1 very fun course that taught me a lot, not only about myself but the world around me and the processes people go through everyday
2 We did not use the books, though probably because the course needed to be changed after going online. The articles, videos, and lectures were very helpful.

This is silly and I know that, but the "no eating" during class rule was difficult because this class was taught during the lunch hour. I understand if that food is distracting or
someone has an allergy, but some negotiation on that rule would have been great.
Slack proved to be extremely useful for me to express my ideas. In class, I'm an introvert and speaking up gives me such bad anxiety. Having the screen as a buffer was so
helpful for me to thoughtfully formulate my ideas without anxiety.
I liked the supplemental material, but I also liked that we could be flexible with it, focus on the pieces we were more interested in or spend more time on something that
ended up being very interesting, even if it meant a few less reading materials for the next week.
6 Every assignment was very straightforward, and the class was very engaging with students.

1 the switch over to Twitch was effortless and effective for his style of teaching
2
Schoology- for assignments and updates
Twitch- for class livestreams
Slack- for interactive group discussion
3 Loved that it was a live stream and not a conference call. Thought that was much more helpful to keep me focused.
4 I think both YTLive and Twitch worked well
5 I liked the use of Slack for group work, and the live streams worked well.
6 Frequent communication via email and Schoology. A combination of synchronous class and asynchronous aspects (video-watching, assignments, etc) was especially helpful.

very passionate about the work he does in and out of the classroom! makes amazing connections of the topics to the real world and is overall very engaged in the class and
how each person is doing
Professor Pilarski put so much effort into making this class a success, despite the transition to remote learning. He is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about his
area of expertise and I always enjoy his classes immensely!
Professor Pilarski is extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about different forms of media and technology. He taught class in a fun, interactive way, encouraged student
feedback and discussion, and sincerely loves teaching.
Nick is an amazing professor! Such an intelligent man that brings his big ideas into the classroom. I have so many classes that are black and white, and don't focus on
issues that I find important like feminism, race, and other hot topic issues. Nick was able to successfully tie New Media into all of these topics, and taught me to think
bigger picture, more philosophical. Amazingly talented.
5 He was very enthusiastic to teach us and to help us learn and understand.

We watched great, stimulating videos in class. He presented very stimulating material in well constructed presentations. Our class discussions were well facilitated and the
course was very clear and well-structured.
The course material didn't feel like it played a super heavy roll in the class. You wouldn't need to read the articles to follow along with the professor but that is because he
does such a good job explaining the reading that you yourself feel like you read it. Nick is a very good presenter and brings up great questions that gets the class talking.
I liked how the class addressed relevant topics to the current situation and to the subject of the course. I think this type of subject needs to be related to real life to be
understood and the course did a good job of that for me.

We had live classes on Twitch on Monday. On Wednesday we chatted on slack. Fridays depended and changed based on what needed to be covered and on what platform
would be best to do so. He was consistent and that was much needed during these hard times. His wife, unfortunately, was going through some health problems in addition
to everything going on. I have never meet a teacher more dedicated to seeing his students succeed. His hard work and dedication are inspiring and admirable.
2 Twitch TV, Youtube Live, and Google Meets all worked extremely well. We also used Slack, which was a great and very organized platform to do group work on.
3
Nick is the BEST professor to have for virtual learning. Nick is the ONLY professor where I feel like not much changed from the transition from normal class to online class.
He was so good with communicating with us and he knew what he was doing with the online applications. He also didn't put more work on us during this time and stayed
flexible with his class. I can't say this about all the professors but Nick is a 10/10 professor that Carthage doesn't deserve. He really pours his heart into his teaching and
wants everyone to care about the subjects like he does.
4 Livestreaming lectures worked really well.

2
Nick felt like the only professor who was prepared for online learning. He knew what he was doing when it came to running the virtual applications. He is super
knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches and he is just such a great guy. He deserves a pay raise compared to the other professors who just muddied there way through
online learning. He cares so much about his students and would set aside a ton of time for us if we needed it. Great professor 10/10.
3 Nick Pilarski is one of the greatest professors I have ever had. He genuinely cares so much about each student's success, and he is so knowledgeable on the topics at hand.
4
His wife has cancer and he still managed to be incredibly detailed in his teaching. He knows tech and how to present better than anyone I have ever seen and his course
remained very stimulating. He responded to emails quickly, kept us prepared, and kept us close knit despite the distance. Give him a raise, in all seriousness. He knows what
he's doing.
5 He is extremely knowledgeable and organized. His communication skills are unmatched.

I think this was one of the best courses I've taken at Carthage. I was able to flex my creative muscle, but in a way where I felt like the work I was doing was something I could
use for the rest of my life. I want to go into screenwriting someday, so I think the skills that Professor Pilarski taught us were invaluable. He also talked about how we could
break out into the entertainment industry, if we were so inclined. I'm glad he gave us plenty examples of good screenplays, short films, and television shows; sometimes the
best learning takes place from reading/watching examples and emulating them. If I could give any critiques to the course, it's that we learned very little about formatting a
screenplay in this course. If I wanted to learn how to format things, I had to look it up online. I think my screenplay turned out alright in the end, but others still had problems
formatting things right up to the last week, which makes me feel they may not be able to use these things in their portfolios, if they ever wanted to.
I loved this class. I think I was really able to grow as a writer through this class and even thought it was a lot of work all the work felt worth doing. It was really challenging but
in a good way.
I enjoyed the screenplays we read and the movies/shows we watched for this class. It has opened up my eyes to different things I could watch on my free time but also how I
can analyze all of these works more in depth on a daily basis. It has helped me appreciate the art form a lot more than I already did.

Professor Pilarski did an incredible job with his remote teaching. We were all still able to have group "discussions" and feedback from our peers through the use of slack and
zoom. I thought he did an incredible job structuring this class so well last minute!
2 I liked livestreaming classes.
3 I enjoyed the difference in the platform used. Having class on Twitch made it feel more fun than the common Zoom meetings. It was a nice change of interface.
4
After using it in other classes, I think it would have been more effective to have used Zoom or some similar application for this class instead of Twitch. I say this because, on
Twitch, the student's comments are regulated to just messaging, which can make natural conversation and discussion difficult. Plus, I would have liked to hear my
classmates' voices, sappy as that sounds. I liked using Slack for assignment submissions and discussions outside of class though - I think it was easy enough to learn.

Professor Pilarski is a wonderful instructor. He was understanding and respectful to all of his students since the beginning of the semester. His ability to adapt to online
teaching was phenomenal. He did a fantastic job at molding the class to be better suited for remote learning. And his accommodations for struggling students during this
time is also praiseworthy. Overall I had a positive experience in his class and I was able to learn so many new skills that I did not know before. This was all thanks to his
clear passion for the industry and for teaching.
Professor Pilarski is obviously very enthusiastic about screenwriting; he really knows his stuff, to boot. I think he was a great professor, probably my favorite of the semester.
He was just so helpful. I would say that, for most of my classes, my professors never discuss how we can use the things we are learning to get a job, which -- you know --
should be the point of college. But Professor Pilarski actually took the time to be like, "here's how you can break out into the industry, here's steps you can take after this
course to better your chances, etc." I think, without that, I would've been like, "I'm happy to have these skills, but I still have no idea how I can use them to pursue a career in
entertainment, so I won't try."
Professor Pilarski has been one of my favorite professors at Carthage. He helped to open my eyes to an entirely other field and I am so glad to have taken his class. He really
helped me improve my creative writing ability and I cannot thank him enough. I am taking two more classes with him next semester. One of the coolest people, best teacher,
and mentor you will ever have. He will help you realize the amount you have available to you in your life.
4 He's a great professor and you can tell he really cares about his students.

Please comment on the instructor. Pilarski is debatably the most innovative professor here at Carthage College

This course is clearly a writing intensive class, but the way the course is
structured, it's not overwhelming. The tests were over reading content. Inclass
group activities were really fun and good ways to start discussion
between students while giving them the ability to actively apply concepts
learned in class. Technology is very important in this course, as almost all
the work is done in a computer program called Scrivener. I have a very
unreliable computer, so I kind of wish we had access to Scrivener in one of
the computer labs. Overall, a very fun class. You feel great when you look at
the content you created over the course of the semester.

At the beginning of the semester, this course had an insane amount of
reading. Pilarski listened to the feedback of the students and limited the
excess of readings, which really helped the students be more involved
during class discussions. The nal project for this course was really
transformative, and I think it will leave a lasting impression on the class and
how we interact with technology moving forward. I feel like I learned a ton in
this class. The lectures were really interesting and the group discussions
were always a delight. The content covered in this course was awesome.
Very interesting course. challeneged my thought more than most class

articles that were related to the course topic as well as skipping over the
articles that did not seem relevant or would have been too hard to work
through as a class in just an hour of discussion. Being a discussion based
course there was always a great amount of broad questions that worked very
well in order to get the class to talk about all of the di erent opinions.
The instructor was great. At rst, I wasn't too sure about him, but I came to
really enjoy his class and him as a person.
I believe the content in the course was great. The book presented up-to-date
articles that are all separate subjects, but tie in perfectly into the bigger
picture problems with communication in our society.
I think Professor Pilarski is one of a kind professor. He's a kind of professor
you want to do well for. He is super helpful and is always willing to explain
material more clearly and help outside of class. There isn't one complaint
that I have about Professor Pilarski and hope to have another class with him
in the future.
I think the instructor did a great job using his knowledge to explain the
complicated readings to the class which made it possible to discuss these
readings. He also did a great job of giving quick feedback on our writings to
make sure that we knew exactly what we needed to do in order to improve
our writing to better our grades.
Love Dr. Pilarski! Can't wait to take more classes with him!!!
This class was very helpful to think outside the box. It was some challenging
material but nothing out of the ordinary. It was all relevant too. It was really
worth taking this course and I would for sure recommend this class to peers.
Most classes, we just went over readings from the night before, and that's
great, but I still am not 100% sure what the subject fully is. It was a very

entertaining class with a very knowledgable professor, but there wasn't really
any incentive to go to class, which makes it even harder to go to an 8am.
Professor Pilarski was by far one of the top 3 professors/ educators I have
ever had in my life. On the outside, he really ran our sessions as a discussion
based experience where there really was no right answers or lectures. This
really encouraged us as students to voice our own opinions which actually
caused us to see every side of situations and even a deeper meaning on each
subject at hand. Even when a student made a claim that was not on topic or
even if they did not explain it clearly, Immediately after they were nished
Professor Pilarski agreed with their point and expanded on that perspective.
That really made me as a student want to participate more in class, and
showed how informed and open minded he was in every subject he was
teaching. I never really have had a professor, beside Professor Pilarski and
Professor Greg Barron, that has taken classes to this level before. I really
believe more professors need to teach like and this is the direction education
needs to move into in the future.

Very well prepared and enthusiastic about "every" class. I cannot emphasis
that enough. someone who loves their work like he does and who gives
useful feedback is a wonderful teacher.
I thoroughly enjoyed the lms we watched, as well as the material we got to

interact with as well. I would take this class again.
Pilarski is a great teacher and I have no doubt he will do great things for this
school in the media area. I am excited to make him my advisor.
I believe, Professor Pilarski's course was by far the most eye opening and
knowledgeable course I've ever taken at Carthage, and this semester he was
pretty much the only professor who explained material clearly. Even the
homework was clear to understand. we need more professors like him as
well as a larger lm department.
Great
He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches.
Great. Loved how engaging he was and the enthusiasm day in and day out
was appreciated
I truly enjoyed this class, and learning about all di erent kinds of mediums of
screen aesthetics. The professor was incredibly passionate and it helped us
learn and become passionate as well.

Prof. Pilarski is very knowledgeable and passionate about the class and
about lm in general! Loved having him this semester and look forward to
further interaction with him around campus and in the CDM department!
Nick is a great professor. Although he leaves something to be desired
organizationally, his passion and interest for the subject of lmmaking was
ever-present in the course. He clearly made himself available to all four of
the students in the class, and I'm sure we'll be in contact with each other for
years to come.
The course was very interesting. The material was good, and our semester
goals were set for us on the rst day. I learned a lot and have improved.
