NEW SOMERSET RESIDENTS
TO GET PROPERTY
INFORMATION FASTER
Somerset Regional Council will amend its
property search process to alert prospective
buyers earlier about possible problems, well
before settlement.
Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the change
was about protecting prospective buyers.
“We are receiving large numbers of property
search requests from solicitors including
apparent sight-unseen sales,” Cr Lehmann
said.
“We need to make sure that we don’t just let
the buyers’ solicitors know about any known
issues with properties but also let the buyers
themselves know.
“With city people interested in moving to
our great rural area, we have an obligation
to make sure the buyers understand road
access, flooding, building, pest plant and
other issues with the properties to avoid
potential problems later.”
Council has changed its policy to enable new
buyers to get this information as quickly as
possible.
SOMERSET FINDS $7,000
SAVINGS
Somerset Regional Council has changed its
risk management policy involving flood boat
insurance coverage.
Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the change
was another cost saving measure.
“We are looking for practical savings and
this latest change follows other moves to
save insurance premiums, electricity and
telecommunications costs, government
levies and other costs without impacting on
service levels,” Cr Lehmann said.
COUNCIL POSTPONES FREE
TREE DAY EVENTS
A popular annual free tree day program,
delivered by Somerset Regional Council, has
been postponed in 2020 due to COVID.
Council traditionally holds three free tree
day events in September/October each year
where residents receive between two and 20
free trees.
Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said
council was investigating other models of
free tree delivery for early next year
“We know our residents are appreciative of
the free tree day program and we would like
to continue to provide this great program that
benefits our residents and our environment,”
Cr Lehmann said.
“Due to its popularity and social distancing
requirements, Council is unable to run the
event in the traditional way.
“We are however looking at alternative ways
to deliver this program for this financial year.
“We also need to investigate availability of
trees at our local nurseries in the quantities
we need to meet demand and also suitability
of planting trees in the summer or autumn
seasons.”
COUNCIL EXPRESSES
GRATITUDE FOR BEING
PART OF WORKS FOR
QUEENSLAND PROGRAM
Somerset Regional Council has
expressed its gratitude to the State
Government for including it as part of
the Works for Queensland program.
Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said
the program was invaluable for the
region.
“Works for Queensland is an effective jobs
and economic growth initiative from the
government, which sees millions poured into
regional councils,” Cr Lehmann said.
Council will write to the Queensland
State Premier and the Minister for State
Development, Infrastructure, Local
Government and Planning thanking them
for including Somerset in the funding and
further, requesting that the funding (or
equivalent) be extended.
While getting active at the beach,
rainforest or in the bush are great
ways to enjoy the great outdoors
this summer, Queenslanders must
remember the importance of
proper hydration and sun safety
as hot weather hits.
Queensland Health spokesperson Bronwyn
Nardi said under the hot Queensland sun, it’s
very easy to become dehydrated, especially
when physically active, and it’s important to
be prepared and always bring water.
“Dehydration is the result of your body losing
too much water and not being replaced
quickly enough. Your body can lose water
very quickly in hot weather by sweating, and
you also lose water simply by exhaling,” Ms
Nardi said.
“Remember it’s not just the elderly or children
that can be affected by dehydration, it can
affect any Queenslander, even if you’re fit and
healthy.
“Dehydration can have serious consequences
such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, and
you can suffer serious illness.
“Even if you’re heading out on a short
bushwalk, run, cycle or paddle, you should
always be carrying water during the warmer
months - at least 1-2 litres per person.
“If you’re heading out for a half or full day on
the water or in the bush, it’s recommended to
carry at least 3-4 litres of water.
“You should be drinking water regularly
throughout the day – don’t wait until you’re
thirsty.
“It’s also a good idea to head out early to
avoid the warmest parts of the day and even
think about choosing locations offering some
shade as much as possible,” Ms Nardi said.
Symptoms of dehydration include thirstiness,
a dry mouth, headache or light headedness or
dizziness.
The best thing to do to avoid and treat
dehydration is to drink water, and you can
also use oral rehydration solutions to replace
electrolytes. Avoid alcoholic, caffeinated or
sugary drinks.
Ms Nardi also encouraged people to protect
themselves from harmful UV rays in multiple
ways every time they are outdoors as the
weather heats up.
“A hat, sunscreen and sunglasses are a good
idea, and where possible, a long-sleeved shirt
and pants is also smart. This not only helps to
protect you against the sun, but also insects
such as ticks and mosquitoes,” she said.
This year through to the end of October,
there have been 635 emergency department
presentations for heat related illness, with
the most presentations in the Cairns and
Hinterland, Central Queensland and Metro
North Hospital and Health Service regions.
In October 2020, there were 77 heat related
emergency department presentations to
Queensland hospitals – a 37% increase from
the previous month.
In 2019, there were 1,161 emergency
department presentations across the state
for heat related illness such as heatstroke or
sunstroke.
Emergency department presentations for
heat related illness start to increase during the
spring months and typically continue to rise
throughout summer.
In September 2019, there were 40 heat
related emergency department presentations
to Queensland hospitals. This rose to 84
presentations in October 2019 and spiked to
157 presentations in November 2019 and 220
presentations in December 2019.
In January 2020, presentations remained high
with 194 presentations, decreasing to 163 in
February 2020 and 64 in March 2020.
Somerset Regional Council has
released data showing traffic
volumes on the recently upgraded
Gregors Creek Road are up by
114%.
Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the
project involved making the road a suitable
inter-highway connector.
“This project is already paying off with
increased usage and we couldn’t be happier,”
Cr Lehmann said.
“We look forward to welcoming Senator
The Aussie Backyard Bird Count
has celebrated its biggest year
ever, despite – and perhaps even
because of – the many difficulties
2020 has brought with it.
Now in its seventh consecutive year, the
count was held from 19 to 25 October, and
saw record-breaking success, with 4.6 million
birds counted across the nation, soaring past
the 3.4 million counted in 2019.
The number of young people involved raised
dramatically, with numbers of participating
schools rising to more than 1,500.
In Queensland, the Rainbow Lorikeet, Noisy
Miner, and Torresian Crow were the mostcounted
birds, which came as little surprise to
Somerset Regional Council
has, with the assistance of local
contractors, cleared more than
350 hectares of the invasive pest
plant species, lantana, in just four
months.
In the same period, council has chemically
treated more than 75 hectares of lantana.
The proactive and aggressive approach to the
removal of lantana in the region is ongoing
but stems from over $900,000 in Australian
Government funding awarded to council to
help farmers reduce the impacts of pests and
weeds following drought and bushfires.
Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said
significant inroads had been made in the
battle against lantana in the region.
“Council is also providing landowners in
Somerset with a 100% chemical subsidy
Paul Scarr and other Australian Government
representatives to the region on Thursday, 26
November and reporting back how successful
this project has been.
“We are grateful to the Australian Government
for jointly funding this $3.3M project.
“In addition to Gregors Creek Road being
6.5 kilometres shorter than the highway
route, it provides an important alternative
for motorists when the D’Aguilar Highway or
Brisbane Valley Highway are closed because
of a crash.
“Even before the new bridge and upgraded
road is officially opened we’re seeing a 114%
increase in traffic. That’s fantastic.
organisers.
“Overall, Rainbow Lorikeets finished on top
of the list throughout Australia, with more
than half a million counted this year,” BirdLife
Australia’s chief ‘bird nerd’, Sean Dooley said.
“These colourful birds have finished on top
every year since the Aussie Bird Count began
in 2014.”
Mr Dooley said he believed the lockdowns
and restrictions associated with the COVID-19
pandemic had influenced the number of
people taking part.
“With so many of us forced to slow down
during the COVID lockdown, we suddenly
became aware that birds are all around us, no
matter where they are,” he said.
“It really shows the importance that birds came
to have in our lives this year. As our personal
worlds became more restricted and quieter,
birds offered a much-needed connection with
the outside world and brought us a sense of
program for lantana which has had a huge
take up,” Cr Lehmann said.
“Just for the Lantana Chemical Subsidy
Program we have received 46 expressions of
interest and 26 property pest management
plans approved.”
“Managing pests
and weeds is a
significant cost at
the best of times
for farmers and
even more so at
a time when they
are doing it tough
due to drought so
we’re doing what
we can to support
them carry out
these important
activities,” he said.
“If the increased usage continues, which we
expect it will, new commuters will save 1
million kms in total over one year by using
Gregors Creek Road.”
Cr Lehmann said the road is providing a
massive economic boost for Somerset at a
time when it is needed most.
“The Australian Government has also agreed
to help Somerset Regional Council fund a
further $12 million in vital works under the
Bridges Renewal Program and Heavy Vehicle
Safety and Productivity Program over the next
two years including Lowood Minden Road
and Esk-Crows Nest Road - far more than any
neighbouring council area,” he said.
solace and delight,” he said.
Many of the birds in the national top ten
are familiar faces to all Australians, with the
Rainbow Lorikeet, Noisy Miner, Australian
Magpie, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo and Galah
rounded out the top five.
These were followed by the House Sparrow,
Welcome Swallow, Silver Gull, Common Myna,
with the Australian White Ibis rounding out
the top ten.
The wealth of data gathered through the
nation-wide citizen science project will
go towards helping animal researchers
throughout Australia.
“The information gathered during the Aussie
Backyard Bird Count will feed back into
BirdLife Australia’s databases and will provide
a much clearer picture of what’s happening
with local bird populations across the country,”
Mr Dooley said.
LETTERS, COMMENT & ANNOUNCEMENTS
TOOGOOLAWAH PICTURES
“The Toogoolawah PICTURES will recommence
screening this weekend in
response to the latest relaxation of the
COVID-19 restrictions.
Up until now the Pictures have not been able
to open due to restriction of numbers making
operation unviable and due to changes in the
way we will have to operate the evening, the
Progress Association has decided to trial a few
nights to gauge community reaction before
proceeding into a full program.
The Progress members have assessed the way
nightly programs operate in conjunction with
the layout of the Alexandra Hall.
The biggest hurdle for the Pictures is
It was another big week at the
History Museum in Toogoolawah.
Two delightful visitors, Anne and Brian Nathan,
came to donate some quite old school photos
of Esk State School students - “school photos”
to the museum. The photographs will be
safely stored in an archive box titled “Chaille.”
So, if you are interested, come to the History
Museum, and check them out.
On Friday, seven rather chipper cyclists were
observed photographing one of the murals
on the wall of the Museum Storage Shed and
were keen to be photographed in front of
it. They were also happy to chat about their
morning on the BVRT. A group of friends rather
than an official club, they had left Linville early
that morning arriving in Toogoolawah about
8 am. They inspected the Museum when it
opened and were delighted to see the famous
Les Cecil bicycle and to read about his many
distancing when lining up and moving
around the hall and the members have made
the hard decision of not having an interval for
the time being. The Kitchen service will also
be temporarily closed. This means patrons
will miss out on their favourite Saturday night
Hot Dog and fresh Popcorn fix until we find a
solution. The Snack Bar will operate as normal.
Patrons will need to book their tickets
in advance for the pictures, for seating
to be allocated according to distancing
requirement. We apologise in advance, if
we do not have spare seats on the night.
Bookings can be made by texting the number
A request from community groups
for the Somerset Regional Council
to reverse a previous decision has
been denied at last week’s council
meeting.
The request related to traffic cones, small
orange bollards, and orange barrier mesh,
which the Council’s Operational Department
used to provide to non-profit community
events free of charge.
The items weren’t stored for the sole use
for community events, and were stored in
Council’s stores for use by Council’s Works
Branch for its own roadworks, projects and
hazard marking activities.
Due to the limited availability of these items,
their susceptibility to damage and loss, and
the increased workload for council officers
in organising the allocation of these items
to community events (often several hours),
council resolved in 2019 to stop providing
these items.
Recently, the council recently received
correspondence from the Valley of the
Lakes Garden Club Inc asking the council to
reconsider the decision on not supplying
traffic cones and bollards to non-profit groups
when holding events.
They argued that it was unfair that volunteer
community clubs with limited fund should
have to either purchase traffic cones and
bollards, and then find somewhere to store
them when not in use.
Councillor Cheryl Gaedtke expressed her
support for this point of view.
“I see this as another barrier to our community
groups,” she said.
“Our groups need this access, there has to be
another option instead of just cancelling this
service.”
However, fellow councillors were in
agreement with the council’s original decision
to stop supplying their items, with Cr. Robert
Whalley arguing the situation presented an
opportunity for the different groups in the
community to collaborate, which is something
the council has been trying to encourage for
several years.
“As with everything in life, where there’s
a problem, there’s an opportunity for
improvement,” he said.
“There’s opportunity here for these groups to
work together and share these items.”
He emphasised the importance of
communication between community groups,
noting that while some lacked the finances
and storage space to keep cones and bollards,
others had ample spare space in their facilities.
Following further discussion, councillors
voted that a report be brought back to
Council identifying which community groups
had previously made use of the traffic cones,
bollards and orange barrier mesh, and which
groups have access to potential storage
solutions.
People will be able to travel freely
to Queensland without a border
declaration pass from December
1 unless they have been in a
COVID-19 hotspot.
With Queensland reopening its borders to all
of New South Wales and Victoria on Tuesday,
only travellers who have been in a hotspot
or overseas within 14 days will be required to
complete a border declaration pass.
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) will
also remove its road border checkpoints so
motorists can travel freely across state borders.
Anyone who has been in a declared COVID
hotspot or overseas will need to complete
a border declaration pass online before
travelling to Queensland.
They will be required to stay in hotel quarantine
for 14 days and must enter Queensland by air,
unless they have an exemption. They will not
be permitted to travel to Queensland by road.
Police officers will conduct random
interceptions along the Queensland state
road border to ensure they have not travelled
from a hotspot.
A police presence will remain at airports with
compliance checks carried out on all flights
from COVID-19 hotspots and random checks
on passengers disembarking from other
interstate flights.
State Disaster Coordinator Deputy
Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said
the border control announcement was an
important milestone in the road to recovery
from COVID-19.
“Introducing border controls in Queensland
has not been done for more than 100 years
and it has been a mammoth operation,”
Deputy Commissioner Gollschewski said.
“We know it has been difficult for many people,
particularly those in border communities and
I would like to thank those residents for their
patience and cooperation.
He said more than one million vehicles had
been intercepted at road borders since March
27.
“I would like to acknowledge the effort of all
police officers, members of the Australian
Defence Force, SES, Department of Transport
and Main Roads and all others who have
assisted in the operation.
“Persevering through freezing cold nights and
very hot days, they have been at the frontline
of our COVID-19 response and have done an
outstanding job of protecting Queensland.”
NATHAN GREAVES
Among the many events and
initiatives postponed due to
COVID-19 this year, the Somerset
Regional Council’s free tree day –
usually held in October – was one
of the casualties.
Though the future of restrictions in the region
remains unpredictable, the council began
discussions of other options for the future of
the free tree program at their meeting last
week.
Several possibilities were considered,
including a normal tree event in April, a clickand-collect
service, provision of tree packs or
seed sticks, offering vouchers to be honoured
at local nurseries, or simply postponing the
program entirely until October 2021.
The latter option was the course recommended
to councillors by Director of Operations Craig
Young.
“We feel the level of success in the program
comes from the engagement with council
officers, being able to get advice and discuss
ideas,” he said.
“There’s a lot of uncertainty, with so much
interest and enthusiasm, so we recommend
deferring.”
The program has certainly proven its
popularity, with more than 5500 trees
distributed during 2019.
However, Councillor Robert Whalley opposed
the recommendation, and suggested that
council pursue collaborations with local
nurseries.
“I respectfully disagree. I strongly believe we’re
in a period where people want to improve
their gardens. It’s the perfect opportunity to
get the free trees out there,” he said.
“People will come in for a free tree, then they’ll
see a houseplant, see a garden statue, and so
on. It will help those businesses, and economic
recovery in the region.”
Cr. Sean Choat supported Cr. Whalley’s
suggestion, but acknowledged there were
difficulties involved with planning and
executing such a plan.
“To be fair, we’d need to plan it very well,” he
said.
“We’re putting commercial businesses up
there, and we wouldn’t want them having a
bad experience on it.”
Both Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke and CEO
Andrew Johnson noted there were other
difficulties and limitations involved, especially
relating to getting enough seedlings for
the program – as these are usually sourced
from outside the region – and the timing for
growing and planting – if the program were to
be held at a different time of the year rather
than in October.
The council voted for a report to be compiled
and presented at a future meeting regarding
whether it would be viable to host a free tree
program with local nurseries in early 2021.
NATHAN GREAVES
Following untold months of
planning, construction, and
installation, a replica of the
Coronation Hall at Somerset Dam
was unveiled last week.
On the morning of Tuesday, November 24,
representatives from the local community,
the Somerset Dam and Districts Progress
Assocation, Toogoolawah Men’s Shed, and
Somerset Regional Council came out to the
hall for the official presentation.
The replica is intended to serve as a
community book box, with community
members welcome to take what they like and
leave books of their own if they wish.
The scale version of the hall was painstakingly
created by the team from the Toogoolawah
Men’s Shed, who used reference photos to
match the dimensions and colour of the
original building, while taking every effort to
make the box as sturdy as possible to survive
weather and vandals.
Councillor Sean Choat, whose suggestions
inspired the design of the box, presided over
the opening.
“Isn’t this brilliant? Our Mayor always says we
can’t do things in Somerset without members
of our community, and in particular
the community groups,” he said.
“This is a community asset. I don’t
think we’ve had anything created
in our community for a very long
time as special as this. I know this
is going to grow and become
something that everyone comes
to respect and love, and wouldn’t it
be great if we saw them propagate
around the region?”
Passers-by in the area can make
use of the book box at any time,
and unlike some similar initiatives, there is no
obligation for those who take something from
the box to leave another book in return.
The project was funded through a cash for
cans initiative carried out at the nearby park
in the Somerset Dam Village, one of many
projects the Progress Association has been
involved with in recent times, with others
included the establishment of new walking
trails, and collaboration with Seqwater
towards the dam upgrade legacy projects.
Association President Noelene Hunter took
the opportunity to bring the visitors into the
hall for morning tea, and to discuss some of
the other plans the group had to celebrate the
region’s history.
These include new historical signs to be placed
at surviving period buildings in the area, and
new high-quality frames to be placed in the
hall, containing historical photos.
“The photos will be professionally printed
from original scanned versions,” she said.
“Photo selection is underway, and appropriate
wording will be added to individual photos.”
The frames will be protected by Perspex rather
than glass, with hidden locking mechanisms
to keep them anchored to the wall and
discourage tampering.
“There’s single frames, double-panel frames,
and triple-panel frames,” Noelene said.
“Some special frames will also be designed for
a town map, and a collage.”
Having a disability needn’t stop
you showcasing your abilities and
achieving your goals.
International Day of People with Disability
on December 3 is a global celebration of the
achievements and contributions of people
living with disability.
Supporting people with disability and
ensuring they feel connected and included
in their local community is what Carinity Our
House in Toogoolawah is all about.
Speaking in the lead up to International Day
of People with Disability, Carinity Our House
Client Services Coordinator Maggie Poole
says social inclusion is paramount to making
people feel a part of the community they live
in.
“Carinity Our House gives our people their
own life outside of home and family. This
gives them a sense of individuality, purpose
and pleasure while making new friends and
creating new opportunities,” Maggie says.
Carinity Our House provides social activities,
short-term on-site accommodation, in-home
support and personal care, and assisting with
volunteering and teaching life skills.
Shane Smith of Toogoolawah has been a
Carinity Our House client for almost a decade.
While Covid19, Coronavirus and
contact tracing are some of the
‘C’ words which have become
common in lexicon lingo of late,
countdown, Christmas concert
and choral singing by the choir
will hopefully become the new ‘C’
words of choice.
The confidence and skills Shane has
developed has helped to create opportunities
such as a volunteering role at the Gatton
Transport Museum and obtaining his learner’s
license to drive trucks.
Completing life-skills courses also empowered
Shane to form a catering group, dubbed the
Lunch ‘n’ Kings, which published their own
cookbook.
“Our House has supported me to learn
everyday life skills which has assisted me
with my
independence.
I have also
learned social
skills. I’ve come
along way with
my confidence
over the years,”
Shane says.
“The bridge is named after Bertram Shallcross,”
“It was an honour to watch Mrs Shallcross cut
The project was jointly funded, with the the ribbon.”
The new Shallcross Bridge has
opened, providing an economic
boost to the Somerset region and
surrounding areas.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for
Infrastructure, Transport and Regional
Development Michael McCormack said the
project was funded under Round 3 of the
Bridges Renewal Program (BRP).
“This program funds the upgrade and
replacement of bridges to enhance access
for local communities and facilitate higherproductivity
vehicle access,” the Deputy Prime
Minister said.
“This project will reduce trips by 6.5 kilometres
relative to the State Highway, improving
safety and increasing flood immunity – that’s
a huge benefit delivered.”
Senator for Queensland Paul Scarr said the
project included demolition of the existing
bridge, construction of a new two-lane bridge
and minor changes to road alignment.
“Sixty-five jobs were supported over the life of
the project,” Senator Scarr said.
“The new bridge will allow two-way traffic
for the first time, increasing both safety and
the freight productivity of this route. With
Somerset Regional Council, we know any
project will be well planned, well costed and
NATHAN GREAVES
For many years, customers of
the Coominya Post Office have
complained of limited parking
and obstruction by other vehicles,
and at last change is on its way.
The post office in Coominya has a limited
number of spaces available directly in front
of it, forcing elderly and disabled customers
to park further away or cross the road when
these parking spaces are used by vehicles that
aren’t visiting the post office.
Officers from the Somerset Regional Council
recently investigated the area, noting that
visitors to the nearby café, and even delivery
trucks servicing the café, would sometimes
park directly in front of the post office despite
ample parking space elsewhere on the street,
obstructing these parking spaces and at times
partially blocking the post office driveway for
anywhere between fifteen and forty minutes.
At their meeting last week, the SRC voted
to enact new changes to the parking spaces
nearby, repainting lines and placing signage
that would turn the area in front of the post
office into a loading zone with a fifteenminute
maximum parking time during
business hours.
Cr. Sean Choat praised the decision, noting
that similar measures had proven successful
elsewhere in the region in the past.
“This has been a really great move,” he said.
“It worked very well in Lowood, for businesses
and residents, and I think it will do the same
here.”
• Esk Police have released CCTV images as part
of an appeal to the public as investigations
continue into the theft of a motorcycle from
an Esk business on November 15.
Shortly after midnight, a dark coloured
station wagon possibly Commodore VZ with
panel damage to the drivers passenger door
pulls up to the rear of the property in Peters
Street with one of the occupant’s seen to
climb a fence before forcing open the front
gate and removing the YCF STARTS NGK 110
motorcycle.
The bike is then put in the vehicle at the side
of the business near the intersection with
A LAWYER AND A DOCTOR
A lawyer was cross-examining the
doctor about whether or not he had
checked the pulse of the deceased
before he signed the death certificate.
“No,” the doctor said. “I did not check
his pulse.” “And did you listen for a
heartbeat?” asked the lawyer. “No I
did not,” the doctor said. “So,” said the
lawyer, “when you signed the death
certificate, you had not taken steps to
make sure he was dead.” The doctor
said, “Well, let me put it this way. The
man’s brain was in a jar on my desk
but, for all I know, he could be out
practicing law somewhere.”
THE SUPERBOWL TICKET
asks the man next to him if anyone is
was empty. John is very excited to have
a seat like this at a Super Bowl and asks
why in the world no one is using it?
The man replied that it was his wife’s
away. He said this
was the first Super
it was really sad and
“No” replied the
man, “They’re at her
The Tigers were on the road on Saturday playing against Helidon.
The Tigers won the toss and Brodie who was Captain chose to bat first.
Jai and Nate opened the batting for the team and scored 9 and 6 respectively.
Billy was in next and had a very good innings top scoring with a well-played 41 which included
a few six's and fours , Isaac joined him and added 20 runs to form a good partnership between
the two batsmen.
Joe had another good innings with the bat scoring a well-earned 31.
Brodie added 15 to the tally with some very good shot selections , Dean backed that up with
6 and Griffin closed out the innings with 9.
A good innings by the Tigers for the loss of only four wickets.
A short drinks break and the Tigers took to the field as the morning started to warm up.
The Helidon batsmen got off to a good start but as the innings progressed the Tigers bowlers
managed to reduce the run rate.
Nate , Isaak , Brodie and Griffin each took one wicket , included in that were some very good
run outs.
It was a very evenly matched game on a very hot day and a big effort by the players , however
in the end Helidon got the win by just three runs.
Esk and District Tigers 4 - 140 Helidon 4 - 143.
Player of the match was Billy top scoring with 41 and some economical bowling figures of
0-16.
One more game next week before the school holidays break and a well earned rest for the
kids.
The Tigers will be at home in Toogoolawah.
Great effort by the kids and thanks to all the parents that helped on the day.
Esk1 had yet another home game this week against Gatton Fordsdale.
Sam was captain for the day and after attending the toss we were sent into bat.
A changeup in the batting order saw Carter and Paul open the batting.
Carter thrived scoring a rapid fire 20 runs. Paul (4) was a brick wall in defence as usual keeping
the Gatton bowlers at bay. Pip was next to the crease and she meant business, hitting her first
three deliveries for four to finish up with 23 runs. Next up was Maddie who was on debut.
Maddie was like a rabbit between the wickets running 11 singles.
The ever reliable Grace (12), Sam (6) an Holly (12)followed. Poppy also on debut wasn’t going
to outdone by her sister. Poppy hit three fours off the cone to reach a great score of 17. Louis
hit two sixes on his way to 27 and Ben (24) gave us the big finish we needed to end up with
5/156.
Captain of the day Sam opened the bowling and kept things tight. Our fielding was on fire
with Carter, Ben and Louis all claiming run outs.
The game was in the balance with a few overs to go until Grace answered the call with two
wickets in her last over. Louis followed this up with another two wickets in hisn last over
including taking middle stump out of the ground with the last delivery of the match.
We had got home by restricting Gatton to 8/120. Pip was named player of the match for her
great batting and fielding.
A big thankyou to all the parents for helping throughout the morning.
This week is our last game before we break for Summer holidays. We take on Forest Hill at their
home ground. Lets hope it’s not too hot!
TOOGOOLAWAH STORE CATTLE SALE
Friday December 4 th 2020
Commencing 10am
Hi there Somerset,
I drove to Caboolture once last week and
to Toogoolawah twice and both times I
nearly got wiped out by people speeding or
overtaking dangerously.
During the 12 years I worked for Government
traveling to Caboolture I could always see a
trend in people’s behavior and especially
their driving during the month prior to
Christmas.
Its almost like everybody is on superfast
mode but you know, it doesn’t have to be
like that.
Christmas and New Year consist of 5 days –
Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day,
New Years Eve and New Years Day. So why
do we all shop for 5 weeks and 50 extra
people and sanitise the whole house.
So I am asking you Somerset TO SLOW
DOWN! Me included.
We all love seeing our family at Christmas
but this is also what brings out a lot of stress
in people – the preparation. Extra cleaning,
extra shopping, extra chores, extra cooking,
extra people in our space. Did you know
its OK to spend Christmas with JUST your
immediate family (or even no family and
just friends) You can do the family gathering
earlier in December. Did you know it’s OK
to ask others to contribute to the food
(making it or financial) and the BIG ONE –
did you know you can put a time limit on the
visits? That’s why people have Happy Hour
– people can remain happy for one hour of
company!!!!
So my tips to surviving the holidays
• Go for a walk if it all becomes too much -
ALONE
• Find a quite space to relax and let people
know you need an hour OUT
• Ring a positive friend for a chat but also
limit that time
• Ask yourself ‘Am I repeating what I do every
year and every year I am not happy doing it’
and then make an effort to change it.
• Slow down – you are on a break also so
your steps don’t have to be the usual 10,000
per day.
• Hydrate your body especially if you are
drinking alcohol. Dehydration causes
irritability.
And Somerset remember:
If you’re finding it hard to cope, you might
like to talk to someone who’s not so close to
the situation. Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800 or
Lifeline 13 11 14 both have counsellors who
are available 24 hours a day, so feel free to
call them if you feel overwhelmed.
