Prescott Repeats In Montana-Dakota Meet
Phil Prescott of Poplar, Montana became the first player in the history
of the Montana-Dakota Horseshoe Tournament to successfully defend his
title. He also became the first player to win this Tournament twice. Phil won
7 games and lost 1. His only loss came at the hands of Don Lawrence of
Wibaux, when Don pulled the upset of the Tournament by defeating Phil 53
to 47. Phil was trailing Don by a score of 46 to 14, but managed to come
back and tie the score at 47 to 47 before Don finally defeated him. At the
end of regular round robin play, Ira O. Jensen of McCabe, Montana and Prescott
were tied with 6 wins and 1 loss each. In the playoff game for the
championship, the lead changed hands several times before Phil finally defeated
Ira in a very tough game by a score of 52 to 39, a game that went to
90 shoes. Phil had 58 ringers, 18 double ringers for a ringer percentage of
64.4%. Ira pitched 54 ringers, 14 double ringers for a ringer percentage of
60.0%. Phil and Ira each broke the Tournament record for the number of
ringers pitched by a winner and a loser in a single game.
Warren Hedman of Gascoyne, North Dakota took the Class "B" Championship
with 7 wins and no losses. He pitched 50.8% ringers. Herbert Sand
of Glasgow, Montana took second place with 5 wins and 2 losses. He pitched
41.5% ringers. Herb was the youngest player entered in the Tournament.
Class "C" ended in a tie for the championship between Thomas P. Lund
of Fort Peck, Montana and Donald Bohnet of Hebron, North Dakota, with
each player having 6 wins and 1 loss. Lund defeated Bohnet in the playoff
game by a score of 50 to 46. Lund pitched 30.8% ringers for the Tournament
and Bohnet had 35.6% ringers.
