Carrie Sieh and her humble yet magnificent creations connect
us to the land, again and again. Environmental concerns,
coupled with the artist’s passion for local medicinal plants,
provide the ingredients in a recipe for society’s survival. Sieh is
the artist-as-healer, reminding viewers that we must clean up
our act in order to embrace and rise above our humanity.
Sieh repurposes used materials to create beautiful installations
and drawings. The artist intensively researches everything
she incorporates into her work (i.e., fabrics, pigments, etc.) to
ensure none were produced with any major ecological impact.
Her passion for environmental awareness and a sustainable
economy set her apart from her contemporaries. Indeed, her

poetic renderings of the changing landscape, often presented
as multimedia installations, bring us joy and hope. In this work,
the artist is well-versed in the needs of the local community and
the role she strives to play as an educator. With these aims in
mind, Sieh creates impactful works that seek to rescue a fastdisappearing
world.
In her own words, the artist notes, “The plants that start
my installations are all from my house; some are medicinal,
some edible, many are native to Florida. I often incorporate
repurposed materials, such as the silver bubble wrap from food
packaging. I try not to throw anything away. My work is so often
about environmental issues, and I think it is important for artists
to set an example in their own practices. We’ve been talking
about these issues for decades now. It’s not that the public is
unaware, so I think that artists should take the lead in such
global concerns.”
