Enjoy the spirit of
Christmas on a budget
Christmas does not have to
be an expensive time of year,
for those whose budgets are
tight this year.
Creating your own wrapping paper and
decorations not only adds an individual
look for the festive season but can also be
a great way to spend family time – and
save money.
Old Christmas cards can be
transformed into great decorations. The
more vintage the better: simply cut out
Christmassy shapes like trees and stars
from the covers, put a hole in the top
and string them up around the house.
If you have any cards left over create
personalised gift tags with a difference.
Pine cones can be placed in a vase
on the table or in your wood burner
or strung up as festive bunting. They
look great when spray-painted gold or
silver and placed randomly around the
house.
Christmas decorations can also be
made using a dough consisting of flour,
salt, and water moulded into any shape
you want such as stars, Christmas trees
or Santas. Bake until hard and decorate
with glitter and paint.
Adorn areas like mantelpieces
and bannisters with real leaves, pine
cones, knitted or crochet garlands,
paper chains, fabric bunting or edible
treats.
Instead of buying a live Christmas
tree each year, think about having a
living potted Christmas tree that you
can plant outside once the festive
season ends. Or make your own
Christmas tree using driftwood.
Wrapping paper can be
personalised by buying simple brown
paper or sacking and adding stamps
using potatoes and some paint. Children
can create their own artwork with felt
pens and stickers or how about using
their artwork from kindergarten or
school? Christmas-themed stamps can be
another option with red and green ink.
Making Christmas gifts is another
great option not only to save money but
add your own personal touches to
your present. There are hundreds of
inspiring recipes for festive cookies,
ginger bread, cakes and fudge or how
about filling a special mug with coffee
sachets and a chocolate spoon?
Finally purchasing presents for the
entire extended family can cost a lot.
Think about having a secret Santa
where everyone buys one gift for a
set amount of money and then have
a lucky dip – always plenty of fun
without emptying the wallet.
Create your dream
pool
Make a splash with a new pool,
courtesy of local company Lagoon
Pools. The company installs pools
in sizes to suit both small and large
sections, ranging from five metres to
12 metres in length with a variety of
widths, colours and shapes. A unique
fully automatic slat cover system is
a popular option as well as other
cover systems including the safety
cover. Lagoon Pools are the dealer for
Leisure Pools and every swimming
pool has a lifetime structural and
osmosis warranty. Contact Lagoon
