Response times will be much faster
THE DISTRICT has fared
better than the rest of the
country from the impacts of
Covid-19.
The district saw a smaller
impact on its economy than
the rest of New Zealand,
with its economy already
returning to growth and adding
more than 600 jobs since
lockdown.
This is according to the latest
report on the impacts of the
pandemic by analytics company
Infometrics.
The report shows Selwyn’s
economy decreased by 10.4
per cent over the April-June
quarter this year, compared
with a 12.4 per cent decline
nationally.
The district’s economy grew
over the three months to
September, ending 2.6 per cent
higher than the same time last
year.
Nationally over the same
period the economy decreased
by 3.2 per cent.
By the end of September the
district had also added 640
jobs, with healthcare and
social assistance and manufacturing
the industries leading
the way.
However, the report warns
that the biggest impacts of
Covid-19 are still to come and
the international recession will
slow New Zealand’s economy
as the district’s construction
boom eases.
The forecast is for Selwyn’s
economy to slow down less
than the rest of the country.
This second report on the
expected impacts of Covid
for the district forecasts it will
do significantly better than
initially thought, thanks to a
stronger than expected residential
market and construction
growth.
The report warns that
the impacts on tourism
and other international
demands are expected to lead
to an economic downturn
nationwide over the next year,
before the economy begins to
grow again in 2022.
It forecasts Selwyn will see a
smaller economic slowdown,
led by a predicted easing in
the district’s construction
boom. It also forecasts that this

As well as Lincoln, the
ambulance will be available
to attend emergencies in
areas including Rolleston
and Tai Tapu.
Last year the Lincoln
Volunteer Fire Brigade responded
to 54 motor vehicle
crashes and 17 medical calls.
There are also St John ambulances
based at Rolleston
and Darfield.
Last year, Rolleston Fire
Station became staffed
24/7 meaning it has one
ambulance operating 24
hours a day, seven days
a week and a second
ambulance on a 12-hour day
shift from mid-morning to
mid-evening.
Covid-19 economic hit less for Selwyn

come later than the rest of New
Zealand.
The district’s economy is
forecast to decrease by about
0.9 per cent by March next
year compared to 4.1 per cent
nationally and by 0.7 per cent
the following year.
The economy nationally is
predicted to grow by 1 per
cent.
The report is based on
national and international
conditions at the time of
writing, and notes that
forecasts could change
depending on global factors
such as the rollout of vaccines
in 2021 and travel restrictions
which it forecasts to last into
2022.
