Welcome to the January 2021 edition of The 

Eckington and Killamarsh Doorsteppa. 

Well I think I speak for most of us when I say we’re 

happy to see the end of 2020! What a strange year it 

has been. Everyone at The Doorsteppa would like to 

wish you all a very happy New Year and let’s keep 

everything crossed that it’s a much better one. 

With a lot of us spending more time in the house it’s 

worth checking out our Books Section where there 

are reviews of two best sellers. They are both available 

to download so if you fancy the look of one of 

them, you can start reading without leaving your 

home. See page 41 for more. 

Many people receive notebooks and diaries for 

Christmas. I’ve had a few over the years, but most of 

us (including me) never use them. However, 

particularly during this strange time, it might be 

interesting to start. What would someone reading it 

in the future think of it all?! Check out our Monthly 

Focus on page 29 for more info and also some 

nutritional facts about nuts! 

In our Gardening Section this month we have some 

tips on creating the perfect Winter Garden. While we 

usually withdraw into the warmth, it might be worth 

putting the time into your outdoor space this winter. 

All the details can be found on page 17.

CONSERVATION GROUP 

Don't bin your empty crisp packets! 

7 LOCAL CHRONICLE 

Guest of St Giles Parish Church. The bench will 

stand proudly for many years to come for future 

generations to pause and reflect ‘In Remembrance 

2020 – Faced with Courage.’ 

You may not be aware that crisp packets are not 

recyclable through the local authority kerbside 

collections and most end up in landfill where they 

take up to 80 years to decompose. 

There is however a commercial recycling scheme 

by TerraCycle UK Ltd that turns this waste into 

recycled products. Killamarsh Conservation Group 

sought and was given permission by the Bridge 

Street Co-op to place a public collection box for 

crisp packets in-store and also arranged for a 

similar box at Killamarsh Infant and Nursery School 

for their pupils and parents to use. 

The Group approached St Giles School, and they 

too have a box for their children to bring empty 

packets to be recycled via the school. We are also 

very pleased that Eckington School has joined the 

campaign to reduce the number of empty crisp 

packets that so often end up as litter on the streets 

and in hedgerows. Our thanks to the Manager at 

Killamarsh Co-op, and the respective Head 

Teachers of the schools for taking part. Only empty 

crisp packets (no other snack wrappers) are 

recycled through this scheme, but both individual 

and multipack wrappers are accepted.

INTRODUCING ………………. 

Ian Judson, who has lived in the village for several 

years and Barry Thompson, a live long resident, 

together opened Art and Minds at 43 Bridge Street 

in 2017. Their main function is to encourage 

members of the community (especially those with 

mental health/social problems and loneliness to 

use the shop for a chat, a cuppa, to listen to music, 

read or participate in art and craft if they wish. 

They also have for sale in the shop many gifts and 

goodies so call in and I am sure you will find 

something you like. They are a not-for-profit 

organisation with any money raised from sales 

being used to pay the rent and energy bills.

MEMORIAL BENCH INSTALLED 

On Saturday the 19th of December Barry Pritchard 

Funeral Directors placed a memorial bench in front 

of their premises in Bridge Street in Killamarsh to 

remember those who lost their lives in 2020. The 

bench was unveiled by Lee Rowley, MP for North 

East Derbyshire and was dedicated by Rev. Helen 

Edited by Patricia Bone

Feeling a bit jaded? It’s really not that bad, honest! There are

17 GARDENING 

If I say ‘winter garden’ what do you imagine? A 

stately home? Evergreen shrubs? Topiary 

maybe? 

It dawned on me a few years ago when I was 

out walking the dog on a frosty morning that 

winter gardens are really all about the light. 

From late autumn through the winter there is a 

pink-gold low slanting light in the morning and 

afternoon which makes frost and raindrops 

sparkle, casts interesting shadows and makes 

everything look magical. 

Watch your garden throughout the day from 

the rooms you where you see it best. Watch 

where and when the sunlight falls and plan 

accordingly. 

Grasses look beautiful when they are covered in 

frost and backlit. The red or yellow winter 

stems of Cornus (or dogwood) however seem to 

glow when winter sunshine illuminates them 

directly. 

Most suburban houses have smaller gardens, 

easily visible from the house so it’s important to 

choose plants which look good in more than 

one season. 

As well as shrubs with good stem colour, look 

for smaller trees with pretty bark. There are 

plenty of small Japanese Maples which can be 

grown in tubs. If you have a little more space a 

silver birch can look stunning, or even my 

favourite, the paper-bark maple, Acer griseum, 

which is a slow-growing small tree, pretty all 

year round with crimson leaves in the autumn 

then a characteristic chestnut bark which peels 

naturally to reveal bright orange red bark 

underneath. 

Look for plants with architectural shapes such 

as one of the sculptural eryngiums (sea holly), 

salvias or sedums. All look beautiful in the 

summer and autumn but gain a second lease of 

life when covered with frosted cobwebs. 

Plants like these will make you want to get out 

in your garden even in winter, so add a little 

scent with a winter jasmine or a sarcococca 

confusa (Christmas box) which has tiny white 

highly scented flowers. These late flowering 

plants provide a source of nectar for early 

pollinators. 

I no longer tidy my flower beds. I leave piles of 

fallen leaves and debris in beds to provide 

shelter for wildlife. The leaves to rot down in 

the end which is good for the soil too. But I do 

spend time neatening the edge of the lawn and 

sharpening the edges of my borders. It’s 

amazing how much smarter my garden looks 

with minimal effort.

21 COMMUNITY 

In late 2018 a handful of enthusiastic community minded residents 

met up for cuppa and cake to look at what we could do to help our 

community. We were all involved with various little groups but felt 

that both we, and the wider community, didn’t really appreciate the 

number of groups there are throughout Killamarsh. 

Our thoughts on this were to become an umbrella organisation to 

have a website with online diary of events and regular meetings of 

all groups to make it easier for residents to get a feel for what 

happens and, hopefully, join some of the groups, or at least attend 

events. 

After visits to ETT - Eckington Town Team we broadened our vision 

to encompass general things that may help the Community 

Youth Project - Some of our founding members joined with the 2 

ladies operating Youth Services, other community minded residents, 

Councillors from County, District and Parish as well as officers from 

County to hold meetings to, hopefully, find a way forward to bring 

back Youth Services. 

Covid19 brought obstacles and delays to this work but, at the end of 

October 2020, we had notification from County that discussions 

could begin to move forward, which they have, and by the time this 

announcement appears in the January issue of Doorsteppa in 

January we hope most things have fallen into place and we can start 

preparations to resume Youth Services if the pandemic allows. 

Once the Youth Project is running smoothly our aim is to then 

expand use of the building/facilities for use by other groups & 

residents when not scheduled for youth provision – such as Internet 

Café, Drop-In Centre, socials and most things that come along that 

we can help with, and raise money as well to ensure the services & 

activities can continue for the foreseeable future. 

As this is totally Community oriented, we welcome as much support 

from volunteers as possible to join us in running Youth Services 

and/or other services we may be able to offer – one lady has offered 

to use her skills helping others to learn use of computers and 

packages [thanks Carol], and volunteers who can help in other ways 

generally, or with any particular skills they have and, so important, 

ideas and thoughts on events and activities that the community may 

benefit from. 

Big tasks ahead (depending on condition of the building) decorating, 

repair, refurbishment of kitchen to current requirement and much 

more, enhance web site and much more.

The “Freedom Programme” was rolled out on 3rd 

September 2020 at New Hope Community Church, 

Halfway. 

The programme is a rolling 12 week domestic 

violence course aimed at empowering women 

who are experiencing or have experienced 

domestic abuse. 

The course is presently being run at New Hope 

Community Church, Halfway, Sheffield and 

provides information that will help women to 

understand abuse. Key elements of the 12 week 

programme include the following. 

• Helping to recognise the beliefs held by 

abusive men. 

• Assist you to meet other women with similar 

life experiences. 

• Illustrate the effects of domestic violence 

on children. 

• Help build confidence and self-esteem. 

• Help recognise future abusers and move 

on to abuse free lives. 

During the Covid-19 Pandemic and the subsequent 

lockdowns, statistics have shown that there has 

been a sharp rise in reported incidents of domestic 

violence. Domestic abuse organisations have observed 

increased household tension and domestic 

violence due to forced coexistence, economic 

stress and fears about the virus. Increased isolation 

could create an escalation in abuse, where those 

who are living with an abusive partner or family 

member, may be less likely to ask for help. 

The programme runs every Thursday 10am – 12pm 

& 1pm – 3pm. We have 2 fully certified trained 

facilitators to put you at ease in a safe and 

confidential environment.

Could you be the next Samuel Pepys? 

On January 1st, 1660 Samuel Pepys began to write 

his diary. He had no idea that it would become one 

of the most important documents for historians 

studying the English Restoration period, which 

coincidentally also began in 1660. 

Pepys’ diaries are special because he recorded 

every day mundane events. He was also socially 

well connected because his cousin, Edward 

Montagu, was a high-ranking naval officer who 

found a position for Pepys at the Navy Office in the 

City of London. Pepys was talented and worked 

hard so was promoted quickly, being invited to 

important events, all of which he recorded in his 

meticulous shorthand. 

For example, Pepys was aboard one of the ships 

which sailed to Holland to bring Charles II back to 

England and he attended the coronation. He 

recorded everything in his diary, giving vivid 

accounts of the Great Plague and the Great Fire of 

London. Through his entries we are also able to 

relive the theatre of the period, as well as fashion 

and popular food and drink. His diary has been of 

invaluable assistance to historians and has given 

much pleasure to its many readers.

No longer feared as the enemy of weight loss, these 

little nutritional powerhouses have come into their 

own. Here are four reasons to go a little bit nuts this 

year. 

Health - Eating nuts boosts health. They are 

particularly beneficial to heart health, lowering the 

risk of cardiovascular disease. A review of 25 

scientific led scientists to conclude that eating 70g 

of nuts per day resulted in lower total cholesterol 

and lower LDL (bad) cholesterol. 

Stay slim - One Spanish study of almost 9000 adults, 

showed that those who ate nuts at least twice a 

week had a much lower risk of gaining weight over 

the next few years compared to those who rarely or 

never ate them. Another study found that despite 

having the same calorie-intake, adults who included 

84g of almonds into their daily diet in place of some 

of the carbs, had around a 60% greater reduction in 

weight and body fat after 6 months compared to 

those who did not eat them. 

Muscles – Nuts contain the right combinations of 

protein and essential fatty acids, to protect 

muscle tissue, repair damaged cells and reduce 

inflammation. 

Portability - If you’re looking for the easiest healthy 

snack to stash in your handbag or office drawer, 

nuts are your friend. They provide an instant 

energy-boost to beat the mid-afternoon slump, and 

don’t cause a sudden spike in blood sugar like 

chocolate-based snacks. 

Keep portions to around 30g per day and stick to 

raw unsalted varieties. 

But now is definitely the time to go nuts!

37 HISTORY 

I have recently come across an article in The Voice 

newspaper from September 1976 which was 

written by its Editor the late Dave Froggatt. Dave 

was renowned in the village for many, many years 

for his humourous takes on village issues both in 

prose and poetry. ‘Killamarsh Council’ were often 

his target. 

This article was written during the water shortage 

of 1976 during the heatwave that summer with his 

usual humour and wit. 

HOW YOU CAN HELP SAVE WATER NOW 

Following the official recognition of the state of the 

drought, an emergency meeting of Killamarsh 

Council was called to discuss the situation and adopt 

suitable measures. 

By an almost unanimous vote it was agreed that the 

Common Market could not be held responsible, but 

reservations were made regarding the deleterious 

effect of decimalization, coupled with the constant 

floating of the pound. 

To offset the high cost of water rationing (cost of 

standpipes, water carts etc.) it was decided to effect 

distribution of the ration once a week in the form of 

blocks of ice. These could be stored by the 

consumer and thawed out as necessary. It was 

pointed out that there were residents without a 

refrigerator and these were advised to stack 

the blocks of ice in the bath (first removing the coal) 

and allow the cold tap to maintain a steady drip 

on to the ice. 

Encouragement is to be given to the formation of 

communal bath parties, reminiscent of the war-time 

street efforts. Holes would be dug at strategic 

points, lined with polythene, and the entire 

population of the larger streets could bathe together 

once a fortnight. Smaller streets would have to 

make do with a more intimate, but none-the-less 

effective, communal rub-down with wet flannels. 

N.C.B. Westthorpe report a profit so far this year, 

mainly due to the sale of surplus (once used) bath 

water, much in demand for car radiators due to its 

self-sealing qualities. This is likely to cease on the 

temporary closing of the baths with the adoption of 

the car-wash scheme whereby miners are taken by 

bus to the automatic car wash. Batches of up to 20 

miners can nip through revolving brushes in the time 

taken to clean one car, averaging out at a water 

consumption of one cupful per miner. Surface 

workers are expected to ablute at a commensurately 

quicker rate to maintain output and productivity. 

For the duration of the drought, it was resolved that 

the library shall issue books only by authors in the 

A-G and P-Z sections. The closure of the H-O section 

should result in immediate water saving.

A bus at 

the Pond 

The Woodall Pond Management Committee are to 

be congratulated. Their various methods of water 

conservation, involving anglers being required to 

squeeze each fish landed (saving 20 per cent) 

employing bird-scarers to stop them drinking (saving 

20 per cent) and anti-evaporation polythene covers 

(saving 75 per cent), are all working well. 

As these measures result in a total saving of 115 

per cent, they are now stockpiling water. It is an 

impressive sight to see accumulated water heaped 

above the banks. The local bus company is running 

excursions to the pond and it proving quite a tourist 

attraction. 

Despite some success in village efforts to conserve 

water, it was finally decided that a concerted civic 

effort should be made to pray for rain. As the Clerk 

to the Council has some connections in this field, it 

was left to him to contact the necessary authority.

Retirement is meant to be relaxing, isn’t it? You 

do what you love doing and enjoy yourself. But 

what if you suddenly receive a letter out of the 

blue? A woman who worked in your office many 

years ago has cancer and is dying. She just wants 

you to know. This touches you for reasons you 

can’t quite explain, so you write her a note to say 

that you are sorry to hear that. Putting on your 

coat and your yacht shoes you leave with the 

note. Your destination? The post box. Just as far 

as the end of the road. 

And so, starts Harold Fry’s extraordinary journey: 

627 miles in 87 days. With no plan, other than to 

reach Queenie, he sets off on a journey of faith. 

Scribbling on the note he tells her to wait for 

him. This debut novel from radio and TV writer, 

Rachel Joyce, will take you on a gentle journey 

with Harold and the various people he meets 

along the way. Totally unprepared for what he 

will encounter, his faith in positive thinking 

keeps him going as he learns more about his life 

and relationships with his wife and son. 

Post-apocalyptic and dystopian literature is 

perennially popular with teens and adults alike, 

and the events of 2020 only served to increase 

its attraction. The Maze Runner was initially 

published in 2009 but came to prominence with 

the release of the film adaptation in 2014. 

Thomas is a teenager who awakes to find himself 

in a box in a place called the Glade. He has no 

memory of who he is or how he came to be here, 

but he is thrown into this new community, and 

as a reader so are you. Before long you become 

familiar with the terminology used by the boys and 

you feel as if you are a Glader along with them. 

As Thomas adjusts to his new environment, he 

learns about the Maze which surrounds the 

Glade. Each day the walls open and a select 

group of runners spend daylight hours exploring 

and mapping it. It is a race against the clock 

because at sunset the Grievers – giant robotic 

creatures – enter the Maze and they are deadly. 

The walls close to protect the community and 

overnight the structure of the Maze changers, 

leaving the runners to start again in the morning. 

The big mystery is why. Why are Thomas and the 

other boys there and why do the Grievers come 

out to get them? Why do the walls in the Maze 

change and will the runners ever solve it? 

However, more importantly why has a girl been 

sent to the Glade and why has all communication 

with the outside world suddenly stopped? 

This is the first book in an engaging series which 

develop the story and characters beyond the 

original theme.
