Highways England tomake motoring easier fordisabled driversHighways England plans tomake it easier for disabledmotorists to use UKmotorways and A-roads.More than 100 serviceareas will be assessed on theaccessibility of parking, toilets,petrol stations, shops andrestaurants.Watford Gap motorwayservice area has alreadybeen assessed and theplan is to launch 113 VirtualAccess Guides on England’smotorway service areas inearly 2021.The guides will include360-degree imagery sodisabled motorists can see inadvance the route to facilitiessuch as accessible toilets.The initiative is part ofa collaboration betweenHighways England and theAccessAble app, which givesdisabled motorists informationon thousands of venuesacross the UK and Ireland.AccessAble directorDavid Livermore called it a“groundbreaking initiative”. Heexplained: “This project willnot only give people all theinformation they need to plan atrip but also support HighwaysEngland and MotorwayService Operations to see howfacilities could be improved inthe future.”Highways England is alsoupdating its costumer contactcentre to allow anyone who isa British Sign Language user touse SignLive to communicatewith the organisation.The free service connectsdeaf users with a professionalBSL interpreter; they willcontact Highways Englandon their behalf and thentranslate the conversion.Around 150,000 peoplein the UK use British SignLanguage as their main meansof communication.Both initiatives have comefrom Highways England’sRoads for All Forum, whichwas established in 2018.This brings togetherpeople from a wide rangeof organisations that helprepresent disabled motorists,including Motability, DisabilityRights UK, RAC, DisabledMotoring UK and DrivingMobility.Nearly one in four peoplehas a disability and disabledmotorists represent fivepercent of the drivingpopulation.mobilitynews40
