PAGE 4 - MADISON MESSENGER - January 17, 2021 SIMS, Robert Lewis “Bob”, age 95, formerly of London, OH and Tucson, AZ, passed away Monday, January 4, 2021 at Hospice of Miami County in Troy, OH. Bob was born October 27, 1925 in Marion, OH, son of the late Raymond L. & Sara J. (Curtis) Sims. He was a proud U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, receiving two Purple Hearts during the Battle of the Bulge. He was honored to be a part of the Honor Flight to Washington in 2013. On May 15, 1948, Bob married the love of his life, Wanda (Lawles), and they were blessed to share 72 wonderful years of marriage. Bob is survived by his wife Wanda; daughter Robyn (Duane) Wolf of Vandalia, OH; daughter Janet (Greg) Lee of Westerville, OH; and granddaughter Grace Wolf of Newport News, VA. While living in London, Bob and Wanda owned and operated Sims Florist for 33 years. He had a true passion for creating beautiful flower arrangements and taught many others the art of arranging. Bob’s passion for floral design earned him multiple awards. Following their retirement, Bob and Wanda moved to Arizona, which became their second home. Bob enjoyed playing golf and was proud of his hole in one. He enjoyed traveling, hiking, playing ping-pong and cards, attending potlucks and the Arizona heat. He valued his church relationships and the church families he met everywhere he lived. Arrangements have been entrusted to Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, Vandalia, Ohio, where a private family service will be held. Interment will be at Concord Cemetery, Grove City, Ohio. In Memory of Beverly Feb 6, 1939 – Jan 21, 2011 She was just a teen aged girl from Missouri who fell in love with a G.I. Stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood. She had quit school during her sophomore year to go to work to help support her widowed mother and 10 siblings. She was a little short girl just a little over 100 lbs, but she could pack a wallop. After just knowing him for 6 weeks, her sweetheart was discharged from the army and went 2000 miles away to seek his fortune. Little did he realize that his fortune was still sitting in Missouri. After almost a year he saw the light, just like the prodigal son. Over the phone he proposed to her and she said yes. A wedding was scheduled in Ohio after a Sunday morning church service, but alas he didn't realize that the license that he got in Missouri was only good in Missouri. On 9/11/58 they were married in a parsonage in Missouri and on 9/14 were “married” again in West Jefferson, Ohio. She came as just a little girl from Missouri but Oh what she became. She only had 10 years of school, but she had the smarts and common sense to do most anything. Shortly after the wedding she told her husband, “Don't you ever hit me, you have to go to sleep sometime and I have an iron skillet.” She was a worker. It was a one day honeymoon and then back to work. Two years later she presented her husband with a beautiful daughter, three years later another one. She quit work until the children were in school, and then she was always home for them. She raised the children as her husband was always involved in something that took his time, and she did a great job. When her oldest daughter became pregnant, she said I hope it's a girl, I could never love a little boy. On February 22, 1995 Jake was born, she changed over night, they were inseparable from birth to the time of her death 15 years later. She was tight with her money, a garage saler and trash picker, and knew her antiques. She saved her family a lot of money and acquired a number of valuable antiques. She was opinionated, and spoke her mind. You either liked her or didn't. You always knew where you stood with her. If she liked you she'd give you the shirt off of her back, she was always for the under privileged and down trodden. Her outspokenness must not have affected too many people her funeral was one of the largest seen in years. She was a great organizer, she organized and would feed over 100 people at her church dinners. She was known as “The flower Lady of West Jefferson.” For years she planted and maintained flowers along Main Street. She and her husband purchased a 155 year old house that was falling down, and she made a show place of it with her flowers. In 2003 she was found with breast cancer, it never slowed her down. After a mastectomy and chemo it looked like it was licked. Then in 2005 it returned, more chemo and radiation. Some thought that the radiation would slow her down, but it seemed to energizer her and she would come back and work all day in the flowers. At the James Cancer Hospital she got the nick name of the Energizer Bunny. In 2008 the cancer had gone to her lungs. She was a fighter, where ever she was she inspired people, and influenced a lot of people by her faith. She gave hope to people who were fighting the same battle. Her quote was “I've had a good life, I know where I'm going and I'm ready to go.” On January 21, 2011 she got her reward. obituaries KNIGHT THOMAS Nona J. Knight Thomas passed away on Dec. 7, 2020, at the OSU Wexner Medical Center after a lengthy battle with heart, lung and kidney disease. She was born on Dec. 3, 1935, to Lester and Allura May Rigdon, in Caledonia, Ohio. Nona was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, six sisters, and her husband, Larry Thomas. Nona is survived by: daughters, Suzette (Jimmie) Moran and Marcia Finney, both of London; grandchildren, Dan (Amanda) Moran, Heather (Dave) Shingler, Amanda (Jason) Adelsberger, Rich (Hannah) Bivens; great-grandchildren, Evan and Tristan Moran, Finley and Hadley Shingler, Ana Adelsberger, and Adrianna, Maxximus and Maggie Bivens; extended family, Steve (Tonya) Thomas, Tammy (John) Call, Scott (Carrie) Thomas, Shawn (Courtney) Thomas, and a host of Thomas grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nona adored each of her family members. Nona was formerly employed by Creamer Sheet Metal, Otis Elevator, The Madison Press, London Florist, Stan Dritz Law Firm, and Snappy Mart. She taught herself the art of calligraphy, loved making greeting cards and was very proud of memorizing all the books of the bible, the states, and their capitals. A special thanks to the staff at Fresenius Dialysis Center in London and the staff at the OSU Wexner Medical Center. Memorials may be made in Nona’s memory to the Madison County Humane Society or by giving blood to the Red Cross. She was born on June 14, 1921, in Madison County, Ohio, the daughter of Charles R. and Delphine (Holland) Morcher. June is survived by: her daughter, Judith Lippott of Columbus; granddaughter, Jerri Smith-Bush of Springfield; great-grandchildren, Stacie and Aaron Bush of Springfield; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Robert Kilgore, 1984; daughter, Jerrie Kilgore, 1965; and brother, Bill Morcher. According to Mrs. Kilgore’s wishes, there was no funeral service. HACKWORTH Earl Hackworth Jr., 84, of Columbus died on Dec. 19, 2020, at Darby Glenn Nursing and Rehabilitation, Hilliard. Earl was born on Aug. 21, 1936, in Ironton, Ohio, the son of Earl and Evelyn (Craft) Hackworth Sr. He had been a member of Broadman Baptist Carolyn (Slone) Sapp, age 77, went home in the arms of Jesus on January 11, 2021 unexpectedly at her home. Preceded in death by parents, Robert and Willa Slone; husband, Roger Sapp; son, Richard (Ritchie) Sapp and brother, Doug Slone. Survived by brother, Bobbie Slone; sister, Delores (Dee) Storts; several nieces and nephews and friends, along with special friends who she worked with at the Columbus Messenger, Phil - Publisher, Kathy, Paulette, Andrea, Rick, Doug, Greg, Theresa, Ashlee, Chuck and Mike (Madison Messenger) Grant, Becky, Kristy and Jim Durban for 34 years. PERSINGER Florence (Warfel) Persinger, 79, received her angel wings on Dec. 26, 2020, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease, surrounded by family at her home. She was born in Plumwood, Ohio, on June 22, 1941. Florence was a retired school bus driver for Jonathan Alder School District. She was active with her bus colleagues in many social and fundraising activities. She was a member of Mechanicsburg Christian Fellowship Church and was their first piano player when meeting in a house. Florence shared her musical talent, playing for many church services, children’s’ musicals, weddings and singing with family around the piano. She was the best mom and grandma ever, hauling kids to ball games, swim lessons and Sunday School. She was a dedicated farmer’s wife, doing chores, driving tractors, and always making homecooked meals. She loved all animals but especially her cats. Florence was preceded in death by: her parents, Roger and Loa (Grewell) Warfel; only sister and husband, Janet and Paul Brown; and grandson, Brock Eichenauer. She is survived by: her husband and childhood sweetheart, Robert Persinger, having celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this summer; four children, Connie (Kent) Eichenauer, Daniel Persinger, Barbie (Bryan) Reed and David Persinger; seven grandchildren, Daniel Persinger, Chrissy (Blake) Moe, Brian (Laura) Ayres, Cheri Persinger, Kile (Ashley) Eichenauer, Jared (Alyssa) Ayres and Becky Ayres; nine greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Johnnie was born on June 27, 1953, in Williamson, W.Va., a son of Frank T. and Kathleen (Blackburn) Scarberry. He is survived by: his children, Jonathan (Melissa) Scarberry of Columbus, and Brandy Scarberry of Galloway; siblings, Brenda Gibney and David Scarberry, both of London, Pam (Greg) Fitchpatrick of Springfield, Judy (Kevin Jarrell) Stevens of London, Roger (Missy) Scarberry of North Carolina, and Richard (Kelly Fox) Scarberry of Columbus; grandchildren, Elijah, Peyton, Hunter, Kaden, Chace and Avannah; numerous nieces and nephews. LONG Lois A. Long, 87, of Williamsport, Ohio, passed away on Jan. 5, 2021, in Circleville, Ohio. HOLLOWAY Edward Jay Holloway, 69, of London died on Jan. 6, 2021, at Doctors Hospital West, Columbus. Ed was born on Sept. 28, 1951, in Mansfield, Ohio, a son of Herbert C. and Ruth (Jackson) Holloway. Ed loved to fish in all manners. He was an electrician for 45 years. He adored his grandkids. He coached his daughter in softball and was involved with his son’s baseball. He was a loving and caring husband. HAMMONS William “Billy” Eugene Hammons, 83, of London died on Jan. 8, 2021, in his residence. Billy was born on Feb. 9, 1937, in London, Ohio, the son of Henry and Bertha (Riffit) Hammons. Billy was an outstanding pool player and loved to fish, go to the horse races at Scioto Downs, and scratch-off’ lottery tickets. He visited his daughter every day and loved his Cincinnati Bengals. She was born on November 13, 1931 to the late Dwight Myers and Nellie Myers Wilson in Ross county, Ohio. She was a longtime resident of West Jefferson and a member of the Baptist Church. She was loved by everyone who knew her. Her love for her family and her furbabies was immense. She is preceded in death by her only sibling, John Myers, her only son, Ricky (Skip) Pollard, husband of 32 years, Jack N. Pollard and her parents. She is survived by daughters, Jackie (Jack) Cain, Kim (Joe) Marcum, Tammy (Gerry) Hicks and Angela McCall, her loving furbaby Molly, 15 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
