Big win for
Medbury
School crew
TALENTED YOUNG musicians
took to the stage last week in the
10th annual Rockquest Bandquest
competition.
Nearly 200 bands from schools
across New Zealand battled it out
at the competition for intermediate
and primary students.
Among the 44 Canterbury bands
competing was a group from
Haeata Community Campus.
Said judge Dayna Sanerivi:
“There was heaps of talent in
Christchurch, and all three nights
was a great vibe. I can’t wait to
see what music they make in the
future. I was really impressed.”
Results from schools in the
Western News area include:
•First: Winning $400 credit with
The Rockshop for their school –
The Creyke Rd Crew, Medbury
School.
•Second: Winning $200 credit
with The Rockshop for their school
– Wicked, Cobham Intermediate.l
•Best original song: Winning
$100 cash for their school – What
About Love? by Wicked, Cobham
Intermediate.
•Best vocalist: Savanna from
Anonymous Rock, Templeton
Primary School.
•’Killer’ guitarist award:
Mason from Wicked, Cobham
Intermediate.
Rotary recognises community heroes

adviser Lisa Gregory with her
Vocational Excellence Award.
LISA Gregory’s dedication
to ensuring her community
stays connected has been
recognised.
For more than 25 years, the
Rotary Club of Bishopdale-
Burnside has been awarding
people who go above and
beyond for their community
at its annual Community
Service Awards.
The awards celebrate the
achievements of businesses
and individuals in the city’s
northwest.
They were held at the
Elms Hotel on November
16. The accolades handed
out included a Vocational
Excellence Award and a
Small Business Award.
Gregory, who is a city
council community
recreation adviser, was
recognised for her dedication
to the Bishopdale community
with the Vocational
Excellence Award.
It is presented to a person
who has contributed
significantly over a period of
time to a specific vocation to
a high standard of excellence.
Based at the Fendalton
Service Centre, one of
Gregory’s responsibilities
for the past five years has
been to organise the now
established annual Celebrate
Bishopdale event, which last
year attracted more than
2000 visitors.
Organising the event
is a “huge undertaking”,
which Gregory handled in
a professional and efficient
manner, contributing hugely
to its ongoing success.
The Small Business Award
recognises a business that
has set a high standard of
performance, service quality
and customer satisfaction.
This year the recipient
was Burgess Automotive
– a family-owned business
which has been operating in
the north-west for more than
40 years.
Owners Wayne and Janet
Burgess started their first
automotive business in North
Rd in 1977 before moving
to their present location in
Sturrocks Rd 20 years ago.
They have now been joined
at the business by their son
Jeremy.
From humble beginnings,
they have grown the business
and now have a seven
staff, as well as premises
and equipment which are
the envy of some larger
automotive companies in
Christchurch.
They understand that the
north west is constantly
expanding to keep up to date
with the changing needs.
