Prescott Repeats In Montana-Dakota Meet<br />

Phil Prescott <strong>of</strong> Poplar, Montana became <strong>the</strong> first player in <strong>the</strong> hi<strong>story</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Montana-Dakota Horseshoe Tournament to successfully defend his<br />

title. He also became <strong>the</strong> first player to win this Tournament twice. Phil won<br />

7 games and lost 1. His only loss came at <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> Don Lawrence <strong>of</strong><br />

Wibaux, when Don pulled <strong>the</strong> upset <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tournament by defeating Phil 53<br />

to 47. Phil was trailing Don by a score <strong>of</strong> 46 to 14, but managed to come<br />

back and tie <strong>the</strong> score at 47 to 47 before Don finally defeated him. At <strong>the</strong><br />

end <strong>of</strong> regular round robin play, Ira O. Jensen <strong>of</strong> McCabe, Montana and Prescott<br />

were tied with 6 wins and 1 loss each. In <strong>the</strong> play<strong>of</strong>f game for <strong>the</strong><br />

championship, <strong>the</strong> lead changed hands several times before Phil finally defeated<br />

Ira in a very tough game by a score <strong>of</strong> 52 to 39, a game that went to<br />

90 shoes. Phil had 58 ringers, 18 double ringers for a ringer percentage <strong>of</strong><br />

64.4%. Ira pitched 54 ringers, 14 double ringers for a ringer percentage <strong>of</strong><br />

60.0%. Phil and Ira each broke <strong>the</strong> Tournament record for <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong><br />

ringers pitched by a winner and a loser in a single game.<br />

Warren Hedman <strong>of</strong> Gascoyne, North Dakota took <strong>the</strong> Class "B" Championship<br />

with 7 wins and no losses. He pitched 50.8% ringers. Herbert Sand<br />

<strong>of</strong> Glasgow, Montana took second place with 5 wins and 2 losses. He pitched<br />

41.5% ringers. Herb was <strong>the</strong> youngest player entered in <strong>the</strong> Tournament.<br />

Class "C" ended in a tie for <strong>the</strong> championship between Thomas P. Lund<br />

<strong>of</strong> Fort Peck, Montana and Donald Bohnet <strong>of</strong> Hebron, North Dakota, with<br />

each player having 6 wins and 1 loss. Lund defeated Bohnet in <strong>the</strong> play<strong>of</strong>f<br />

game by a score <strong>of</strong> 50 to 46. Lund pitched 30.8% ringers for <strong>the</strong> Tournament<br />

and Bohnet had 35.6% ringers.<br />
