek yoghurt or 

whipped cream for Santa’s beard and 

chocolate buttons or grape halves for 

Santa’s eyes. 

Adult’s version: 

Serve with a mix of fresh strawberries, 

blueberries, raspberries, and 

boysenberries. Top off with Greek 

yoghurt.

Each week, board members will 

discuss matters regarding the 

estuary, its rich history and what 

makes it unique. This week Bill 

Simpson writes about carpet 

maker Nimrod Mitchell 

AN EARLY hero of the industry in 

Christchurch was Nimrod Mitchell who 

built a carpet-making factory on a site 

which is now part of Charlesworth Wetland 

Reserve. 

He arrived in Christchurch from the 

United Kingdom in 1879 and in 1884 

opened the Zealandia Carpet Factory. He 

exported to other parts of the colony and 

also to Sydney. 

The Illustrated Guide to Christchurch 

and Neighbourhood of 1885 praised 

Mitchell as “the right man in the right 

place,” and described the opening as 

“a red letter day truly, not only for the 

promoter but also for the whole colony of 

New Zealand.” 

But perhaps the carpet business was not 

so rosy. 

In 1886 Mitchell was charged with 

burning down his own factory to defraud 

his insurers. A witness in the trial, 

George Richardson, said he was offered 

£40 by Mitchell to burn the factory down. 

Richardson suggested kerosene and 

Mitchell had replied “that will do and I 

will give you the key of the factory.” 

However, Richardson later told Mitchell 

he would not set fire to the factory; but 

two weeks later the factory was burnt 

down and Mitchell himself was judged to 

be the culprit. 

That is not the end of the story. In 

August 1887, Sir Julius Vogel, who had 

been Premier of New Zealand and also 

the colonial treasurer, paid tribute to the 

once-destroyed but now rebuilt carpet 

factory. 

Apparently, Zealandia was back in 

business with Mitchell back in control. 

Nothing remains of the factory and the 

site is part of Charlesworth Reserve. 

Volunteers have been working to restore 

the wetland for the past 15 years; if 

you want to help you are elcome to join in 

on Sundays at 3pm at the Charlesworth St 

entrance.

A shorter than most exhibition in order to allow for early pick up for Christmas. 

Contributors are Christchurch women Lorelei Jenner and Jenny Wilson and local 

Jane Downes. Jasmine Keir’s studio is in Keri Keri and Debra Powell is from the 

rural Waikato hamlet of Te Pahu. 

Lorelei Jenner paintings are somewhere between abstract and landscape. The 

images can be both familiar and interpretive, while at the same time mysterious, 

atmospheric and other worldly. 

Debra Powell’s alias in the pottery studio is ‘Little Betty’, her ceramic work has 

strong narrative themes, exploring relationships between people and nature, 

playing with convention and infusing the result with a gentle humour. 

Oxidised copper artist Jasmine Keir endeavours to create and understand the 

pure alchemy of the colours achievable using a vast variety of natural ingredients 

to react and colour her copper panels. 

Jenny Wilson has recreated a series of white porcelain moths these light 

mysterious creatures are pinned in reference to museum specimens; others rest 

on circles – an ancient Chinese symbol of the cycles of life, and of the cosmos. 

Jane Downes’ delicate themes are fabricated in steel. “A joyful look at the 

symbiotic relationship between bees and flowers and an observation of nature’s 

sacred geometry and spontaneity.”

Community fair with charitable twist 

A COMMUNITY fair with a 

charitable twist is set to give 

residents the chance to give back 

this weekend. 

Windsorcare is hosting a 

fair extravaganza at its Shirley 

premises on Saturday, at 1pm, 

with funds raised going toward’s 

the charitable trust’s activities. 

General manager Dr Warren 

Smith said the money raised will 

help pay for outings for their 

residents who are not able to 

afford it. 

“The money raised will go 

towards activities and outings for 

our residents,” Dr Smith said. 

“Every month the men get 

to go on an outing and the 

women like to do something 

different, the men love to go 

to a workingmen’s club for 

lunch and a pint, the ladies also 

love lunching but probably to 

somewhere like Orana Park or 

lovely gardens.” 

Social connectedness is vital to 

residents well-being and mental 

health and is something Windsorcare 

is very focused on, he said.
